About Justin Dorsey

We lived in Pagosa for a few years to get away from the hectic pace of life in Dallas, TX. Prior to moving, we had taken many trips up to Pagosa over the years and fell in love with it. It's easy to see why they call it God's Country. Each season has its own beauty. Not to mention all of the fantastic outdoor activities: skiing, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, hunting, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, kayaking, rafting, fishing...shall I go on?

Once my son was born, we decided to head back to Texas to be closer to family. We decided to keep our home in Pagosa and turn it into a retreat for other families to enjoy. My family still goes up to the Pagosa Mountain Retreat about 4-5 times per year. We try to enjoy a stint of each season. We hope you will as well.

Justin Dorsey purchased this house in 2004

Why Justin Dorsey chose Pagosa Springs

We chose to buy a home in Pagosa Springs as it was, and still is, the most beautiful place we have ever seen. Being on top of the Continental Divide as the wildflowers are blooming in July is truly one of the most breath-taking experiences.

Pagosa is the best secret out there. Wolf Creek literally gets the most snow in Colorado each year and offers the best skiing/boarding conditions anywhere in the state. Check out the parking lot next time you are there and you will see a lot of CO plates. People drive from Denver when Wolf Creek gets a big snow. The weather patterns moving moisture up from the Baja into the San Juans creates the best conditions for snowfall. Durango Mountain Resort and Monarch are just a short drive away. The Weminuche Wilderness is the largest in the state and offers prestine forest to explore and numerous opportunities for seeing wildlife. Ten 14ers are within a few hours drive for the peek-bagging enthusiast. The gold medal waters fo the San Juan, Rio Grande, Animas and Piedra Rivers offer the best trout fishing around.

What makes this house unique

We are lucky to be situated right on the San Juan National Forest border. You can walk out the front door and literally be standing in the forest in less than a minute. The Pagosa Mountain Retreat sits across from Dutton Canyon and backs to Martinez Canyon. Snowshoeing and cross country skiing are great activities in the winter and hiking for miles in the summer. Bears, elk, deer, coyotes, turkeys all migrate up and down the canyons. Not unusual at all to see elk and deer in the front yard.

The mountain views off the decks are fantastic. Clear views of the Continental Divide along the San Juans'East Range. The private decks from the upstairs bedrooms are great for drinking coffee and watching the sun rise over the mountains to start a new day of adventure.

Best part is you may see 5 cars go by over a week's time. The neighborhood of Twin Creek Village is less than 5 minutes to everything, but still out where it's so quiet and peaceful. The stars at night on a clear evening go on forever. No sirens or city lights here...

Stay here when you can!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved this property! My husband and I took our 3 children (4, 9, and 18) and a friend of the oldest child and we had the best week! It was so nice to come "home" after a long day of skiing or whatever and have a place that really felt like home. We cooked in at the residence three nights and had everything we needed in the way of utensils and tools. Our children loved the game room as well. It is easy to get to anything you need in town, and the drive to Wolf Creek Ski Area is not bad at all. The home was clean and neat, the beds were comfortable, and it was a great place to kick back and relax on vacation! We loved it and hope that we can return again soon!

Ski & Fun between Wolf Creek and Purg

  • 5 of 5

This cabin was absolutely perfect for our group. Brought my family and invited friends from Denver area for a total of 8. It was cozy, warm and relaxing. We skied both Wolf Creek ~30min away and Purg ~80min on this trip, but also spent a lot of time relaxing, cooking meals, and playing games. Kids loved the huge room downstairs, bunkbeds, etc. The cabin is all set up with great amenities for your stay, which made it easy for us to not worry about much and relax. Lots of great stores and ski huts in town as well. Can't say enough positive things about this cabin. We will come back for a longer stay!

Awesome Time at PMR!

  • 5 of 5

We had never been to Pagosa, but Justin made it very easy to plan and coordinate our trip. He was very helpful with the local ins and outs, and the house was exactly what our family needed. We explored around the canyons near the house, skied at Wolf Creek, and soaked in the hot springs. With 3 kids the gameroom was perfect for them to play and hang out. I rate this property #1 and will definitely be back again next year!

Unfortunate....

  • 2 of 5

We have stayed in a lot of homes through the years and have never written a negative review. This is a nice home in a good location, but... When we arrived there was a huge mound of snow at the end of the driveway-we called Sunetha and they did come clear it out, but why was it not ready when we checked in? The garage was full of mud and my husband spent quite a bit of time sweeping & scraping before we could unload. The light on the stairway was burned out and we had to replace it. There was no TV remote in the living room, so I called Sunetha again. A gentleman came out with another remote that did not work and told us we would just have to stand in front of the Dish box and manually change channels. He also told me it was the owners responsibility-they were simply the "money takers".

I called the owner to let him know and he was nice on the phone, but never heard one thing back from him or Sunetha in the next 7 days! The house was not what I would call clean-the stove top and oven are filthy, there is a carousel in the cabinets that houses appliances that was also very dirty, the dishwasher has a sprung door that is hard to deal with. There was 1 teaspoon in the silverware drawer. The beds were very uncomfortable and the pillows were worn out and flat-our bed had a light blanket that was full of holes. We had 5 adults in our party and no one said they slept well. The bathrooms were fine and there were plenty of towels.

Most of the games downstairs were broken or missing pieces. The outside trash can was completely full of trash when we arrived so we had to just leave our bags in the garage until we put the trash out on Thursday. It's a shame because it is a nice home, but there is no attention to detail. Pagosa is great and we will be back, just not at this home.

fun weekend in Pagosa

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed this property for ski weekend getaway. The house was very comfortable and clean, we loved the big windows in the living area and the wrap around deck. The owner and the management company were very nice and accommodating (we were able to check in a bit early). There were a few problems. The propane tank was empty in the outside grill and this was frustrating when I wanted to grill steaks outside (I should have checked to see if the grill worked before cooking but I didn't so we had to scramble to figure out how to cook the steaks). Also the remote didn't work for the TV ( yes we replaced the batteries to no avail, I had to manually change the channel on the directv receiver, I know this is a petty complaint but mostly I'm putting it in so the owner knows.) Overall we were pleased and would recommend this property.
