HOUSE DESCRIPTION: The upstairs Studio, Maile Treehouse--was custom built to bring the Rainforest in with it's abundance of large windows. There is a view from every room and in all directions, wood construction throughout and custom everything! The built in fireplace is two sided with a rotating flat screen above so that you can view both TV and fireplace from the living room, bedroom, and the lava rock surrounded jacuzzi tub. The tub is set in a bay window just steps away from the cozy Select Comfort Bed, with cozier still-- heated mattress pads. These are among the many touches we have added to make your stay as luxurious and delightful as possible. Tall ceilings, rich Brazilian cherry floors, built in bookcases and cabinetry, skylights..., built with our hearts as well as our hands--for the purpose of passing on a feeling and experience of Volcano that will be as warm and memorable for you, as it is to us.

About Leslie Hess

ALOHA! We hope you'll enjoy our home.

Leslie Hess purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Leslie Hess chose Volcano

Having lived here over 30 years, Volcano remains our favorite getaway.. so finally in 2003 after searching to buy a getaway that we could also use as a vacation rental.. it became clear we needed to build what we wanted. We spent 4 years of weekends driving up from Waimea, to hand clear and hand build our labor of love. We finished July of 2007! Everyone who has stayed has felt the care and enthusiasm that we have put into our version of the perfect getway.

Fabulous place, stunningly beautiful, loved it all. What a perfect way to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary!

Your home is perfect.  The attention to detail is wonderful.  Sure got a kick out of the different 'finds' during our stay. This home was part of making our second Honeymoon remarkable.

This was truly one of the nicest experiences in our life. Being able to 'truly get away' along side all the lovely touches you have thought about made this a truly amazing and fantastic stay. We will be back next year!

Highlight of our Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a trip to the Hawaiian Islands and by far the highlight of our vacation was our time spent at Maile Tree House. Since returning, we have raved about this beautiful, warm and cosy home to anyone who will listen.

We were thrilled to discover something new about the house each day and loved uncovering all the little 'surprises'. The vases of fresh flowers in every room were an especially nice touch.

Although the pictures on the website are lovely, they cannot possibly capture the uniqueness of this perfect piece of paradise. It has to be seen to be believed!

Thank you so much Leslie and Michael for not only your warm hospitality but for the wonderful lasting memories from our time at Maile Tree House.

Charming, cozy, one of a kind place

  • 5 of 5

We loved it! It was so close to Volcano national park, literally just a few minutes away. It had all of the comforts of home with all the warmth of a cozy blanket.

Charming, cozy, romantic and peaceful. Who could ask for more?

  • 5 of 5

The Maile Treehouse was our favorite place to stay while visiting three different islands on our trip to Hawaii.

The Treehouse, located in the quaint Volcano Village community is so elegant and tastefully decorated, yet cozy and charming and I learned some tips to use for my own home while there. You really feel as if you are living in the treetops of the rainforest with lush greenery all around and the birds singing to you every day. I loved sitting out on the lanai a and enjoying nature's music. There is a pretty garden area out back to enjoy as well. So peaceful! We chuckled and marvelled at all the little whimsical surprises all around, I found myself looking out for them.

We received a special aloha welcome from our hosts which immediately made us feel at home, as well as a special celebratory gift for our anniversary. Mahalo! Everything we needed was provided, the kitchen and bath area very well equipped, and a washer and dryer to use.

The location was excellent for visiting Volcano National Park, just a few minutes drive from there. We went there at night to view the orange glow from the Kilauea Cauldron as well as going during the day on the Chain of Craters road (go all the way to the end to see the arch, the view is amazing), the lava tube and the Volcano House (they have a really nice gift shop and a restaurant that overlooks the lava, just make reservations weeks ahead of time). It was also convenient and easy to get to Hilo where we went to meet up with Arnott's Lodge to go on a summit and stars tour on Mauna Kea (highly recommend!). It is a bit further drive to the Kaihlua-Kona area but still easy to navigate.

There are multiple restaurants and cafes in the area, the guestbook has a map and listings with good tips. Make reservations for the fine restaurants, they fill up quickly.

We highly recommend the Maile Treehouse for couples (very romantic), families (they have an additional guest area on the bottom floor), and singles, too, especially if you want a peaceful haven to enjoy in the "treetops" of the rainforest (by the way, it doesn't rain all the time there like you may think). Our only regret, that we couldn't stay longer. This will be our go to place if we are blessed enough to get to go back. Mahalo to our hosts for giving us a home away from home that will stay in our memories, forever.

Cozy, cheerful, well-appointed and good location

  • 5 of 5

Highly recommend this lovely VRBO. It's obvious the hosts put lots of thought into ensuring a comfortable stay. They provide lots of extras such as flashlights, rain gear, jackets, bath salts and coffee. The lanai and garden seating areas are charming and were mosquito free. The bed is comfortable and the shower feels almost like you're showering outdoors in the forest when you open the windows. The house guide book contains lots of recommendations for restaurants, hikes, private guides etc. Even the light switches are helpfully labeled.

We had a delicious dinner at the Ohelo Cafe and a wonderful lunch at Ono Cafe in their peaceful garden.

We spent four days in the park and were impressed with the passionate rangers and volunteers, great hikes, the awe inspiring Chain of Craters road and, best of all, a boat ride to watch lava pour into the ocean. Once in a lifetime opportunity. Don't miss it.

And the Treehouse is conveniently located to all of these wonderful experiences. We had good weather but it's also a great place to read by the fire on a cool, rainy day.

Thanks for a wonderful stay Leslie and Michael.

Beautiful and cozy place!

  • 5 of 5

The Maile Treehouse was a perfect place to spend a few days exploring the Volcano area. The house is close to the Volcano Village shops and restaurants, but far enough away to feel very secluded and private. The National Park entrance is just a couple of miles away. The house is super cozy and truly does feel like a (luxurious) 'treehouse' as it's on the second floor and is surrounded by trees on all sides. The kitchen is convenient and well stocked with everything we needed. We definitely recommend staying here and hope to be back one day!

Perfect way to spend our 25th Anniversary!

  • 5 of 5

WOW! Everything about the Treehouse is a WOW!! Will hit the highlights. We went and spent 4 nights to celebrate our 25th anniversary and was really nice to see a bottle of Champagne waiting for us. The house was beautifully decorated for Christmas. The layout is perfect. A lot of house in a limited area. What is really cool is that you are in the trees and it is lush and green. Since it is fully surrounded by windows, you might as well plan on waking up with the sun or use the eye masks that is provided. Leslie has really thought how she can make your stay a pleasant one. It has the little extras that made the difference. Beach towels, sun tan lotion, (it rained a lot of our stay so did not need)umbrellas, coats, games, books, movies, etc. What is also great is the location to the Volcano National park. We would keep our ipad on with the webcams and when the volcano was active , we would jump in the car and be there in 5 minutes. We also liked the shower and big jacuzzi tub. The shower is like being in an outdoor shower but indoors and the tub was awesome. All very cool. Great place to stay!
