Rustic cottage, lovingly restored
200 year old timber-framed former bakery. Three double rooms and option of a fourth. Sleeps up to 8 adults with extra space for children. One wood-burning and one coal/wood stove. Great for outdoor activities. Large, enclosed garden with extensive meadow to rear.
This cosy, romantic cottage has all modern conveniences as well as beautifully-preserved features including: sandstone archways, farmhouse-style flagstones, original interior and exterior doors, wood and coal-burning stoves, wattle and daub walls with lime plaster etc. Inside it looks like a well loved home thanks to an interesting mixture of antique furniture and wooden floors.
The downstairs Music Room has a piano and a wood/coal stove. This room can double as a 4th bedroom as there is a sofa bed here, with an adjacent bathroom.
On the first floor there are 3 bedrooms (2 very large 30sqm doubles and 1 smaller double). There is also one main family bathroom with a Victorian bath, wet room shower, basin and toilet on the first floor.
There is a very large kitchen with dining table big enough to seat 8 with further dining space for 4 people.
Guests have access to the whole house, garden, swimming pool (summer only) and meadow.

About Paul Brookes
We are Paul and Anna - English and Polish respectively; professional people formerly working as a Microbiologist and Exam officer for the University of Oxford. We have many, varied interests including travel, culture, history, etc. We are passionate about our house and have been restoring it for some years now, by traditional methods (wattle, daub, lime plastering, etc) techniques we knew nothing about prior to purchasing this near-ruin as it formerly was. Most of the work we did ourselves and are proud of the fact that the majority of the interior is structurally the same as it was when first built in 1808. We love nature and have an especially keen interest and knowledge of birds. Other hobbies include gardening, trekking in mountains, skiing, photography, good food and good wine amongst good company.
Paul Brookes purchased this Cottage in 2008
Why Paul Brookes chose Lower Silesian Voivodeship
When we first decided we wanted a house in Poland, we didn't know it would take so long to find the house of our dreams. Having viewed and inspected countless properties over a 3 year period, we were beginning to think that we would never find exactly what we wanted - and the physical and emotional cost of spending all of our free time and holidays in such pursuit was beginning to take its toll. After perhaps the 60th or 70th house, we found this. What you see in the photos bears hardly any resemblance at all to the shambling, decrepit ruin you see in the photos - decades of neglect and disasterous 'home improvements' had left deep scars. But beneath all this, we knew the house had a special charm waiting to be unleashed. Walking into what is now the Music Room, the rotting wallpaper peeled off easily to reveal the astonishing timber construction beneath. Similarly, we knew that the white plastic paint which covered the ceiling here covered an extraordinary series of massive wooden beams (I spent 8-10 hours a day for 7 days just to remove the plastic). Houses like this one are living history. Our first task really was to remove practically all traces of modern construction to take the house back to its original core and refresh and repair using complementary methods. I think I can say that we have largely achieved our aims.

Großartige 2 Wochen
Ganz tolles altes Haus!
Beautiful house and relaxing spot!
As a group of friends visiting from Berlin, we had a fantastic time in Baker's Cottage! Paul was a gracious host (even when we got lost on the way there) and organised a canoeing trip for us which was really good value.
The house is beautifully decorated and has everything you need. Would throughly recommend staying here.
Lovely stay among lush green surroundings, in a beautifully restored, very spacious house
We had a truly wonderful stay in this beautiful farmhouse from 1808! The house has been lovingly restored by its super friendly owners and has retained a lot of its original features. Gorgeous wood- and stonework is complimented by the tasteful furniture, which gives the house a distinctive English feel. The atmospheric rooms and bathrooms are very light and clean and the kitchen is well equipped. The windows look out on the sun terrace and large sloping garden with its fruit trees and bee garden. A stroll up the old volcano at the back of the garden provides sweeping views all the way to the snow capped Carpathian mountains! We loved discovering the surroundings with its old towns, beautiful nature, medieval castles and renaissance palaces. We even went swimming at one of the palaces. The hosts know the district very well and provided us with lots of information about what to see during our stay. Paul, who is a skilled bird watcher, pointed out many of the wild and rare bird species to us. We warmly recommend this place to all who enjoy peaceful, green country retreats with the perfect mix of seclusion and interesting excursions.
The best preserved old farmhouse in a tranquil village.
This is probably the best preserved old farmhouse we (4 adults, 2 children) have ever seen in Poland, set in a beautiful valley in a land of extincted volcanoes. In fact, the volcanoes are so closeby, there is one at the top of the garden and a further 2 within the woods a short walk away. There is an even bigger volcano about 5km away (I can't remember the name) which can be reached from the house on feet. We were very happy that we could walk through the garden and meadow to the landscape park behind the house and watch the Karkonosze Mountains in the distance, leaving our cars behind. The children loved it! Paul and Anna were fantastic hojsts and gave us very detailed information about the area, including maps and a folder about what to see and do during our stay. The house itself is very cosy and clean in a rustic style (the reality is much better than the photos) and we particularly loved the piano in the music room downstairs where we would spend our evenings playing music, singing and just relaxing by a wonderful fireplace. We will come back but for much longer next time!
Einfach entspannen, einfach grandios!
Wunderbares Haus in wunderbarer Umgebung.
Immer wieder gerne!
Thank you Michael. It's always a pleasure to host guests like you with a keen interest in the house and the area. I like our guests to make the most of their valuable and hard-earned vacation time.
Lower Silesia is one of the most attractive regions of Poland. This region boasts the highest concentration of palaces and castles of any similar-sized region in Europe, most of which have largely been undiscovered by mass tourism. (Within 3 km of the house incidentally, there are 2 palaces and 1 castle.) The mountains draw in those seeking an escape from the tumult of the city, as well as peace and quiet, in a land of high ridges and plains.(Though they can be seen on most days from the house, they can be reached in a 30 minutes drive.) Numerous foot and bicycle trails lead through the most attractive areas of Lower Silesia (there is a bike trail in front of the house and a marked walking route just behind.) A kayaking trip along the wide and languorous rivers through the region is sure to provide an unforgettable experience. The closest spot is just 4km away on the beautiful river Bobr where fishermen can be seen wading into the water to enjoy a spot of fly fishing for trout, etc. For those who prefer the challenges of extreme sport, numerous climbing trails await. And in winter there are superbly prepared ski runs. Lovers of horseback riding will find open space, forest trails, picturesque valleys and rolling hillsides (nearest horseback riding is found 8km away). Many visitors are attracted by the Karkonosze Mountains, one of the most valued recreational and leisure areas in Poland.
