|Minimum Stay||4 nights|
Nestled in a charming neighbourhood that is deep-rooted in its culture, with time-honoured traditions and adorned with historical architecture. A place where travellers can shop at the nearby markets, sample the local food and interact with its friendly citizens, all just around the corner. Spacious 5 bedrooms with 4 full bathrooms spread over 3 levels of 220 square meters, located in the Centre of Horta the Matriz district.
Casa Matriz is tastefully decorated in a classic style creating that warm home-like setting that is perfect for group travel. This accommodation facilitates large groups to stay under one roof. Therefore there is no need to rent separate accommodations; Casa Matriz can accommodate groups of up to 10 people comfortably.
With Top notch features: all three levels with internet, air cooling and air heating units. A superb gathering area, especially in the massive eats-in kitchen or entertain outdoors in the courtyard complete with wood fire grill and outdoor kitchen.
As a vacation property manager, Since 2007, we have been renting our own private vacation home and this experience and knowledge has made us aware of our guest’s needs and expectations. Our aim is to provide a quality vacation accommodation, personal, friendly service and useful informative options for all of our guests who choose to rent their vacation home through us.
We believe that staying at a private vacation home is a unique way of truly discovering everything that the Island of Faial has to offer. From the history, culture, the arts, to the gastronomy of its people.
Why I chose to represent Casa da Matriz:
Over the last several years a popular trend that is see happening in the Tourist industry is group travel particularly from former Azorean descendants who are travelling with their extended family members to retrace their ancestry roots in the Island of Faial.
I was lucky to find the match for this type of niche travel group in Casa da Matriz not only because of its size, but also for its ideal location, in the historical area of Matriz which enables the travelers to immerse themselves into the neighborhood, and absorb the traditions and culture within the city of Horta.
The accommodation was exactly as described, a big and beautiful house in the center of Horta, the largest town on Faial Island, in the Azores. The house is very comfortable and clean. Beautiful tile work on the walls and floors, marble in many places, modern with a lot of old world charm. The outdoor patio was a comfortable quiet place to relax in the sun and read or eat outside. Our party of ten were all comfortable. The rooms were large with wonderful views of town, the bay, and Pico. We enjoyed being in the town with restaurants and shops within walking distance along the waterfront where yachts from around the world come in during the summer. The painted flags on the concrete walkway along the shore are a treat to view. Taxi and van service is readily available for island tours and conveyance to restaurants and other venues in the evening. The house has a modern kitchen, clothes washing facilities, air conditioning, and five bathrooms. I highly recommend this rental for families and any moderate to large party as a getaway to a charming relaxing Mediterranean locale closer to the US than mainland Europe.
I really enjoyed my stay here. Zelda is welcoming and kind. Her house has everything a traveler needs to set up a home-away-from-home while visiting these beautiful islands.
There is an amble kitchen, clean bathrooms, inviting beds, great comfortable couches, an airy patio in back and best of all: a couple of balconies with stunning scenic views. There are several floors of pleasant rooms. Scattered throughout the house are ample power plugs (European power –Don’t forget your converter). We were very comfortable.
Zelda was full of answers to our questions about the island both before the trip and during. She responded quickly when we asked and had many suggestions about how to see the things we wanted to see.
This house is in the Matiz area of Horta in which there are many shops and cafes. These are in an easy walking distance of this spacious house. But it may be helpful to know that the entire area is built on a hill. For some the few block walk to the cafes may be too steep and a taxi may be required. Ask Zelda for a recommendation. She knew some of the local taxis drivers. Don’t let the walk stop you. Both the house and the city are gems.
The view from the balconies alone is worth the trip.
A comfortable way to travel. Beautiful house in a great neighborhood in Horta. It is well maintained, well-stocked and has pretty panorama views from its balconies. There is a Kitchen that fit all 10 of us in it and led out onto a back courtyard.
We giggled about our plans on the comfortable livingroom couches, debriefed our adventures in the kitchen, drank wine in the courtyard and I spent part of an afternoon sketching the marvelous scenery from a balcony. It doesn’t get better.
This house is located in the beautiful Matriz neighborhood of Horta, several blocks from the central shopping area. It is a short walk to the shops, library, post office etc. But it is hilly. Either bring your walking shoes or be prepared for taxis (which are plentiful).
Your hostess/owner is amazing, attentive and kind. She answered many questions beforehand so that we felt well prepared for our trip. Zelda, as a native, knows much about the island that she was able to make good suggestions. Such as for restaurants, a great guide and where to get a birthday cake for one of our group whose birthday occurred while we were in Horta.
My only complaint is the rooster that inexplicably cried loudly in the early mornings somewhere nearby.
Dearest rental on our whole trip. Kitchen had absolutely nothing in way of basics, unlike other houses we had booked so HAD to go out immediately to a shop even for a hot drink. Road noise and numerous cockerels at all hours meant we had to use ear plugs every night to get any sleep as 3 out of 5 bedrooms were next to the road. Location is up a steep hill and no pavements meant it was rather hair raising as cars seem to be driven too fast round corners in Horta ! Certainly not recommended for children. Courtyard space was good but in shade most of the day so no where to relax in the sun. Laundry powder provided which was good. Very clean and gave us a late check out which was appreciated.
I rented the house for my group of dirvers. We were looking for a big house with enough place for every one (9 divers with a lot of equipment), in the center of Horta.
This house is just fantastic, it is realy "big and beautiful" :o). Zelda is a fantastic host, doing her best to help us in every step of our stay on Faial.
This house couldn't have been more perfect for our group. It was located in a great location, close to lots of restaurants and shops. It was very spacious and well appointed. Zelda could not have been more helpful. She helped us arrange rides to and from the airport, and gave us lots of information about the Faial and Pico, the neighboring island. The only downside I could say there was, was that there is quite a hill that you need to walk up, although we found this to be great exercise. Also, the washing machine is small and the dryer takes a long time to dry the clothes. Other than this, though it was absolutely perfect. Thank you! If we are ever in the Azores again, we will definitely be staying here.
Matriz area is well fit for travelers who wish to take In the Museums, art galleries, walk along the Harbour, admire the painting on the seawall left behind by sailors or just have a laid back City-Break
Don’t forget your camera!
The Matriz neighborhood is full of architectural interest. A traveler can wander the cobble stoned streets and admire the historical facades of structures that were once former colonies, embassies, and fortes. Not only is Matriz area architecturally rich but also culturally intriguing, a traveler will certainly encounter their own magical surprises just around the corner.
In a minutes’ walk a traveler can find , stylish boutiques , jewelry stores, bakeries, grocery stores, vegetable market, butchers and organic markets.
The neighborhood has several casual cafes with small bars, and the most delightful Tea House for that 3:00 afternoon tea service in a garden setting. For lunch the popular plate of the day is offered by most local restaurants at an attractive price-point. Dining options, there are several from grilled fish, steak, seafood all in the area.
5 minutes’ walk from the house, a traveler can choose their favorite charter or whale watching company from a variety of host companies at the marina of Horta.
7 minutes’ walk from the house to the Port of Horta to embark on a day trip to the nearby island of Pico or Sao Jorge.
