|Minimum Stay||3 - 7 nights|
Moritzburg is the apartment situated on the middle floor of Villa Richter, facing the wood.
Watch tv or just relax in the leather armchair and ditto 3 seater sofa in the living room. The views over the village and the rock formations at the end of the Amselgrund valley are always a joy to watch.
The living room also doubles as a bedroom. A double box spring bed guarantees a good night's rest. Sofa bed and a separate bed for adult or child are in the conservatory.
This completely renovated and monumental villa is situated on a mountain slope in the picturesque spa town of Rathen and offers exceptional views of the Elbe and sandstone rock formations. Its small railway station, the vintage paddlewheel-steamboats cruising the Elbe, and the characteristic mountains all add to the suggestion of being in a model-railway landscape.
In addition to many sporting activities Saxon Switzerland has a lot to offer culturally (theatre, castles, narrow-gauge railways and many museums). Should you need to recover, there are many Wellness treatments to choose from. And the local wines, from the most northern vineyards in Europe, are delicious.
We - Sylvia Brinkman and Hugo van der Sluijs - met when we were students. Being passionate mountaineers we used as much of our spare time as possible to go away on climbing trips in Belgium, Luxemburg and, of course, Germany.
Around this time we started thinking about having a wonderful place to ourselves one day. Of course we fantasized a lot about our future ideal home. Our haven would be in a quiet area, with interesting scenery, ideally a place where rocks, deciduous forests and vineyards (agreeable climate) are found together. We then thought that the Pfalz, where we loved to climb, was the most likely place.
Our favourite sport changed from climbing to tour skiing, but our dream remained. We finally decided to put our plans into action a couple of years after the reunification of Germany. East Germany was completely unknown to us and so we set out to explore.
After a few visits to the east it was finally Saxon Switzerland's turn to receive us as their guests in Rathen. Right from our first visit one thing was crystal clear: this place surpassed everything we had ever seen.
We had a great time and, back in Holland, we could not stop thinking about Rathen. On one of our next visits we found Villa Richter. On first inspection we realized that this project would require a lot of dedication. And, the seize of this building surpassed anything we had ever dreamt off. The Villa's exceptional setting finally brought us round to take this big step.
After years of preparation the scaffolding was put up around Villa Richer on 1 May 2012. Some one-and-a-half years later we granted our architect discharge and we welcomed our first guests in the spring of 2014.
We hope you will be just as excited as we are by this location and its surroundings. We enjoy it immensely and from our house we now watch other climbers tackling the rocks.
Sylvia Brinkman purchased this villa in 2007

_________Bastei Brug (Bastion Bridge)_________
The 'Bastei' (Bastion) is the oldest tourist attraction and a major landmark in Saxon Switzerland. This place offers fantastic vistas of the bizarre rock formations that inspired many painters and poets, like Caspar David Friedrich. The 'Bastei' rises nearly 200 meters above the waters of the river Elbe which flows 110 meters above sea level. From Villa Richter the Bastei is a thirty minute journey taking the easy road, or approximately 70 minutes through the 'Schwedenlöcher'.
___Vestung Königstein (Königstein fortress)___
The Königstein fortress is a unique example of European hilltop fortress architecture. Situated on top of a table hill the fortress walls rise majestically to a height of 40 meters. The 9.5 hectare hilltop fortress, with its 2,2 km long rampart offers a splendid view of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and the Eastern Ore Mountains. In total there are over 30 different buildings: such as the well house, the oldest Saxon garrison chapel, the Gatehouse, the old and new armoury and the old barracks.
_ Felsenbühne Rathen (Rathen Open-Air Stage)_
Near Villa Richter lies one of Saxon Switzerland's most popular destinations - Felsenbühne Rathen . Its unique location with its stage backdrop of real rock formations and its high round towers, turn it into, what is doubtlessly, "Europe's most beautiful natural theatre."
The evening performances are absolutely sublime. Under the canopy of the starry night sky the works of Shakespeare, Carl Maria von Weber and many others, are a joy to watch.
