Beautiful stone village house, close to the sea, with private pool, sleeps 6

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,130 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 1 - 7 nights

About the property

Accommodates up to 6 people, with private heated pool. Close to La Rochelle.

Our house is situated in the small village of St.Pierre d'Amilly, in the Charente Maritime region - right on the border of the beautiful Marais region, and just 40 km inland from La Rochelle (25 mins) and The Ile de Re (35 mins). The building is a traditional converted stone barn, which is over 300 years old, and was once used for the wine pressing for the village. The house was more recently a stained-glass artist's workshop, hence it's name, Atelier JC. With stone walls and oak beams, the house provides comfort and character with modern convenience.

New to 2016, the house which accommodates up to 6 people, will have sole use of a private heated swimming pool. Possibility to extend group size, with an interconnecting gite, to make accommodation suitable for a larger bookings. The house is ideal for a large family requiring a completely private garden and pool, or two families traveling together.

Activities: Discover the Marais by boat from numerous embarcation points (Arcais, Coulon, La Garette, Damvix), or hire a bicycle (Arcais, St Hilaire la Palud) and follow the specially designated routes. Fantastic area for bird watching with a bird sanctuary at St Hilaire la Palud. Numerous golf courses within easy reach, and fishing for inland and off shore enthusiasts. Seaside sports and activies within very easy reach including sailing, kite surfing and surfing (Ile d'Oleron and Ile de Re). Plenty of nearby indoor / outdoor swimming pools with slides and chutes to keep the kids amused. Chatelaillon is a very family focused resort, and is our nearest beach - only 30 mins away. Here you will find a lovely beach with a kids' club - a great place to leave them in safe hands while you look around the markets and enjoy the cafes.

Restaurants and shopping: La Rochelle is full of great places to eat, and seafood is obviously a speciality. The shopping here is also fantastic, from small independent boutiques to larger department stores, all catering to a very style conscious crowd. The small beach at La Rochelle is a lovely spot to relax and unwind. The park is a beautiful area with great play areas for the kids, and a little menagerie with deer, goats, peacocks and donkeys.

The Ile de Re is a beautiful, unspoilt and fiercely protected island, connected to the mainland and La Rochelle by a magnificent 3 km bridge. 'A flat, fragrant, family friendly holiday spot. Just 30km long and 5km wide, it's criss-crossed by an extensive network (100km) of cycle paths which wind through fields full of poppies, pine forests, pretty French villages, past fishing harbours, salt pans and oyster farms. It's also celebrated for its endless sandy beaches backed by powdery dunes. The island feels like the France, or rather the 'seaside' of yesteryear. Strict building regulations have meant that even new properties have to stick to the low-slung whitewashed-with-green-shutters look. However, the chic shops and waterfront restaurants of the fishing villages give it a very French maritime sophistication.

Places of interest: History is ever present in Poitou Charentes. From prehistoric times to the present day, each period has left its mark. Experience Romanesque architecture at its best (eglise Saint-Pierre at Aulnay-de-Saintonge, eglise Saint-Hilaire at Melle). Enjoy sightseeing in towns of art and architecture, and towns of historical interest (Parthenay, Saintes, Poitiers, Talmont, Cognac, Brouage).

There is an excellent restaurant /creperie /bar right on the edge of our village, just a 15 minute walk away. Run by very friendly Belgians, La Ferme Flamande is open every lunchtime and Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. Great plat du jours, galettes and perfect open-fire grilled steaks. Go for just a drink - they serve a wide selection of lovely beers too! Other good local restaurants including at Surgeres (Le Diwan, a very good Moroccan with stunning decor), and La Rochelle (too numerous to mention).

Our Summer Holiday August 2009

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 2 adults and 2 children stayed at La Maison for 2 weeks in August 2009. The property is just perfect, a beautiful gite which far exceeded our expectations. It has everything needed for a comfortable and relaxing stay, is spacious and well equiped and makes a wonderful base for exploring the local area as well as somewhere to sit back and relax.

The instructions and information provided prior to our visit was both clear and very useful and enabled us to stock up at the local supermarket on route. The children took great delight in listening out for the Bread Van every morning, the driver of which was very friendly and helpful.

Mick and Carole couldn't have made us feel more welcome and went out of their way to ensure that we all had a great holiday. They were always happy to answer any questions we had and made some brilliant recommendations of places for us to visit.

