LA CHARTREUSE DU MAINE:
La Maison de Marc is one of the three independent holiday homes located in the outbuildings of La Chartreuse du Maine, an early 18th century delightful Manor. Here everything breathes peace, harmony and beauty. The estate of La Chartreuse du Maine encompasses 27 hectares (63 acres) of gardens, meadows and woods with many pathways, on the edge of the peaceful village of Cubjac. Within Le Maine you will enjoy relaxing in a lounge chair by the sunny swimming pool that overlooks the estate.
Located in the centre of the Dordogne region, La Chartreuse du Maine is the perfect relaxing base to experience France, get to know the Dordogne, go in search of 350,000 years of history of mankind, discover local gastronomy and wines, and be “happy like God in France” in a peaceful, bucolic atmosphere.
LA MAISON DE MARC :
This 2 bedroom stylish cottage, La Maison de Marc, is the detached farmhouse of La Chartreuse du Maine. This south-facing house has recently been restored to a high standard, preserving most of the original features. Tastefully furnished, this cottage includes a living room, a kitchen-dining room and a bathroom. All the ground floor rooms open onto a private flower garden and woods. Outside, on the terrace there is outdoor dining furniture and a BBQ for delightful meals under the old oak tree. Everything inside the farmhouse and outside in the estate: terraces, gardens, vegetable garden, speaks of a French ‘art de vivre’ in the bygone days.
THE VILLAGE OF CUBJAC:
The shady tree-lined entrance to La Chartreuse du Maine is on the outskirts of the village of Cubjac, which is in the Dordogne region on the banks of the peaceful Auvezere River. You can easily walk to the village center for a drink at a café or to do your shopping at the local bakery and general store. There is even a farmers’ market on Fridays with fresh local produce all year round, and hand-made regional crafts for sale in summer.
THE REGION AND 'PÉRIGORDINE LIFESTYLE:
It is not pure coincidence that man has been living in this paradise for over 350 000 years. When strolling alone in the superb unspoilt countryside you can just imagine why. Often, mostly in low season, you might catch yourself thinking the Dordogne has not changed at all. The joy of holidays in Dordogne is that nowadays you still can fully indulge in that ‘simple art de vivre’ which all these cultural and historical sites speak of. The Dordogne is synonymous with food and life in Perigord revolves around markets, recipes, seasons of mushrooms, truffles, foie-gras, broad beans, goats cheese, strawberries, wine harvest. Everybody here has a kitchen garden to grow their own preferred vegetable varieties. Every woman has her old secret recipes, a family heritage.
Your French English-speaking hosts, Catherine and Maxence:
We live permanently on site and are delighted to welcome you to our “maison de famille” and share with you our passion and knowledge of this Perigord region which has inspired so many writers, philosophers and artists. We are happy to share our extensive knowledge of the Dordogne region, and love to help with suggestions of best places to visit, scenic roads and itineraries, history of the region, little-known fine restaurants where you can enjoy regional specialties such as magret de canard and foie gras; wineries, farmers' organic markets… to make your stay with us a wonderful French experience. However, we are very discreet and respectful to our visitors’ privacy.
Catherine Lambert purchased this chateau / country house in 1925
La Chartreuse du Maine in Cubjac has been our family home for four generations. Catherine's great-grandfather bought it in 1925, even then, to escape the ‘busy town of Limoges’! All our lives, whilst living and working in Paris, we spent most of our holidays in this Perigord we love. Fourteen years ago we decided to leave Paris, restore our great-grandfather’s chateau and settle in the Dordogne. We wanted to share a certain 'Art de vivre' with friends and guests who would appreciate the harmony of an authentic beautiful place in this peaceful region of Dordogne.
Our tips: : Because of the unique location of this romantic cottage, in the centre of the Dordogne near Sarlat, you will have so much to visit you might feel ‘overloaded’! Anyway, accept the idea that you will never have enough time to see every place of interest, unless you come back every year for decades (which we would love). So, please take it easy, select the sites you’re be interested in: visit less, but in more depth. Or take the other option, don’t plan anything, wander aimlessly in this away-from-it-all countryside and let yourself be filled with wonder at each bend in the road. Whatever you choose, make the most of this quiet timeless life: at every moment experience the peace, harmony and beauty which are definitely the real magic of Perigord.
Le Maine was more than we ever expected, we and look forward to coming back to experience the other seasons. Louise and Sean Niven, London - January, 2005
Our time in this lovely cottage has been wonderful beyond our expectations.
You have both been marvellous hosts, warm, generous and informative. Your suggested itineraris and restaurants have been invaluable in helping us get to know this lovely part of France. We leave you reluctantly but with many happy memories.
Doreen & David Rosenthal, Australia – May, 2005
Your place was wonderful and the Perigord was magical. We hope to come back for another visit very soon. Lynn & Andre Raszynski, USA – June, 2005
We’ve had a fantastic time in the Perigord region. What a great way to experience France !
Please let us know when you have finished the other cottage so that we can book both and bring back some more friends.
We would love to share the experience with them too.

