HOUSE DESCRIPTION: The upstairs Studio, Maile Treehouse--was custom built to bring the Rainforest in with it's abundance of large windows. There is a view from every room and in all directions, wood construction throughout and custom everything! The built in fireplace is two sided with a rotating flat screen above so that you can view both TV and fireplace from the living room, bedroom, and the lava rock surrounded jacuzzi tub. The tub is set in a bay window just steps away from the cozy Select Comfort Bed, with cozier still-- heated mattress pads. These are among the many touches we have added to make your stay as luxurious and delightful as possible. Tall ceilings, rich Brazilian cherry floors, built in bookcases and cabinetry, skylights..., built with our hearts as well as our hands--for the purpose of passing on a feeling and experience of Volcano that will be as warm and memorable for you, as it is to us.

ALOHA! We hope you'll enjoy our home.
Leslie Hess purchased this cottage in 2005
Having lived here over 30 years, Volcano remains our favorite getaway.. so finally in 2003 after searching to buy a getaway that we could also use as a vacation rental.. it became clear we needed to build what we wanted. We spent 4 years of weekends driving up from Waimea, to hand clear and hand build our labor of love. We finished July of 2007! Everyone who has stayed has felt the care and enthusiasm that we have put into our version of the perfect getway.
Fabulous place, stunningly beautiful, loved it all. What a perfect way to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary!
Your home is perfect. The attention to detail is wonderful. Sure got a kick out of the different 'finds' during our stay. This home was part of making our second Honeymoon remarkable.
This was truly one of the nicest experiences in our life. Being able to 'truly get away' along side all the lovely touches you have thought about made this a truly amazing and fantastic stay. We will be back next year!

We have just returned from a trip to the Hawaiian Islands and by far the highlight of our vacation was our time spent at Maile Tree House. Since returning, we have raved about this beautiful, warm and cosy home to anyone who will listen.
We were thrilled to discover something new about the house each day and loved uncovering all the little 'surprises'. The vases of fresh flowers in every room were an especially nice touch.
Although the pictures on the website are lovely, they cannot possibly capture the uniqueness of this perfect piece of paradise. It has to be seen to be believed!
Thank you so much Leslie and Michael for not only your warm hospitality but for the wonderful lasting memories from our time at Maile Tree House.

I've used VRBO for many years and this was by far the best rental experience I've ever had! The moment you walk into the Maile Treehouse you are surrounded by lush rainforest and complete privacy. The home is adorable! My daughters and I loved all the little personal touches in the home, including the fresh flower arrangements and books, games and DVD's. The home was spotless and included everything you could possibly need if you wanted to prepare a meal, tons of blankets for chilly nights and even rain jackets! The fireplace was awesome, and provided all the warmth we needed in the evenings and early mornings. Leslie was very responsive and so easy to work with, and had books filled with ideas for places to visit and restaurants to try. If you are visiting the Big Island, don't miss out on the opportunity to stay here a few nights and explore the Volcano region!
The Maile Treehouse was a great find for our stay in Volcano. As part of a big milestone birthday celebration, my partner and I wanted to spend several days seeing and learning about the volcano at Hawaii Volcano National Park. The "treehouse" (actually a second level flat but truly with windows all around looking at the trees) was completely private and comfortable. There is a great whimsy to the home decor that is very charming without being too precious or fussy. And the place is warm, cozy, well-equipped, and totally relaxing - a welcome respite after long day of hiking around.
We used the fireplace to stay warm in the cool mountain evenings, as well as had a good soak in the terrific jacuzzi tub. I loved that the kitchen was really well equipped (with good knives, thank you!) and we prepared and ate all our meals at the house.
Leslie's recommendation guide was also very helpful and instrumental in our having a really special visit at the volcano as we used the Friends of HVNP guide she suggests.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Maile Treehouse to friends or family planning to visit Volcano - and I'll be back next time we're in the area!
This place is amazing. If it's available, rent it. The photos show the house accurately: it is clean, comfortable, spacious, and utterly delightful. The kitchen is well-equipped, the bed is insanely comfy, and the soaker tub and fireplace are most welcome after a day of hiking in the national park. The lanai is the perfect spot for dinner -- we ended getting takeout and bringing it home because it was such a lovely spot to sit and stare at the garden below. There are windows all around the house (and no curtains), but I never found privacy to be an issue. Quite the opposite: I was constantly spying on the birds that were flitting through the trees. My best moment here was standing in the shower with the windows open, hot water pouring over me, and watching and hearing apapane fly around the trees just outside. Truly magical!
Leslie is a delight to work with--answers emails and even texts very quickly.
The Treehouse was a great place to stay for the Volcano portion of our trip - super close to the park so that we could hike and explore for as long as we wanted, and equipped with everything we needed so that when we returned, we could have a relaxing evening. The jacuzzi tub was a plus for our sore legs and feet! Leslie was responsive and helpful, and we would absolutely stay here again!
We thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay at the Maile Treehouse. We had ample information for the area and good directions but still found getting there a bit of a challenge. But, once there, we found it easy to settle in and enjoy the ambiance. It was clean, well furnished and provided everything we needed to enjoy the area. We even woke up to a light rain one morning which was magic in the treetops. Everything at the Volcanoes National Park was easy to experience from hiking to dinner at the Volcano House, although a reservation for dinner is a must and the night view from the Jaggar Museum was the best. The only negative was being rudely turned away from the Kilauea Lodge 10 minutes before their lunch hour ended - we were starved but found a delightful spot nearby.
