Why Eileen Hodgson chose Burgh By Sands
THE BARN WAS AT RISK OF BECOMING DERELICT THEREFORE , ALICE , WHO WAS BORN HERE, WANTED TO RESTORE IT BACK TO A HOUSE. ARCHIVE RESEARCH GAVE HER THE HISTORY OF THE BUILDING. SOME OF THE WALLS HAD TO BE REBUILT AS THEY WERE BUILT OF CLAY- DABBING BUT THE RESTORATION HAS BEEN DONE IN KEEPING WITH THE RURAL CUMBRIAN STYLE. .

Outstanding Property and Amazing Owners
We stayed at this cottage end of May for a hiking trip in Lake district. It is less than 30 minutes drive away and there are a lot of supermarkets close by.
On the first day we arrived really late because of the traffic but Richard (the owner) was so understanding that he let us check in late and he stayed awake until 1 am waiting for us. He greeted us with a warm welcome and showed us around the property. It was outstanding, spacious and very very clean. We had a little basket of goodies waiting for us in the kitchen which Eileen (Richard's wife) left for us. She had baked this amazing Victoria sponge cake and i have to say it's the best cake I have ever had in my life. I would go back to the cottage just to have Eileen's cake. It deserves a 5* just like the cottage. Eileen and Richard made us feel like we were home and always made sure we were okay. As cheesy as this may sound, I was a bit sad to leave on the last day as I felt like I was leaving my family. Overall, the stay was PERFECT!! I would highly recommend this property.
Thank you very much for your lovely review. Would love to see you all again in the future. You were all fun and good company. A real pleasure.
Regards Eileen and Richard

Lily Cottage has been beautifully converted, and Eileen and Richard's attention to detail makes it a real "home-from-home". It was an ideal base for us for Carlisle and the Solway Coast. Highly recommended!

Amazing Holiday Cottage.
We came across this lovely cottage through this site while we were looking for a holiday. The reviews were excellent which gave us more assurance. To be honest, our experience was the best we ever had and don’t think I can put them together on words. It was such a nice cottage. Richard and Eileen were the best hosts we could imagine of. There was a lovely hamper for us at the cottage with homemade cake and short bread. They also provided us with bread, milk and a bottle of Prosecco. The cottage had everything we needed and child-friendly. Rooms were lovely neat and clean. We really recommend this place and looking forward to visiting again soon.
Thank you very much for your complementary review of our cottage. It is always pleasing for us to know that our visitors have enjoyed their stay. We know how important a break away is for people. look forward to seeing you all again in the future.
Regards Eileen and Richard
The cottage is situated in the linear village of Kirkbampton only two miles from the Solway coast which is an area of outstanding natural beauty, famous for bird watching, views, history and Spectacular sunsets. The area is rural and ideal for cyclists and walkers being just two miles from part of the Hadrian's wall national trail and the start of the west coast cycle way.
Haaf net fishing is exclusive to the Solway coast which is a fishing practise brought here by the Vikings. The fishermen use the flow of tides on both the English and Scottish sides of the Solway to catch Salmon and Trout. It is the only place in the world that this type of fishing is sill done. Visitors to the cottage could enjoy the experience of Haaf net fishing which is organised through one of the local pubs in the area.
Other interesting features of the Solway include, the history of the iron bridge which crossed over from Bowness to Scotland. There is also the monument of Edward 1st which stands on the marsh at Burgh By Sands.
There are nature reserves within walking distance from the cottage, some of which have activities for children and bike hire.
The cottage is within an easy forty minute drive to the Lake District. The historic city of Carlisle is only a ten minute drive away. Carlisle has the interest of the austere and splendid castle which has dominated Carlisle for nine centuries, the beautiful cathedral, Tullie house museum, the Citadel drum towers which were originally erected in 1541 by Henry the VIII ,shopping, bars , restaurants , and night clubs.
Scotland is within easy access either by road or train. Edinburgh and Glasgow are only short in- expensive journeys away by train (one hour) or around a two hour drive away by car.
The cottage is cosy, peaceful and comfortable with security and privacy. it has been lovingly restored to a high specification in keeping with the local area. There are beautiful north views of the coast and the hills of the Scottish borders beyond. The travel links are within easy access as there is a good road structure to enable visitors to travel and explore this interesting and unspoiled area.