La Maison de Marc is a spacious holiday home, immaculately appointed in a French country style and with its own private garden. Set in the extensive grounds of a manor house, Le Maine, and complete with a beautiful swimming pool, it is located on the outskirts of a village and a convenient place from which to explore the Dordogne.
Catherine and Maxence are delightful and charming hosts with an extensive knowledge of the area. Their suggestions of sights to visit, markets and restaurants to savour helped to make our time there extra special. We wholeheartedly recommend this property.
It is a very nice and quiet place. Catherine and Maxencé are both very friendly persons, helping us to optimize our planning.
The place is located perfectly for doing Sightseeing and visiting a lot of attractive places in the area. The house is well equipped, very convenient and in a good shape. We can really recommend to stay there and enjoy the nature!

La Maison de Marc is a gorgeous, very well equipped holiday home. The cottage is tastefully styled, there is a private garden which you can sit/eat out in. The pool area is very relaxing and welcome on a hot day. Catherine and Maxence were wonderful hosts, they made us very welcome right from the start. They are both very knowledgable about the area and can give you lots of advice/tips. Catherine and Maxence also speak very good English! The strawberries, goats cheese, walnut bread and of course the local white wine were a much appreciated arrival gift.
Cubjac has a very good boulangerie, great bread, croissants and cakes.
During our stay we visited several places, Domme, Brantome, Perigeux, St. Jean de-Cole, La Roque de St. Christophe and even canoed down the Dordogne river for 9 kms from La Roque Gageac. There is of course plenty more to see and do.
This is a perfect place to stay if you need peace and quiet. Le Maine has its own secluded garden, perfect for a quiet read or a glass of wine. The kitchen is exceptionally well equipped. The house is very well presented. Catherine and Maxence are perfect hosts, always available with advice and help when needed and yet not at all intrusive. The pool is in a lovely spot in the grounds and is exceptionally well kept.
We fell in love with the donkey and seemed to spend a lot of money on carrots! He will remind you if you forget to take him one.
We have just returned from two wonderful weeks at this idyllic place. We were warmly welcomed by Catherine and Maxence, who made us feel immediately at home (and speak perfect English although they helped us to practise our French). They were always on hand to answer questions or give us advice- and they booked a charming baby sitter for us so we could enjoy a night out- but at the same time we didn't see alot of them and the cottage we rented was lovely and private.
We are a family of 4 (two young children 7 and 4) and this was a perfect retreat and also base from which to explore the local area. The cottage itself was immaculate and very well equipped with new appliances, beautiful bed linen and a Nespresso machine! We had two large bedrooms, and the bathroom was modern and super clean. We enjoyed making family meals and sitting around the tables- both inside and outside. There are only two other cottages which means you often have the pool to yourselves which we loved- but when the other family was around we had great fun together and the kids made friends. On that, the pool was divine- perfect temperature to cool down, super clean with lovely loungers and umbrellas for shade.
There is so much to do in the local area- we hired kayaks, played tennis, rode ponys, swam in nearby lakes. There is also a fantastic local English couple who hire out mountain bikes. Furthermore, you can also borrow bikes from Catherine and Maxence. Best of all they have a Donkey who the children fed (multiple times a day) and some lovely friendly cats.
We had a magical time and hope to return one day.
We have visited Le Maine on many occasions in fact this Summer was our fifth time to return. This is testament to how much we enjoy spending our precious holiday time there. We are a family of four and La Maison de Marc caters for all our needs. The cottage is beautifully styled keeping in character with its origins yet has all the modern cons integrated.
Outside the house there is a private garden to relax in and we took the opportunity to dine there most days. The grounds around the cottage are part of the bigger estate and are beautifully maintained. Our children of course love swimming in the pool on the grounds, it is very relaxing up by the pool with a lovely view of the estate.
Catherine and Maxence are the most kind hosts that you could wish for. They have always made us very welcome and have helped us in whatever way they could to get the maximum out of our stay in the Perigord region. Other companions in Le Maine include Zebulon the donkey, Iris the truffle locating dog, and the cats Bibi and Jojo.
The village of Cubjac is a short walk and there is an award winning boulangerie that my daughter I cycled to almost every morning for bread and pastries for breakfast on the bicycles that are provided by Maxence and Catherine. There is a busy shopping district (hyper market, etc) in Trelissac about 15 minutes drive and the city of Perigueux is just slightly further along this route.
We are always sad to leave Le Maine and this year like every other visit we promise to return as soon as we can. We intend to keep this promise!

Perigueux, the medieval Renaissance capital of the Perigord which contains the vestiges of a Gallo-Roman villa, offers many fine restaurants, good shopping and a wonderful market; Sarlat, nearby exceptional medieval town; Les Eyzies, known as the capital of prehistory; the Vézère Valley featuring 15 World Heritage UNESCO sites; the town of Brantome – called the “Venice of Perigord”; the 1,001 chateaux of the Dordogne region; the vineyards of Bergerac and Bordeaux; the stunning pilgrimage town of Rocamadour -- all of these await your exploration within a short drive from Le Maine.
