Less than than a 10 minute walk to two major subway lines that take you to virtually all the major site-seeing venues in Manhattan. There is also a busline a block away that travels down 5th Ave. to Central Park, the Met and other museums.
The full kitchen and dining room means you can save money and have some relaxing meals at home during your vacation. A washer and dryer in the apartment means you can pack light-great if you have young children. A Pack-n-Play, booster chair or high chair are also available for your young ones. All taxes and cleaning fees included in base price!
Community and Convenience: Our brownstone is located in Harlem, which is at the northern end of Manhattan. Harlem is truly a 'community' within a large city. Neighbors know each other and come out on their stoops to say hi. Most buildings are less than 10 stories, so you can see the sky rather than be surrounded by skyscrapers. Residents cultivate community gardens as well as their backyards. It has a friendly atmosphere that is different from many other Manhattan neighborhoods. Yet, our brownstone has very convenient access to see all of New York City's attractions in other neighborhoods. The M1 bus is one block away on 5th avenue and travels right alongside Central Park, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim. The 4/5/6 subway (east side) is less than a 10 minute walk, and 42nd Street(Grand Central)is only 3 stops away. The 2/3 subway (west side) is also less than a 10 minute walk and Times Square is just 5 stops away(approx. 20 min).
Comfort: We travel often, and really appreciate staying in villas and homes where it's clear the owners care about our comfort and convenience. We try very hard to provide our guests with a comfortable, homey environment. There is a washer/dryer with detergent in the apartment, along with an iron/ironing board, and hair dryer. The bed linens are high quality and the kitchen is fully-equipped with microwave, blender, coffee maker, etc. as well as spices. The apartment has it's own thermostat and hot water heater, so your comfort is under your control. We live in the upper floors of the townhouse, so we are available for questions and directions as you need them. There is a phone with local service so you can book restaurant reservations, and call to make plans with others when you need to. We have provided a binder with listings of local grocery stores and restaurants. There is also wireless internet available if you like to travel with your laptop.
I grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin and have lived in Minnesota, California and moved to New York City in 2003, when I married my husband. We have lived in Harlem for 10 years now, have 2 children, and love the fact that we can be close to all the wonderful things New York has to offer, yet have a wonderful space to retreat back to on a quiet block in a culture-rich area.
Jean Moreland purchased this apartment in 2001
My husband bought this brownstone in 2001, when it was a burned out shell with a tree growing up through the middle. He had always wanted to own a brownstone in Harlem. Many others were renovating at the same time, and we have forged a community of old and new.
This is a retreat away from the hustle of the tourist sites, where you will have two bedrooms, a full kitchen and laundry and space to relax in the living and dining areas. Yet you are still convenient to subway and bus lines that can get you to the sites quickly to enjoy all NYC has to offer!
Six Germans enjoyed your apartment very much. All of us slept well and felt very safe in your place. Hopefully, we'll come back very soon.

The location was great! Very close walking distance to subway and surrounding attractions. Owner was kind and made a book for local attractions, restaurants, etc. The binder itself could have been updated to look better. The beds were terrible and it is right below the owners home so there was a lot of noise when at the apartment. The accommodations including kitchen utensils were adequate and minimalistic. If you choose to stay here you do it for location. Don't expect comfort or any bells and whistles. The price was reasonable for a 2 bedroom but again the beds were really uncomfortable and there are no extras. You get exactly what you pay for and nothing more. We were also warned by the owner to move our vehicle on street cleaning days and we informed her the last day we were going to leave it there because a NYC city worker said it wouldn't be a problem that "no one moves their vehicles." I told her that morning we were going to catch the subway and be back later to get the truck. Subsequently we returned at 2 pm to find the parking ticket she had warned us about and ironically no ticket on the truck behind us or the car in front of us that were in the same spots since we left that morning. Coincindence? Anyway. For lack of comfort alone and the poor condition of upkeep I would choose to stay somewhere else next time. But location was great!
We booked our trip 8 months in advance and stumbled upon this listing .I was hesitant to stay in Harlem but after reading Jean's description and the great reviews I knew we had to book it. You will not beat this price for a party of 5 close to Manhattan. We walked to the train stations each day often returning late at night (after 10p). We felt safe at all times. It's a great neighborhood with a lot of character. It's not upscale or suburban and you will see trash on the streets.
The bedrooms are small but there is still room for clothes and suitcases in the closets. Having a laundry in the apartment was very handy! The kitchen has almost anything you could possibly need although we only used bowls and spoons for cereal. A table for 6 was very nice! The living room was big enough to allow us to spread out after a long day in the city.
The only issue we had was parking challenges. We got luck the night we arrived and found a spot on Madison just around the corner. We had to move it Monday morning because that is a cleaning spot. I drove around for an hour trying to find a spot before finding one on 131st Street and 5th Avenue. That was not bad but it took a long time to find it. When we returned that night I got lucky and found a spot on 129th a few houses down from this apartment. That made loading much easier on our last day. Jean indicated parking has become more difficult over the years as more homes are rehabbed in the area.
Jean is great to work with and very responsive. She provided some great tips for our trip but was also respectful of our space. I strongly recommend this place for your next NYC vacation!
This place was great. It was easy to find and Jean was very kind. She showed us around the place and how things work eg wifi. It was very clean and comfortable for us. Easy access to public transportation and some great locat places to eat. It truly is a Harlem Hidden Gem! Thank you Jean for your hospitality!
We stayed last weekend at this apartment, and it couldn't have been any better. There were four of us, and the size was great. This was SO MUCH better than staying at a hotel. The condo had everything we needed, and the beds were very comfortable. Easy walk to the subways, and we enjoyed being out of the hustle and bustle of the touristy areas. The best part of the rental? JEAN! She answered emails within the hour - even on a holiday!
It was a pleasure working with Jean. We had a great time and had everything we needed to feel at home.
I really enjoyed my stay here. The basement apartment is well-lit, fully stocked (coffee and filter + more), and spacious. Although we did not see Jean upon move-in, it was simple and seamless. We found street parking for the weekend 1 block away. Scheduling a time to meet Jean in the morning of checkout was easy and deposit refund was nearly instantaneous.
The apartment was about 4 blocks from the Subway and it was an easy trip downtown. During the night the were plenty of places within walking distance that are worth your time. Next time I am in NYC, I will look to this place again.
This apartment is located in the ground floor of a brownstone on a quiet block in historic Harlem, which is at the north end of Manhattan. The Apollo Theater, The Studio Museum of Harlem, Sylvia's famous soul food, and President Clinton's office are all just blocks away. The lively 125th Street shopping district is a 5 minute walk---where you can get everything from Mac Cosmetics and Hip-Hop clothes, to African drums and shea lotions. Restaurants such as Marcus Samuelsson's Red Rooster, Chez Lucienne, and the Corner Social have created a lively culinary corner within a few blocks. It's less than a 10 minute walk to the 4/5/6 subway lines or the 2/3 subway lines which take you all the way up and down the East and West sides of Manhattan. Both Grand Central and Times Square are about a 20 minute subway ride away. The M1 bus is one block away and travels down 5th Avenue along Central Park and past the Met, Guggenheim and other museums.
