This is an ideal home base for a Manhattan vacation, especially for families. The apartment is located in Harlem on 129th Street, between 5th and Madison in a neighborhood of historic brownstones. A tree-lined block with a community garden and 2 playgrounds nearby. Private entrance on the ground level. The owners live above. Less than than a 10 minute walk to two major subway lines that take you to virtually all the major site-seeing venues in Manhattan. There is also a busline a block away that travels down 5th Ave. to Central Park, the Met and other museums.
The full kitchen and dining room means you can save money and have some relaxing meals at home during your vacation. A washer and dryer in the apartment means you can pack light-great if you have young children. A Pack-n-Play, booster chair or high chair are also available for your young ones. There are grocery stores, coffee shops, restaurants and shopping a short walk away. Everything you need for an affordable, exciting, yet relaxing New York vacation. All taxes and cleaning fees included in base price!
Community and Convenience: Our brownstone is located in Harlem, which is at the northern end of Manhattan. Harlem is truly a 'community' within a large city. Neighbors know each other and come out on their stoops to say hi. Most buildings are less than 10 stories, so you can see the sky rather than be surrounded by skyscrapers. Residents cultivate community gardens as well as their backyards. It has a friendly atmosphere that is different from many other Manhattan neighborhoods. Yet, our brownstone has very convenient access to see all of New York City's attractions in other neighborhoods. The M1 bus is one block away on 5th avenue and travels right alongside Central Park, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim. The 4/5/6 subway (east side) is less than a 10 minute walk, and 42nd Street(Grand Central)is only 3 stops away. The 2/3 subway (west side) is also less than a 10 minute walk and Times Square is just 5 stops away(approx. 20 min).
Comfort: We travel often, and really appreciate staying in villas and homes where it's clear the owners care about our comfort and convenience. We try very hard to provide our guests with a comfortable, homey environment. There is a washer/dryer with detergent in the apartment, along with an iron/ironing board, and hair dryer. The bed linens are high quality and the kitchen is fully-equipped with microwave, blender, coffee maker, etc. as well as spices. The apartment has it's own thermostat and hot water heater, so your comfort is under your control. We live in the upper floors of the townhouse, so we are available for questions and directions as you need them. There is a phone with local service so you can book restaurant reservations, and call to make plans with others when you need to. We have provided a binder with listings of local grocery stores and restaurants. There is also wireless internet available if you like to travel with your laptop.

About Jean Moreland
I grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin and have lived in Minnesota, California and moved to New York City in 2003, when I married my husband. We have lived in Harlem for 14 years now, have 2 children, and love the fact that we can be close to all the wonderful things New York has to offer, yet have a wonderful space to retreat back to on a quiet block in a culture-rich area.
Jean Moreland purchased this Apartment in 2001
Why Jean Moreland chose East Harlem
My husband bought this brownstone in 2001, when it was a burned out shell with a tree growing up through the middle. He had always wanted to own a brownstone in Harlem. Many others were renovating at the same time, and we have forged a community of old and new. We love have the space and quiet (and view of the sky!)in Harlem while having the convenience of the nearby subways to easily get anywhere in Manhattan.
What makes this Apartment unique
This is a retreat away from the hustle of the tourist sites, where you will have two bedrooms plus a sofa-bed in the living room. You'll have a full kitchen and laundry and space to relax in the living and dining areas. Yet you are still convenient to subway and bus lines that can get you to the sites quickly to enjoy all NYC has to offer!

Perfect Spot for a NYC Adventure
My family stayed two nights at this rental in August, and it was wonderful. First, Jean is incredibly accommodating and easy to work with. We ended up getting in early, so she allowed us to drop our bags so we could explore the city.
Next, the location is terrific. It is located on a quiet street in a vibrant section of Harlem with plenty of great restaurants and activities nearby. There are also two subways stops within easy walking distance with easy access to all New York activities.
Finally, the apartment is nice, with comfortable beds and great amenities. Jean also has a great collection of possible activities and menus.
All in all, I would highly recommend this rental whenever you visit NYC. I know we will rent it again if we return.
I love when guests enjoy our neighborhood as much as we do. In the summer there are often free concerts and shows as well. It's nice to have a place to go that's a bit out of the huge tourist crowds, but close to transportation to get to the sites when you want to.
My two adult daughters and I had a wonderful stay in New York earlier this week. Our accommodations were just perfect for us and everything was very clean and tidy. Our hostess, Jean, couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. I would definitely recommend the Home Away site and Jean's place in particular. As a matter of fact everyone we ran into were very friendly and helpful for our entire stay.
Jean was great! Very helpful and quick to respond to any questions, give suggestions and friendly.
Home was exactly as described. Clean and ready for our week long stay.
Great place to stay uptown with easy access to downtown
We had a great trip. Jean was very helpful. She lives in the apartment upstairs so that’s a plus. To be honest, we didn’t spend much time in the apartment since we were seeing the sights all day. But we brought our kids on this trip so having a place with two bedrooms and comfy beds was awesome. There’s no way you can find a place with two bedrooms and a full kitchen within 30min of downtown for a decent price unless you use vrbo. This apartment is a great option.
Well equipped and comfortable 2 bedroom apartment
Checked off all our boxes-clean, roomy, quiet, a few blocks from subway stops and lots of nice restaurants. Our host lives upstairs and was available to get us settled in and give us tips about the area.
Fantastic home away from home!
It is a lovely place, and Jean has stocked it with great thought. We were one couple getting together with our two adult kids and the apartment allowed us to have perfect family time together. Thank you, Jean!
Located in the ground floor of a brownstone on a quiet block in historic Harlem, which is at the north end of Manhattan. The Apollo Theater, The Studio Museum and Jazz Museum of Harlem, Sylvia's famous soul food, wonderful restaurants and coffee shops all within walking distance. The lively 125th Street shopping district is a 5 minute walk---where you can get everything from Mac Cosmetics and Hip-Hop clothes, to African drums and shea lotions. Restaurants such as Marcus Samuelsson's Red Rooster, Chez Lucienne, and the Corner Social have created a lively culinary corner within a few blocks. Three grocery stores, Whole Foods, Pioneer and Wild Olive all nearby. It's less than a 10 minute walk to the 4/5/6 subway lines or the 2/3 subway lines which take you all the way up and down the East and West sides of Manhattan. Both Grand Central and Times Square are about a 20 minute subway ride away. The M1 bus is one block away and travels down 5th Avenue along Central Park and past the Met, Guggenheim and other museums. Other Activities: It's New York City--you can do anything and everything!
