Overview

East Harlem Apartment Rental Photos and Description

Apartment - 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s) - 1 Bath - (Sleeps 4-6)

This is an ideal home base for a Manhattan vacation, especially for families. The apartment is located in Harlem on 129th Street, between 5th and Madison in a neighborhood of historic brownstones. A tree-lined block with a community garden and 2 playgrounds nearby. Private entrance on the ground level. The owners live above. Less than than a 10 minute walk to two major subway lines that take you to virtually all the major site-seeing venues in Manhattan. There is also a busline a block away that travels down 5th Ave. to Central Park, the Met and other museums.

The full kitchen and dining room means you can save money and have some relaxing meals at home during your vacation. A washer and dryer in the apartment means you can pack light-great if you have young children. A Pack-n-Play, booster chair or high chair are also available for your young ones. There are grocery stores, coffee shops, restaurants and shopping nearby. Everything you need for an affordable, exciting, yet relaxing New York vacation. All taxes and cleaning fees included in base price!

Community and Convenience: Our brownstone is located in Harlem, which is at the northern end of Manhattan. Harlem is truly a 'community' within a large city. Neighbors know each other and come out on their stoops to say hi. Most buildings are less than 10 stories, so you can see the sky rather than be surrounded by skyscrapers. Residents cultivate community gardens as well as their backyards. It has a friendly atmosphere that is different from many other Manhattan neighborhoods. Yet, our brownstone has very convenient access to see all of New York City's attractions in other neighborhoods. The M1 bus is one block away on 5th avenue and travels right alongside Central Park, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim. The 4/5/6 subway (east side) is less than a 10 minute walk, and 42nd Street(Grand Central)is only 3 stops away. The 2/3 subway (west side) is also less than a 10 minute walk and Times Square is just 5 stops away(approx. 20 min).

Comfort: We travel often, and really appreciate staying in villas and homes where it's clear the owners care about our comfort and convenience. We try very hard to provide our guests with a comfortable, homey environment. There is a washer/dryer with detergent in the apartment, along with an iron/ironing board, and hair dryer. The bed linens are high quality and the kitchen is fully-equipped with microwave, blender, coffee maker, etc. as well as spices. The apartment has it's own thermostat and hot water heater, so your comfort is under your control. We live in the upper floors of the townhouse, so we are available for questions and directions as you need them. There is a phone with local service so you can book restaurant reservations, and call to make plans with others when you need to. We have provided a binder with listings of local grocery stores and restaurants. There is also wireless internet available if you like to travel with your laptop.

About Jean Moreland

I grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin and have lived in Minnesota, California and moved to New York City in 2003, when I married my husband. We have lived in Harlem for 10 years now, have 2 children, and love the fact that we can be close to all the wonderful things New York has to offer, yet have a wonderful space to retreat back to on a quiet block in a culture-rich area.

Jean Moreland purchased this apartment in 2001

Why Jean Moreland chose Manhattan

My husband bought this brownstone in 2001, when it was a burned out shell with a tree growing up through the middle. He had always wanted to own a brownstone in Harlem. Many others were renovating at the same time, and we have forged a community of old and new.

What makes this apartment unique

This is a retreat away from the hustle of the tourist sites, where you will have two bedrooms, a full kitchen and laundry and space to relax in the living and dining areas. Yet you are still convenient to subway and bus lines that can get you to the sites quickly to enjoy all NYC has to offer!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Jean,

Six Germans enjoyed your apartment very much. All of us slept well and felt very safe in your place. Hopefully, we'll come back very soon.

A wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

A perfect location. Convenient to the trains... Both Metro North line and the subway. Convenience store right on the corner. Restaurants a short walk away. Clean and cozy and wonderful to come "home" to after a hectic day in the city. Quick response to any questions I had before we arrived... and easy check in/check out. I would re-book this place in a heartbeat. I certainly will the next time I venture to the city.

Great stay

  • 5 of 5

We had an an awesome stay at Jean's place. The property was just as it appeared in the advertisement and offered a great base to explore the city in the heart of Harlem. Whilst the area from the 125th tube stop may not be the most assuring, the property itself is really close to the vibrant life of Lennox street which feels far safer because of the many people on the streets throughout the night. It also has many restaurants and various vendors that offer a glimpse into life in Harlem.

Jean was also a lovely host who made us feel right at home, and I would not hesitate to recommend her place to anyone looking for a place to call home while they explore Manhattan.

Fabulous NYC Rental

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in Jean's apartment! We are a family of six and my four children were thrilled with the fact there were six chairs at the table so we could all sit down together to a meal. The apartment was clean, amenities wonderful, and Jean was fabulous to work with. She is very easy to contact and her responses were always very quick and helpful. The apartment is about equal distance from two subway stations - for those who aren't used to walking in a city and using public transportation the stations may feel a little far. For us, it was a fine walk each morning and evening. Street parking was free and we were able to find a space, even after each street cleaning move, which was a huge bonus to have the car close. I doubt you'll be able to find a better deal in NYC for a family or a group. We've already been recommending Jean's apartment to friends all over the country!

Perfect home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

We were so fortunate to find this lovely apartment for a couple's weekend in the big apple. Jean was awesome to work with from booking right on to our stay. Having her upstairs was very handy especially when our door lock broke at 10 pm at night. We texted her and she came right down to assist us and resolve the issue. Apartment is spotless, very comfortable and private. Much more spacious than a nyc hotel and a lot more reasonable. Fully equipped kitchen so we could have coffee and breakfast before heading out to tour. I think the area is up and coming. Very nice street. Very easy to access transportation to get to midtown. Taking the bus is great because you see a lot of the sites. Heading to midtown you go right down along central park so you see a lot of sites you would see on a tour. Highly recommend getting a metro card which was recommended by Jean. We got a 7 day metro card for 31 dollars and were able to navigate by subway or bus very smoothly. Bus and subway stops few blocks away. We enjoyed living like a new yorker for a weekend. We wil definitely stay at Jean's lovely apartment again and will recommend her place to friends and family.

Perfect family apartment

  • 5 of 5

We loved the apartment! What a great location; out of the hustle and bustle but still a convenient express subway ride downtown. Plenty of space for a family of four, everything we needed and a wonderful coffee shop just down the block. Jean was a wonderful host, friendly and helpful; we would go back in a flash. A great New York City experience.

This apartment is located in the ground floor of a brownstone on a quiet block in historic Harlem, which is at the north end of Manhattan. The Apollo Theater, The Studio Museum of Harlem, Sylvia's famous soul food, and President Clinton's office are all just blocks away. The lively 125th Street shopping district is a 5 minute walk---where you can get everything from Mac Cosmetics and Hip-Hop clothes, to African drums and shea lotions. Restaurants such as Marcus Samuelsson's Red Rooster, Chez Lucienne, and the Corner Social have created a lively culinary corner within a few blocks. It's less than a 10 minute walk to the 4/5/6 subway lines or the 2/3 subway lines which take you all the way up and down the East and West sides of Manhattan. Both Grand Central and Times Square are about a 20 minute subway ride away. The M1 bus is one block away and travels down 5th Avenue along Central Park and past the Met, Guggenheim and other museums.

Other Activities: It's New York City--you can do anything and everything!
