About Zelda Melo

As a vacation property manager, Since 2007, we have been renting our own private vacation home and this experience and knowledge has made us aware of our guest’s needs and expectations. Our aim is to provide a quality vacation accommodation, personal, friendly service and useful informative options for all of our guests who choose to rent their vacation home through us.

We believe that staying at a private vacation home is a unique way of truly discovering everything that the Island of Faial has to offer. From the history, culture, the arts, to the gastronomy of its people.

Why Zelda Melo chose Azores

Why I chose to represent Casa da Matriz:

Over the last several years a popular trend that is see happening in the Tourist industry is group travel particularly from former Azorean descendants who are travelling with their extended family members to retrace their ancestry roots in the Island of Faial.

I was lucky to find the match for this type of niche travel group in Casa da Matriz not only because of its size, but also for its ideal location, in the historical area of Matriz which enables the travelers to immerse themselves into the neighborhood, and absorb the traditions and culture within the city of Horta.

Horta Port of Call: venture a little further, only 10 minute walk will take you to the new Port of Horta where a traveler can take a day trip or Island Hop to the Island of Pico or St. Jorge. Horta City makes an excellent base for travelers to visit other islands. Don’t forget your camera! The Matriz neighborhood is a city Centre residential area full of architectural interest. A traveler can wander the cobble stoned streets and admire many facades of historical buildings, former colonies, former embassies, and government house. Not only the architecture but the culture is fantastic, one only has to visit the nearby Tea House for 3:00 afternoon traditional tea, or visit the fishing area of Porto Pim watch the fishing boats come in with their catch. You will certainly Bump into your own magical surprise! It’s all just around the corner.

Highly recommend exploring Faial

  • 5 of 5

Our group of eight loved our stay in Horta for so many reasons.

- Zelda Melo sent us maps and recommendations ahead of time to help us plan our trip.

- This spacious and sunny home has a large kitchen with all the necessary equipment.

- The patio is a welcome place to linger over breakfast or dinner.

- Hot water is plentiful, the beds are very comfortable, and several bedrooms have a balcony.

- The third floor bedroom's balcony has a spectacular view of the harbor and Mt. Pico.

- Every sidewalk in Horta has a unique design in black and white stone captivating our attention.

- Porto Pim's sandy beach beckons you for a swim.

- The Taberna de Pim guarantees the perfect patio setting for a delicious fish dinner at sunset. It's on the bay and across the way from Genuino's, another tasty restaurant.

- Taca Capitolio serves a mean gin and tonic and garlicky limpids.

- International Cafe's meat on a skewer makes for a nice lunch.

- The gelatos across from the public waterfront park tops off the night.

- The dramatic views across to Pico island changed by the hour.

- The hike around the Caldeira is spectacular, reasonable in length and grade. The trail is ringed with hydrangeas in bloom right now. The entire island is covered with hydrangeas as well as so many colorful wild flowers.

- Sailboats in the harbor are from all around the world. Sailors paint a colorful dedication to their boat and their journey on the jetty.

- Our taxi driver, Paulo Brasil, was a treat!

Casa Matriz is fantastic. It has all essentials of an outstanding place. Location, decor, comfort,

  • 5 of 5

Casa Matriz is simply outstanding. Our diverse family group ( 3 to 80 years of age) found it excellent in all respects. The location enabled us to walk to all Horta attractions. Museums, beaches, shopping, restaurants and churches were all within comfortable distance. We even walked to the Botanical Garden. Some steep streets were not only interesting, they improved our fitness. Views from the house were breathtaking.

The decor of the house is stylish and practical. The layout provided privacy to all three families

and, yet, the gathering places like the kitchen, the living room and the atrium brought us all together and offered great spots for socializing. The house is amazingly sound insulated. I never new if somebody was already in the kitchen preparing a breakfast for the crew.

We found the house very comfortable. Four bathrooms, ample breathing space and plenty of storage in bedrooms provide for a homey feeling. Hot water, heating/cooling was flawless and easily controllable. We also had fun with the charcoal fired barbecue. It is not common in Canada but we made it work and had a one great supper.

And then there was our host Zelda. Helpful with her info on just about anything we might have needed but discrete, not intruding in any way.

Simply, a great experience and we are spontaneously thinking about coming again in the future.