There is a great variety of things on offer within easy reach and we spent an enjoyable 2 weeks exploring local towns, visiting the nearby islands, eating in some of the wonderful resturants in La Rochelle, swimming at the local pools and canoeing along the peaceful rivers and canels.

We would highly recommend La Maison to anyone wanting a taste of France and all that the area has to offer and sincerely hope that we are able to return for a second visit soon.

A charming gite in a peaceful, friendly village

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a wonderful family holiday here. The gite is spacious and well equipped, situated in a peaceful, friendly village which is an ideal base to explore the local area. Mick and Carole are very hospitable and provided lots of information to help us enjoy the area. Our favourite days were those exploring the small towns of the Venice Verte, or green Venice, by boat and Poy Du Fou voted the World’s Best Theme Park. There are plenty of things to do and see here and we hope to return one day.

Wonderful holiday

  • 5 of 5

The first week of a truly memorable three and a half weeks in France. A delightful, well laid out and clean cottage - a home from home. Our hosts Carol and Mick were friendly, welcoming and helpful. The surrounding area is rich in places to visit and we highly recommend this cottage as base for a stay in this part of France.

La Maison

  • 5 of 5

We've just returned from a great holiday in La Maison - a wonderful typically French rustic property. The house was spacious and comfy. A great area to explore - always enjoy our visits to La Rochelle. Mick & Carol were so welcoming and helpful. The local Creperie was fantastic - wish we had something as good on our doorstep! Would love to come back again one day!

We have just returned from a great 2 week stay at La Maison

Lovely old building full of character that was immaculately clean when we arrived, lovely comfy beds and sofas

Quiet location but close enough to all tourist areas

We spent many a sunny evening in the garden and the owners Mick and Carol could not have been more welcoming

We hope to return very soon as this really was a lovely holiday in a beautiful area

We rented both properties...fantastic

  • 5 of 5

We were a party of five and rented both the Petit Flat and La Maison. Both properties meet our needs and then some. After flying into Paris and immedietly driving to our villa(s) we were very pleased and delighted with our accomodations. Clean, cozy and loved the garden area. We actually spent most of our time outside in garden area when we were not out sightseeing. The property was well maintained and Mick and Carole were most helpful in suggesting places to see and things to do. Marc even googled an address for us in La Rochelle so that we could find our family house. The restuarant just down the road was the best, we ate there twice. The rural setting was perfect for us to start our trip in France and get a flavor of the countryside, small villages along with larger cities like La Rochelle. The bread being delivered every morning was a treat. We visited La Rochelle three times that week and Isle de Rue. Both were easy 20 minute commutes from our villa. We would highly recommend this property to our friends and family members. A memorable stay for us all.

About Mick and Carole Williams

We bought our house and gites initially as our holiday getaway, but after coming over so often and loving our holidays here, we decided to move permanently and bring our two girls up in the French education system. We haven't looked back (mostly!), and we're sure you'll agree, it's a wonderful place with an abundance of charm. We live in La Rochelle now, just 30 minutes away, and are always on hand during your stay. We look forward to welcoming you to Atelier JC.

Mick and Carole Williams purchased this cottage in 2002

Why Mick and Carole Williams chose Saint-Pierre-d'Amilly

We fell in love with the house and its gites, and we're sure you will too. Traditional Charente Maritime cottage, with exposed stone walls and huge oak beams; with our renovation project complete, we've kept the authenticity and charm of the building, and added modern comforts. In November 2015 we have installed a private heated swimming pool.

We're perfectly situated for exploring this rich and diverse region, and we're surrounded by tranquil countryside. Ideal for walks and bike rides.

What makes this cottage unique

The previous owner was a stained glass artist, and he has left his mark throughout the property.

La Ferme Flamande is a very good Belgian owned restaurant, just 15 minutes walk from the house. Great plat de jours and crêpes, or just go for a beer - being Belgian, they've got plenty of good ones!

We are very fortunate to have our lovely neighbour Christel, just a couple of doors away, who is a professional masseuse (my father swears by her!)

Guestbook comments from the owner

'Le Petit Flat was lovely, very cosy & comfortable. We shall certainly recommend to all our friends.'

'We really enjoyed the flat and found it to be a perfect base for lots of beautiful places. We also enjoyed being able to get a feel for the true French rural life.'
