About Maria Killoran
Originally from South Manchester, I moved to Bleak House in 2006. I saw the property on a Friday night and bought it with one bid the following Tuesday at auction. Bleak House has always felt a warm, caring house . The changing seasons bring their own beauty and I never tire of waking to watch the sun rise as the nature comes alive and follow the night stars as they travel on their annual journey - at Bleak House you too can disconnect and discover the undiscovered Peak-District .

What makes this Cottage unique
I love Bleak House, it is a house with much history set in a small hamlet dating back to the 12th century. In recent years, I have researched the families who lived here and in the area since the 1600s. The newly restored Bleak House Cottage is the original stonemasons home. The location is magical throughout the year and every day has its own special beauty. I never tire of driving into Leek or Buxton, just a short distance, and seeing the majestic Roaches, the autumn mists flooding across the valley like a sea, spectacular wildlife from stags, curlews, owls, kestrels and so many more. We are set in natures paradise where the seasons of the year are still clearly defined, from the first snowdrop announcing the end of winter to the nesting swallows departing marking summers end. If you love the countryside, you too will love Bleak House Cottage. The cottage has been a labour of love, I have sought to create a beautiful environment without destroying its heritage.

Lovely, comfortable little cottage. It’s a perfect base for walkers, and a perfect retreat for those tired of the city.
Location is a little hard to find, but once you’ve found it you are close to plenty of National Trust and English Heritage properties, as well as the trail through the Manifold Valley.
The owner lives just next door and is prompt to respond to messages. Checking in on arrival was super easy. And she has plenty of info on nearby attractions, including walking and town maps.
We would highly recommend!
Great relaxing break even though only for a couple of days Maria the owner was lovely .
Very well kept property , clean and in a great location. we will certainly stay again location is perfect if you want a quiet break with no interruptions and no traffic. The local pubs are all driving distance so driving is a little difficult if you are wanting a good drink however we took our own and enjoyed a few lagers in the cottage perfect. I think we will try the cottage next door next time which is larger and sleeps 4 as this one only sleeps 2 but perfect for we wanted. Again regards to Maria a perfect hostess.
Had an an amazing time. Lovely cottage everything you could need and more. Maria was perfect host as well.
A beautiful, compact cottage for two in a great area of the Peaks.
The house is cosy and peaceful, and only ten/fifteen minutes from Buxton and the Dark Peak. It’s also an ideal base for the High Peak (Bakewell only twenty minutes drive). A warm welcome with wine and oaty biscuits :) and the owners were friendly and available to help with questions about the cottage and area. Loved it, and can’t wait to come back.

Lovely and peaceful
A lovely cottage. We spent 3 nights there with our dog. Foggy the whole stay, but so warm and welcoming. Well equipped and comfortable. Very quiet too, disturbed only by the calling Curlew from the surrounding fields. Maria very helpful and she makes the best Victoria sponge! One thing would have been useful... hooks behind doors for wet jackets. Overall a fabulous stay. Will definately come back when there is a chance of clear night skies, because there is no light pollution at all.
Thank you for for your kind review, you were great guests to host and hopefully we can welcome you back in the future. Yes, hooks are helpful, Bleak House Cottage usually has use of the back store for wet boots and jackets.
Bleak House Cottage is just fabulous, perfect location, spotlessly clean and welcoming, perfect.
Bleak House Cottage is the swèetest cottage ever. Ideally located to visit so many places within a few miles. Maria is a wonderful welcoming host, with a wealth of useful information on places to visit etc.
