The houseboat was a good experience and a great place to stay while in Amsterdam. Ruth was very professional and responsive to any questions we had when we booked the property and arranged to meet us at the houseboat upon our arrival into Amsterdam. The houseboat was clean and well maintained and it was located close to public transport, a grocery store, and a couple of restaurants. If there is anything that kept me from rating it higher, is the boat is showing some signs of wear in the living area and the lower tiles in the shower in the bathroom, but overall it was a good location and we would stay there again if in Amsterdam.
Our family of four (including two pre-teens) stayed here for five days in August 2016. It proved to be an absolutely perfect location for exploring Amsterdam. The houseboat was clean, very well appointed, and our entire experience was positive. The central location meant that we could rely on transit and bikes throughout, or just walk the city. We were greeted by Julie who explained everything and was super helpful and accessible by email throughout our stay with our minor questions. We enjoyed every aspect of our houseboat stay, particularly coming home at the end of a long day of walking, and watching the boat traffic. Despite being right on the water we didn't experience any noise issues as Amsterdam has stringent noise rules for the canals. Supermarket just steps away was handy, there are beautiful walks just out the door, and while we didn't need any heating (it was steamy throughout the days) the boat cooled down nicely at night. We would recommend this without reservation to anyone and would stay there again in a heartbeat.
If you're headed to Amsterdam on vacation, staying on a houseboat is such a unique way to enjoy the city... but staying on this one in particular is a special experience. The location is amazing; you are steps away from a tram stop, and within reasonable walking distance of the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum. (Though we would advise renting a bike when you're in the city... why walk when you can bike?) The houseboat itself is just as advertised. The open-plan kitchen/dining/living area is perfectly sized and well-thought-out. On chillier nights, the gas fireplace (operated with remote control) warms up the entire boat quickly, and sitting on the large sectional sofa in front of the fire is the perfect way to end any day. There is ample storage in both bedrooms, which is impressive since space is always at a premium on a boat.
The owner is a truly wonderful host; she made sure we had everything we needed and could operate the appliances properly, and also followed up immediately when we lost the water supply (due to a neighbor's DIY project), getting flow back on within 30 minutes. That's the kind of customer service you often don't get at a so-called luxury hotel.
A couple of quirks I should mention: Payment is largely in cash, so be prepared to obtain Euros in advance of your trip. The bathroom shower is small by American standards; if I were redesigning the bathroom I would substitute a larger shower and remove the bidet, but perhaps that's just me. The boat's exterior had recently been painted, so on our trip the boat was listing slightly to one side, which meant that the water on the shower floor needed to be pushed toward the floor drain. This may be fixed soon. Finally, be aware that because all waste is pumped out of the boat (so it doesn't flow into the canal), no paper waste may be flushed down the toilet. This takes getting used to, but is not a problem at all. The owner provides an air-tight waste bin next to the toilet to address this issue.
Overall this boat is a lovely "springboard" from which to see all of Amsterdam, and then fully relax on a relatively quiet part of the canals in the evening. If you've ever wondered what it would be like to live on the canals (in complete comfort), give this one a try!
We have spent a fantastic week on the houseboat Tempo Doeloe in the heart of Amsterdam. The suit is very comfortable, the location excellent. It was very pleasant to wake up every morning to the gently rocking waves of the first tourist boats bypassing. The hospitality of the stuff is prominent. We would recomend to everybody to stay here.
