Overview

About the property

House in the rock, in the center of Castelmezzano, one of the most beautiful towns in Italy

Ancient house in the rock, once the home of a magician. Restored respecting the original architecture but with all the modern conveniences. Positioned in the center of Castelmezzano, listed as one of the most beautiful towns in Italy and home to the famous 'Angel Flight': http: // www. volodellangelo. com / index. asp?site = eng

For his original architectural features, the house is reported as a tourist attraction by the guide 'Lonely Planet'.

Built entirely by hand in the rock, was formerly the home of a wizard, as indicated by a plaque at the entrance of the City. From the gate, you enter by climbing stairs carved into the rock. You enter a first room with two windows, floor rock, ceiling with wooden beams and a cave in the rock with a kitchen and dining table. The kitchen has all the necessary equipment, oven, refrigerator, and various. Here is the old stone fireplace, usable. Then it leads to a large living room with balcony, hardwood floors and ceiling with wooden beams, where you can watch television (including NETFLIX subscription channels, with the possibility of watching movies and TV series), music (stereo with CD collection to disposition and ability to connect your smartphone). There is an armchair and a comfortable sofa bed which can sleep two people. The room has a second fireplace modern, this can be used. Passing under an archway leads to a small cave with a double bed, a really unique place in which to sleep! The bathroom is located in the stairs, inside the property, for the exclusive use of the dwelling (see photos).

Guests have access to the entire house: the kitchen, the living room, the bedroom and the bathroom in the rock, located on the stairs but for the exclusive use of the dwelling. The two chimneys are working properly and can be used (wood available). Available all the tools for cooking and eating, fridge, oven, blender, squeezer and various tools. Possibility of using satellite television, stereo / radio with CD player and ability to connect your smartphone, dvd player and Xbox 1 with collection of games, hair dryer, iron. No smoking inside the house but you can smoke on the balcony. Prohibition to bring pets.

The owner or his delegate, is to welcome guests and to provide guidance on living and can be contacted for any need.

The 'House of the Magician' is positioned in the center of Castelmezzano, in the main street, just after the church square. It 'the perfect spot to make the famous' Flying Angel' between Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa. The two countries are also connected by a beautiful, easy excursion and, recently, also a fantastic via ferrata (to do with proper equipment and experience). Possible activities include: hiking, exploring food and wine; cycling and mountain biking; climbing (wall units in Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa).

Castelmezzano is a great base for exploring Basilicata, in particular, in addition to the Lucanian Dolomites, the city of Matera, European Capital of Culture, the area of Vulture and the Pollino National Park. The owner of the house can give you all the information about it. The best way to get around is by car. However, Castelmezzano is connected to power with a public bus.

Things to highlight: where is the bathroom? The house is an old troglodyte house. This is the element that makes it unique, with its own strengths but also with some minor inconveniences, such as the one (the only one) to have a bath in the stairs. When it was built the houses did not have bathrooms inside !!! To preserve the structure originally built as it was decided to place the bath in the stairs. Please note that the bathroom is in the building, then indoors (the gate is closed with a structure of plexiglass to protect from the cold and a curtain to ensure privacy), and is for the exclusive use of the dwelling (see photo ).

Beautiful, fairytale location.

I got to be in the Casa del Mago for five weeks and it was incredible. The town is the prettiest place I've ever been and the people I met were so kind to me -- and very patient with my poor Italian. Pierfrancesco and Simona were absolutely incredible hosts. They treated me like one of the family. Hoping to go again next year!

The apartment and the town are just incredible. You'll never want to leave.

  • 5 of 5

Where to begin? Pierfrancesco and Simona are the perfect hosts - so welcoming and gracious and kind-hearted. I've gotten to know them over my long stay in the apartment and consider them wonderful new friends. The apartment itself is truly magical. It's built right into the rock of the Little Dolomites and it's wonderfully cool, open, spacious, and airy. You feel like you're in another world -- but with all the conveniences of modernity. The kitchen is great for cooking on your own if you want to do that. It has everything you could need. And the bed and other furniture are very comfortable and cozy. The apartment is right in the center of Castelmezzano, a town that is almost impossible to describe. It's the most beautiful place I've ever been -- with its narrow, winding stone alleys (which the Italians call "vicoli") and with its majestic rocks jutting up out of the earth, and with its incredible views out over the hills. It's also probably the friendliest town I've ever visited. Be sure to meet Luciano and Mariella at the bar down the road, get lunch at Peperusko with its incredible views, and for dinner don't miss Trattoria al Vecchio Scarpone -- incredible antipasta. Beautiful food from the nicest people in the world. Just ask Pierfrancesco. He knows all the best places. Last, but certainly not least, take a chance to trek the via ferrata with Pierfrancesco if you can; climbing those high rocks and looking out over beautiful Lucania will take your breath away.

Magical!

  • 5 of 5

Him:

Our time at the Casa del Mago was indeed magical. Pierfrancesco was much more like a wonderful host than a landlord, and we very much enjoyed our time with him and his family, as an added bonus. We would rate the CdM six stars instead of five if it weren’t for a handful of tiny things… and the fact that HomeAway won’t allow it. ;-) There were some issues with the modem, and Pf was all over it, trying to repair it twice before deciding to replace it with a new one. The “casa” itself was mega-cool, the kitchen workable, and the bed more comfortable than others on our trip. In fact, our time at the CdM and in and around Castelmezzano was our favorite of this trip. Great walking, hiking, and a so-cozy meal or two at the town restaurant. In November, when we were there, the town was quite quiet—we were the only obvious tourists there—just what the doctor ordered. We would definitely recommend the CdM to other travelers.

Her:

The home, village, and hosts made our visit fit perfectly with the aura of the Casa del Mago. The stars were so close that I felt as though I could reach out and touch a shooting star as we watched it go by. The paths smell of oregano as we tromped along and the house was perfectly real, from another time, and yet still very workable. Staying at the Casa del Mago was the highlight of our trip made even better by Pf, his genuine interest in making things work well, and his family for being so wonderful and welcoming. This is a stop that is definitely worth the time.

Soggiorno piacevole

  • 5 of 5

Magica atmosfera sulle Dolomiti lucane

  • 5 of 5

Castelmezzano is listed as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. In addition to the breathtaking panorama of the Lucanian Dolomites, is a place famous for the Flight of the Angel: attached to a steel cable you fly through the Dolomites from Castelmezzano Pietrapertosa. More information at http: // www. volodellangelo. com /. The area is beautiful for walking, hiking, cycling, mountain biking. Have been set up walls of climbing. Since very little has opened a beautiful railway which connects with Castelmezzano Pietrapertosa. Countries that are also connected by a beautiful path called 'The path of the seven pietre'che retrieves an ancient path peasant of about 2 km. Castelmezzano is a great starting point to explore the attractions of Basilicata, Matera and in particular, the European Capital of Culture, 70 km.
