Guestbook comments from the manager

Two of us are from Nova Scotia, two from Florida and one from Lake Louise, Canada. Love the laidback life on the north shore - wind, waves, mountains, turtles, ohana - nothing better than that. The windward side is the place for us. Some of us here many times since 1965, some of us here for the first time. All would come back. Truly an aloha house.

Charming tranquility on the beach

  • 4 of 5

We chose to stay here with two other couples for 5 nights. The small town feel close to the north shore is exactly what we wanted and this property was perfect for that. We spent most of the days exploring the island but took advanatage of early morning kayak rides and evening ocean swims each day. We really enjoyed the fact that the house had kayaks, surf boards, snorkel equipment and beach gear there for our use. The master bed was super comfy and waking up to the ocean was heaven. Only nitpicks we had was the grill was unusable- the grates really need to be deep cleaned or replaced and a new grill brush needs to be purchased. That was a bummer and forced us to cook inside the house where it was sweltering in the kitchen and living room. Would have really appreciated a window unit or two in the main area but we do understand we are on an island and not everywhere has AC. Anyways besides from that everything was perfect and we couldn't have been happier. Looking forward to returning soon!

Beautiful views

  • 4 of 5

We had a few glitches during our stay, but our concerns were addressed in a quick and fair manner. We loved waking up to the sound of the ocean and watching the sunrise over the Pacific. As an added bonus, we were able to see Hawaiian Monk Seals and turtles twice during our stay. My son played basketball across the street on the most picturesque court we have ever seen!

Some good, some bad!

  • 3 of 5

First the good points. Close to all activities on North shore of Oahu. Polynesian Cultural Center, beaches, food trucks. Nice home with many nice remodeling touches. Directly on beach (loved the sound of the waves).

Now for the bad. On arrival, strong odor noticed in house, traced to defective dishwasher which was full of foul smelling water and food waste. Owners housekeepers arrived and remedied the problem but it took them almost four hours, time we were unable to use home's kitchen. Additionally, home has about four room unit air conditioning units which were unable to keep up with the summer time heat. Only one bedroom (the smallest) was able to keep cool. It got VERY warm in the unit! If you don't mind merely relying on the "tradewinds" to keep cool, great place. One other thing, home is barely off the main road and exiting the property calls for due diligence as there is a "blind" spot! Owner needs to continue to update and replace some worn curtains, etc.Especially on lower level.

Tropical Fun

  • 4 of 5

Positives: Truly Beachfront. Breezes and ocean sounds/views really give that Tropical vibe. Good WiFi and TV reception. Ceiling fans and portable fans helped cool the house down. Bathrooms have been updated. We didn't have a problem with bugs.

As with any beach house, things can get worn out over time. We understand this. (A few updates would really help!) There was burned food left in the oven, so I had to clean it before using it. The grill also needed attention.

This house is very close to the main road. Backing out was tricky on busy days.

The emails were very descriptive and helpful in planning our trip. We made lots of happy memories.

Blissful week on the beach

  • 4 of 5

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our week in Hau'ula! We loved the sounds of the waves crashing on the sand right behind the home and watching the sunrise each morning from bed (I don't know how they did it, but the master bed is aligned perfectly with the sun in the morning / you don't even have to move to see it come up if you leave shades open!). Our only negatives: the air conditioning is horrible. We had a few sticky nights and the built in units throughout the house don't work. There were portable units that did NOtHING and made for a few uncomfortable nights sleep. Also, we bought all the fixings for a great BBQ outside - when we got back to the house and took cover off grill - we found it to be rusted, old food still ON the grill, grease everywhere, and no propane -- It needs to be replaced or cleaned heavily. We ended up cooking our feast on a kitchen pan, but still was disappointing as we smelled the amazing cookout going on next door.

The location was perfect for us - we spent most of our time traveling around the entire island and it was a great base camp.

Ocean Stay

  • 4 of 5

The location has a wonderful outlook with the ocean lapping the beach below our property. The property has a far superior top floor to the entrance floor. It is well equipped, spacious and comfortable. It is on a busy main road which can make driving out a little difficult.

Car: necessary

Hau'ula and the surrounding area is often likened to 'old Hawaii,' still representing what Hawaii once was. Instead of large malls and chain restaurants (i.e. Waikiki), the area has family-owned gift shops, unique little restaurants, and a pace of life that many envision when planning their Hawaii trips.

Highlights of the area:

(1) five minute drive to the Polynesian Cultural Center, Hawaii's #1 tourist attraction

(2) many great hikes (some with waterfalls) in the mountains directly behind the place

(3) lush green foliage and mountainsides, drawing comparisons with Maui

(4) good, local people offering a glimpse into 'true' Hawaii living: a truly authentic Hawaiian experience

(5) twelve minute drive to Turtle Bay Resort, and their golf courses, restaurants, bars, massages, helicopter rides, etc.

(6) minutes to good surfing spots, and only about 20 minutes to famous big-wave spots like Pipeline and Sunset Beach

(7) quiet, tranquil, peaceful...the best way to describe Hau'ula!

Other Activities: Island's best hiking in the mountains adjacent to the house.
