Antique Mill Stream Cottage is a 17th century treasure, a truly precious museum-like home with all the luxuries you'd want in a modern getaway home. Its location is in the heart of the Historic District, and the home presides over Eden-like grounds which include Town Brook waterfall.

How can it be that this wonderful home, built in 1688 had the amazing luck of not being remuddled, standing with persistence to the day when we were able to expose its King Posts, hewn from massive trees that must have been growing tall long before the pilgrims conspired to cut them down to create this amazing hand-made pilgrim home.

But history aside, you still want to be thrilled, coddled in modern comfort, beautiful bathrooms with mahogany seats, subway tile showers with replica plumbing, Sub Zero refrigerators fitted with what appears to be antique paneling, quality bedlinen and fluffy towels, WiFi, central air conditioning, a totally unique combination of luxury, history, comfort, amenities to make the most amazing memories.

The home is on two levels, with keeping room, large queen bedroom, napping room, full shower bathroom plus architecturally fascinating powder room (half bath) with exposed tree trunk joists, copper sink and faucet, countertop sliced from a huge pine at a nearby sawmill, bark on the edge. Also on the main level is the beguiling kitchen, with all the modern conveniences (gas range, microwave, garbage disposal, and as previously mentioned 2 Sub Zero refrigerators, 'disappeared' into the woodwork. Also on the first floor, outside, is the cozy brick courtyard, the barbecue terrace with Weber grill, overlooking the Eden-like garden and thrilling vistas of Grist Mill, Spring Pond, Town Brook, the waterfall, huge stone walls, herb gardens, Pilgrim spring (yes, the original settlers of America really did draw their drinking water from our yard!) and a charming mini-pond, spring, all descending to the waterfall with its soothing rushing sounds.

Upstairs, we offer a living room where you can send the tv watchers if you prefer to leave the first floor tv (hidden behind hand planed paneling) turned off while you absorb the amazing-ness of this luxury ancient historic experience. Lots of books and games and WiFi so each can find his or her own pastimes. Comfortable bedrooms - with historically influenced quilts and top quality linens, lighting, luxury.

We have had guest say they never wanted to leave, and guests from England who want to call it home.

-Queen "Tudor" bedroom, paneled walls, fireplace, shutters and architecturally fascinating modern bathroom (powder room)

-Napping Room - single bed with windows overlooking the waterfall

-Quincy bedroom - queen bedroom with original fireplace

-Nathaniel bedroom - double bed and windows overlooking waterfall

-Twin bedroom - also overlooking waterfall, with laundry adjacent with bonus mini bedroom with antique child bed for kids up to 10 (or very tiny full grown women.)

- Upstairs living room has sleep-able Crate and Barrel tree-trunk sofa the size

of a twin bed.

About The Owner

To me, creating the perfect waterfront getaway home is an art form. My lifelong career had been in designing publications, and later creating magazine illustrations (google 'robin jareaux') and painting expressionistic works on canvas. When I first decided to rent my weekend home so I could renovate an oceanfront cottage (which became, at great expense, 'Timberframe Cottage') I did not know this would become my work and my passion. Working in 2-D was fun and rewarding, but my new art is creating vacation homes that themselves are works of art. My goal with my homes, as with my art before, is to create an environment that transports you to a happier place, that exceeds your expectations, and in turn, your patronage lets me continue my art form a few more years. Please read the guest comments to see the generous and enthusiastic compliments we've received. Finding just the right furnishings, using classic Nantucket decor, using materials such as massive beams, barnwood ceilings, wide pine floors, RL sheets, antique cabinets, and creating gardens overflowing with roses and peonies, clematis, daylilies, gigantic buried stepping stones, blueberries, raspberries, foxgloves (can you tell it is June as I write this?) expanses of mahogany countertop, fine appliances, stone fireplaces, stained glass, with views that will take your breath away. Please look at 'all my rental listings' to see my portfolio art in the form of unique and extravagant vacation getaways. It is a labor of love... for you.

Guestbook comments from the owner

from a note left by Mary and Larry on Oct 24, 2012:

"Thanks so much! Your Lakeside house is awesome. We had an amazing holiday and we were quite lucky with the weather, too! Your cottage/house is well stocked with everything we needed. We did every paved bike trail and many hiking trails and there are a lot! We would definitely come back. Thanks again." Mary, Larry and Samson, Ontario, Canada.

Perfect getaway!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I recently stayed at this beautiful home, and we could not have been happier. The house is even more beautiful and comfortable than it appears online. The details are impeccable, and Robin has provided every possible comfort for her guests. All the appliances are very high-end, and the setting is just stunning. I usually like to eat out when I'm vacationing (because I cook for my family almost every night at home), but the kitchen was so gorgeous that I actually *wanted* to cook. And best of all, whenever we had a problem or concern, Robin responded immediately, and bent over backwards to make sure we were happy. I cannot recommend this home and host highly enough. Can't wait to come back!

Home from home.

Another very comfortable stay courtesy of Robin and John. The Lakehouse is a deceptively spacious property with a private/quiet location, and close to excellent self catering facilities. Having Route 3 (Jn 2) close by is very handy for jaunt's over to the Cape, or attraction's North.

All in all, an excellent well equipped/furnished property that should appeal to most travelling group's. Thank you again for all your effort's in providing a homely environment.

The LakeHouse was the perfect accomodation for our family of 4 generations - from 1 to 81! Being right on the lake, with the park like lawn, and even a hammock, was wonderful for the small children - and the adults who were trying to keep up with them. Robin and John are truly the King and Queen of New England hospitality - they answered every question, provided directions, and were immediately responsive to every need. LakeHouse felt like our own home - except with better appliances - completely comfortable, and very relaxing. We will definitely contact them when we next come to Cape Cod. Thank you for maintaining such high standards in your properties. You are the best!
