About Philippa Mannino
Hello, I am Philippa Mannino. My husband, Gaetano, is Italian, I am English. We met in Rome when Gaetano was in his last year of university and I was working for the UN. Since we married, we have moved continually between Italy and the US. We now live in Connecticut. We have friends and family spread throughout Italy, and chose Tuscany for its magical countryside and central location. Although we know the area very well, we are constantly making new discoveries that we are happy to share with our guests.
Philippa Mannino purchased this Apartment in 2007
Why Philippa Mannino chose Cetona
Over the years we came to know Tuscany well and found that it was an excellent meeting point for friends we had made in various parts of Italy and Europe. Besides, who can turn down an invitation to stay in Tuscany! We used to stay in the glorious countryside of the Val d'Orcia area of Tuscany, but Cetona is much more convenient being a 15 minute drive from the Rome-Florence highway. The countryside is beautiful and Cetona is never swamped with tourists the way many other Tuscan towns are. Another convenience is the excellent rail service from Chiusi (10 minutes away) to just about anywhere in Italy.
What makes this Apartment unique
We fell in love with the wide sweep of Piazza Garibaldi and revel in being at the centre of an ever changing canvas of activity. Our windows onto the piazza are the best seats in the house. So much goes on in our piazza: festivals, dinners, religious events. It is such a treat not to have to get in the car to go to the grocery store; everything is on our doorstep. The weekly market on Saturday mornings provide an occasion to buy everything from the freshest produce to the latest fashions.

Relaxing in cetona
The property exceeded all of our expectations. There are numerous wonderful restaurants right in the main piazza. Wonderful hilltop towns are just a short drive away. Stay longer than a week or plan a return visit.
Thank you for your super review. Yes, having such great restaurants a stone's throw away is a big plus. Hope you'll return one day to do more exploring.
Gorgeous Home right on the square in beautiful Cetona
This is one of the few properties where seeing it in person was even better than the pictures online. Every room was just gorgeous and spacious - our party of 7 had plenty of room to spread out. The kitchen was well equipped and so clean - and Philippa stocked it for us with some drinks, which was a wonderful surprise. I also loved having a dryer to go along with the washing machine!
I wish I could give location and neighborhood higher than 5 stars. Cetona is just a gem within Tuscany - a small village where you can really soak in the Italian lifestyle among locals. Being right on the square was absolutely amazing. We would start our morning at the bakery downstairs, and start our evening at the wine store downstairs, which serves lovely free appetizers with your wine. Sitting outside on the tables was the perfect place to take in all of the activity in Cetona and slow down your pace to enjoy Tuscany. There are so many beautiful towns to visit within a short drive.
We walked up the beautiful curving small streets of Cetona, with one surprise after another around every corner. But, we were so happy to be right on the square, to soak in everything so easily.
Philippa was very easy to communicate with, even though she's not always in Italy. When we were having problems with Wifi, she offered to send a local over right away to help.
If you're looking for a quite spot, with a very unique and perfectly positioned home, within Tuscany, look no further.
Thank you for your wonderful review. I'm so glad you and your family enjoyed the apartment and the location. It's always a thrill when others feel the magic of this special place.
It could not have been nicer.
The Apartment is spacious and comfortable. Everything was spotless, and welcoming. Works best for two couples, but easily a family.
Thank you for your review. And thanks for your very nice hand written note when you returned the keys. I'm glad you were able to take advantage of the Nilo's and Il Merlo. It's wonderful to have so many dining options strides from the apartment.
A True Gem
This was our second trip to this marvelous town of Cetona in Southern Tuscany and our second stay at Casa Mannino. Cetona is an unspoiled village, with most of the buildings dating from before our founding fathers were born. They like things that way and they keep things that way. Casa Mannino comprises the entire second floor (first floor if you're European) of a ca. 1800 (my guess) building, fronting directly on the piazza, which hasn't changed much in the intervening centuries. Except for AM deliveries and the weekly market, there is no traffic in the square. We enjoyed watching the young children march to school each morning and the lovely church bells ringing.
Just below is a bakery, whose aromas wake you in the morning. There's a cafe right outside the door if you don't want to brew your own coffee. In fact, you could go days without ever leaving the square. There's food and wine and bread and excellent restaurants all within a few steps. A new wine bar just opened adjacent, so you can sit in the piazza and sip some of Italy's finest while watching the sun set behind the Tuscan hills. Stroll over to Nilo's for a memorable meal. Stop at the Sports Bar for a gelato (coffee and dark chocolate mix recommended). Go to bed. Repeat.
The apartment itself is lovely and huge - a rare treat. The main room is majestic and every inch is decorated with trompe l'oeil art the like of which could never be duplicated. You really feel as if you're dining/reading/having cocktails in a squire's country castle.
Good wi-fi, well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds. If you like to cook, fresh ingredients are available in very short walking distance and all the necessary pots, pans and utensils are there. The dining table seats 16-18 so invite friends.
If you prefer to explore the beautiful countryside, it's an easy drive to many of the well known and lesser known Tuscan towns and baths. Public transportation is easy via train to Rome, Florence, Arrezo just to name a few.
Truly a rare treat to relish, enjoy and remember. Take pictures - impress your friends.
Thank you so much for your kind words. It gives us huge satisfaction when others enjoy the apartment and town of Cetona as much as we do. Hope you’ll come back a third time!
A Special Place
Our introduction to Cetona and the surrounding area. A wonderful base for day trips to Sienna, Assisi as well as smaller hilltop villages too numerous to record here. Comfortable, well appointed and charming.
Happy you enjoyed your stay. You’re right. The area is full of beautiful places to explore.
Absolutely beautiful-spacious and we’ll appointed
Cetona is a picturesque Tuscan town with fabulous views. There are many small villages and towns nearby that are a delight to visit. Although it is a small town, Cetona has all that you need and great restaurants. The apartment is right above the center of the piazza and very well located
I couldn't agree more that Cetona is fantastically placed for enjoying the loveliest places in Tuscany. Thank you for your nice review. And thank you for coming back a second time!
The Val di Chiana area is known for its olive oil, wines and its very special grass-fed beef used for the famous 'bistecca fiorentina' (Florentine steak). Etruscan tombs and artifacts are a feature of Chiusi, which is about 10 minutes from Cetona. In the hills surrounding Cetona, there is a network of caves with remnants from the bronze age. Cave tours take place throughout the year.