Beautiful Views, Wonderful Host, Delightful Vacati

  • 5 of 5

The accommodation was exactly as described, a big and beautiful house in the center of Horta, the largest town on Faial Island, in the Azores. The house is very comfortable and clean. Beautiful tile work on the walls and floors, marble in many places, modern with a lot of old world charm. The outdoor patio was a comfortable quiet place to relax in the sun and read or eat outside. Our party of ten were all comfortable. The rooms were large with wonderful views of town, the bay, and Pico. We enjoyed being in the town with restaurants and shops within walking distance along the waterfront where yachts from around the world come in during the summer. The painted flags on the concrete walkway along the shore are a treat to view. Taxi and van service is readily available for island tours and conveyance to restaurants and other venues in the evening. The house has a modern kitchen, clothes washing facilities, air conditioning, and five bathrooms. I highly recommend this rental for families and any moderate to large party as a getaway to a charming relaxing Mediterranean locale closer to the US than mainland Europe.

Beautiful house - Convenient, Clean & Comfortable

  • 5 of 5

I really enjoyed my stay here. Zelda is welcoming and kind. Her house has everything a traveler needs to set up a home-away-from-home while visiting these beautiful islands.

There is an amble kitchen, clean bathrooms, inviting beds, great comfortable couches, an airy patio in back and best of all: a couple of balconies with stunning scenic views. There are several floors of pleasant rooms. Scattered throughout the house are ample power plugs (European power –Don’t forget your converter). We were very comfortable.

Zelda was full of answers to our questions about the island both before the trip and during. She responded quickly when we asked and had many suggestions about how to see the things we wanted to see.

This house is in the Matiz area of Horta in which there are many shops and cafes. These are in an easy walking distance of this spacious house. But it may be helpful to know that the entire area is built on a hill. For some the few block walk to the cafes may be too steep and a taxi may be required. Ask Zelda for a recommendation. She knew some of the local taxis drivers. Don’t let the walk stop you. Both the house and the city are gems.

The view from the balconies alone is worth the trip.

A comfortable way to travel. Beautiful house.

  • 5 of 5

A comfortable way to travel. Beautiful house in a great neighborhood in Horta. It is well maintained, well-stocked and has pretty panorama views from its balconies. There is a Kitchen that fit all 10 of us in it and led out onto a back courtyard.

We giggled about our plans on the comfortable livingroom couches, debriefed our adventures in the kitchen, drank wine in the courtyard and I spent part of an afternoon sketching the marvelous scenery from a balcony. It doesn’t get better.

This house is located in the beautiful Matriz neighborhood of Horta, several blocks from the central shopping area. It is a short walk to the shops, library, post office etc. But it is hilly. Either bring your walking shoes or be prepared for taxis (which are plentiful).

Your hostess/owner is amazing, attentive and kind. She answered many questions beforehand so that we felt well prepared for our trip. Zelda, as a native, knows much about the island that she was able to make good suggestions. Such as for restaurants, a great guide and where to get a birthday cake for one of our group whose birthday occurred while we were in Horta.

My only complaint is the rooster that inexplicably cried loudly in the early mornings somewhere nearby.

Dearest rental on our whole trip. Kitchen had absolutely nothing in way of basics, unlike other houses we had booked so HAD to go out immediately to a shop even for a hot drink. Road noise and numerous cockerels at all hours meant we had to use ear plugs every night to get any sleep as 3 out of 5 bedrooms were next to the road. Location is up a steep hill and no pavements meant it was rather hair raising as cars seem to be driven too fast round corners in Horta ! Certainly not recommended for children. Courtyard space was good but in shade most of the day so no where to relax in the sun. Laundry powder provided which was good. Very clean and gave us a late check out which was appreciated.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your great review on our house, we are happy that you found it really clean and that our laundry facilities with the washing and drying machines were utilized by your group of 7. Our accommodation is specialized in receiving many families with young children and the house is absolutely fully stocked for large groups of 10 persons. We are a self-catering accommodation, but we do provide all the cooking necessities for guests to create their own meals with the food items that they purchase. We are sorry that you did not find our coffee machine, kettle, toaster 10 sets of tableware, pots pans, bowls, chopping boards, knives enough to cook with. However if you had notified us on the in -house landline telephone, we would of gladly filled your request. Our guests choose our accommodation mainly because of the central downtown location which is convenient for shopping, access to the marina, markets, cafe, and with only 1 block to the centre of Horta. Thus, having these conveniences tends to bring along a little noise. we apologize if you were inconvenienced. We are happy that you appreciated the early check-in and late check-out because we aim to please our guests if they notify us in advance. you were great guests, we are happy you choose our accommodation to celebrate your anniversary and birthdays. Happy future travels.
