About the property

Set in an idyllic setting with stunning views across Dartmoor

Down Cottage is part of a magnificent estate built in 1911 for the Jameson whisky family, Down Cottage sleeps four people and offers the perfect mix of luxury and seclusion. Set just outside the pretty Stannary town of Chagford, it’s a great base for walking on Dartmoor and for generally relaxing and getting away from absolutely everything!

About 1½ miles from the centre of Chagford, Down Cottage is set high on a hill with wonderful views towards Meldon Down and the surrounding moor. The cottage overlooks a shared drive to one side of the main house and is attached to an arch that leads to a stable yard. There are no horses now and peace and quiet is assured. The owners live in the main house with their three dogs. Immediately to the front of the house is a small, enclosed lawned garden with a mature copper beech hedge. To the side is a small terrace with garden furniture – a perfect secluded suntrap looking out over glorious countryside.

Guests staying at Down Cottage are welcome to explore the extensive ten-acre gardens and grounds of the main house. As well as the formal gardens and lawns there is an area, almost like a mini-tor, of moss-covered granite boulders, a great place to sit and contemplate, with wonderful views. The grounds extend down to the South Teign River and makes a delightful walk.

The cottage has been renovated with sensitivity and style, using muted Farrow & Ball colours and an eclectic mix of largely antique furniture and quality soft furnishings lovingly sought out and styled by the owners.

On the ground floor there is a lovely sunny breakfast/dining room with an open fire, a well-fitted compact kitchen with slate flooring and a wood burner plus a cloakroom/toilet.

On the first floor is the the lounge which enjoys far-reaching views out across the moor. It has comfy sofas, reading lights and a TV and DVD player. The double bedroom is decorated in Oriental style and has a 6’ four poster bed. There is a flat screen TV and the bedroom’s clothes-hanging space is on its own landing giving plenty of room and privacy. The twin bedroom is elegantly furnished in creams and browns - the beds can be zipped together to make a queen size double bed - and there is plenty of wardrobe space and a wall mounted TV. The views from this room over the surrounding countryside are stunning. The bathroom is elegant and well equipped with a bath, plus bath-shower and washbasin. The WC is separate.

Stunning Chagford Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in this charming granite cottage just outside Chagford, our favourite Devon village! The cottage is beautifully furnished and very cosy, a pleasure to come home to after exploring the magnificent Dartmoor area. Our hosts in the magnificent nearby manor house were welcoming and friendly and we look forward to further stays in the future!

Down Cottages is a wonderful home from home. Set in magnificent secluded grounds. It is well equipped, extremely comfortable and cosy. It is well situated, with a shortage walk from Chagford and lovely walks on Dartmoor. A delightful place with hospitable owners. We will certainly return. Wendy and Robert

A gorgeous cottage on a spectacular estate. Very comfortable and spacious with everything you need, including a great washing machine and drier. The owners have a stunning garden that you are free to wander through. Chagford is very convenient for all day-to-day grocery items. A very lovely area, close to fabulous walks on the moor. Beautiful!!!

Beautiful property in a stunning location

  • 5 of 5

Even though it can accommodate up to 5 Down Cottage still presented big value for money with just three of us staying here. The house is very tastefully furnished with a lovely dining room downstairs, a comfy sitting room upstairs and plenty of space. It is set in beautiful grounds of Dartmoor oak woodland and formal gardens, and far reaching views of the Dartmoor island hill of Meldon. Only a mile to Chagford. Can't wait to stay again!

Beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

Down Cottage is a lovely setting. Beautiful views that stretch out across the hillsides of Dartmoor. The cottage was very well appointed, clean, close to Chagford, and well situated on the moor. Walks outside the cottage door, on the Outer Down property, lead down to the the river and are quite special.

I found the owners to be very attentive if needed, and have lovely dogs. Since I am a dog lover, that was a benefit. You have privacy and quiet, and the beauty and tranquility of the countryside.

One surprise for me was how much I enjoyed Chagford! Very nice people and some wonderful shops. The church right off of the town center is special, and has a wonderful ceiling, and the grounds felt like a story waiting to be told...

Definitely recommend Down Cottage and Chagford. Two transportation recommendations; Dartmoor Safaris for day trips, owner Cyril. Taxi transport locally, Peter, number available through Down Cottage.

The small Stannary town of Chagford, prettily nestled among the Dartmoor hills, is a great place to visit. At its heart are the two well-known family-run shops of Webbers and Bowdens – a visit to both will take up at least half a day of your time! There are also traditional craft shops and local artists, clothes shops, cafés and pubs, all clustered around a small square with a pretty ‘pepperpot’ building at its centre.

There is an award-winning outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts and superb walking in every direction. The River Teign hurries through woods and meadows nearby and on below Castle Drogo (National Trust), an imposing landmark set high on a granite outcrop.

The town of Okehampton and City of Exeter are around half an hour away in opposite directions, or take a stunning drive across the moor to come to the pretty town of Tavistock. The whole expanse of Dartmoor is on the doorstep waiting to be explored.

If you want to travel further afield, Devon has glorious south and north coasts.
