Lake Maggiore is 54 km long, with a coastline of over 150km and at its widest is 12 km. Like all the other Northern Italian lakes it is a deep glacial basin fed by rivers; Verzasca, Giona, and Cannobino flow into the lake. Its major outlet is the Ticino which, in turn, joins the river Po just south-east of Pavia.
Piedmont and Lombardy are two major regions surrounding the Lake but the most northerly section of Lake Maggiore extends a dozen kilometres into Switzerland, the lowest point above sea-level in Switzerland.
The climate as with all these protected lakes is mild in both summer and winter, producing lush vegetation, with beautifully planted gardens in wonderful villas growing rare and exotic plants. Well-known gardens include those of the Isola Madre, Isola Bella and the Isole di Brissago, that of the Villa Taranto in Verbania, and the Alpinia botanical garden above Stresa. These lakes are almost like a lost world. They also have their monsters apparently!
Reno di Leggiuno is ideal for enjoying all manner of activities, ranging from lake swimming and cycling to fishing, boat hire, beach days, water sports, sightseeing and golf.
The nearest golf clubs are Golf Club Varese (18km) and Golf Dei Laghi (12km), whilst just 2km away, visitors can explore the famous Monastery of Santa Caterina del Sasso and nearby Arona (8km away). The nearby ‘Golden Triangle’ resort of Laveno (5km) offers frequent ferry crossings to Stresa and Verbania as well as a wealth of restaurants, a pretty lakefront promenade and a cable car up to the mountain for panoramic lake views.
Milan Malpensa is located just 37km away and for those looking to enjoy a spot of city culture and shopping; Milan city can be reached in less than 70 minutes, by car or train from Laveno.

Golf Dei Laghi, Via Trevisani 926 – 21028 Travedona Monate (Varese)
Opened in 1993, the course was designed by the architect Piero Mancinelli and built on a predominantly wooded land that once belonged to the Visconti family.
This is not a particularly long course, but the many natural obstacles (trees, ponds, streams) often make it necessary to place the shot with particular attention in order to facilitate the subsequent shot.
The main feature of the course is the fact that there are six very ample holes on the plain, six holes that wind through the woods, and finally six holes in a hilly area.
The layout of the course means that you can play two, six, nine or eighteen holes and always end up close to the club house.
The course over the hills offers breathtaking views of Monte Rosa and Lake Maggiore and makes the game challenging and enjoyable for players of all levels, requiring care and strategy. A course to be loved, rather than challenged.
