Our private cottage, sitting on five acres, offers all of the comforts of home, with a small stream meandering through the property and surrounded by beautiful hills, trees and wildlife. After spending your days seeing all of the sights that the Black Hills have to offer, you will enjoy returning to this tranquil setting and relaxing on the patio or the front porch. Our property was recently chosen as part of an Arctic Cat promotional DVD and brochure.

About Wolfgang & Kathleen Schmidt

We have lived and worked in the Black Hills for over 35 years, where we have built our own home as well as two vacation homes--a log cabin and our new cottage. Each place sits on its own five acre parcel. Wolfgang has constructed many trails and bridges in the Black Hills (eight on the Mickelson Trail) while he contracted with the State of South Dakota and the U.S. Forest Service. There is a link on our personal website titled "Wolfgang's Trails" where you can view a slideshow of the projects Wolfgang has done.

Why Wolfgang & Kathleen Schmidt chose Black Hills

We chose the beautiful Nemo area after spending many hours looking for an ideal place to live in the Black Hills--it reminds Wolfgang of the Black Forest in Germany. We love the privacy in Vanocker Canyon as well as the convenience to everything in the Black Hills.

What makes this cottage unique

Our properties are centrally located to all attractions--northern and southern hills as well as the major cities. You will enjoy the solitude of being bordered by National Forest land as well as all of the wildlife that lives on and around our property. Vanocker Canyon area was also chosen by Game, Fish & Parks to bring in elk to this area. The unique benefit of choosing either our log cabin or new cottage is the privacy--each place sits on its own five acres and there are no other cabins around; we are not within a development.

Please don't forget to view the slideshow on the 'Home' page of our website, which can be accessed if you scroll down about 5-6 lines where it says 'Links to More Information: Click Here - Little Elk Cabin & Cottage'.

Beautiful Cottage in the Woods!

  • 5 of 5

We booked this beautiful cottage on our way to Yellowstone. It met all of our expectations and then some! Our next trip to the Black Hills will definitely include staying here again, but for a longer time. The cottage is central to every place we planned to visit and driving thru beautiful scenery to and from every attraction made it special. The wildlife around the cottage was entertaining to watch, and the owners were helpful with any questions we had during our stay. You will be glad you booked this nice rental--we were!

Great Secluded Location and Comfortable Cottage

  • 5 of 5

The property is located on a well kept gravel road approximately one-quarter mile off of the main paved road. The cottage is clean and has all the modern conveniences that we could want. The property is lovely with deer out front in the evenings and with an occasional group of turkeys wondering through. You will have to take time to travel to most of the tourist sites with Hill City almost an hour away. Sturgis is 20 minutes to the north. However, the rides are worth it with beautiful scenery along the way. There is a fairly large concrete patio out back which we didn't use nearly enough, but in the mornings it was a wonderful place to read a book and have coffee. Dalton Lake Road is actually a nice place to take an evening or morning walk, and if you drive to its end, there is actually a very nice trail that follows a good sized stream. Loved the cottage, location, and experience.

A great place

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is a very cozy and inviting place to stay. Plus it is very well-maintained. The location is great and the added plus of wildlife walking through the pasture just added to the peaceful setting.

Family Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Our family included Little Elk Cottage in part of our trip to the Black Hills as a quiet getaway after a few days of sight seeing. It was absolutely wonderful. It was quiet, the trails were awesome, the wildlife was fun to see each day, it was close to destinations like Sturgis, Deadwood and Lead, and the cottage is so homey. So nice to enjoy our family in the comfort of a cottage rather than a hotel room. We hope to come back to relax and include more hiking in the future.

Soothing Black Hills retreat

  • 5 of 5

The house is just as advertised -- charming, immaculate and well cared for. We were treated to a parade of wild turkeys, and prancing deer in the evening, and sometimes the morning. The house is spacious and very comfortable. Beware that there is no place to eat within a 30 minute drive -- though there is a small store in Nemo; and there is nothing in the house other than salt & pepper. As suggested pick up food in Rapid City or Sturgis. We love our privacy and enjoyed the relaxation and calm of the beautiful surroundings. Would certainly return if we get back to this part of the country again.

Owner's Response: We are happy you enjoyed your stay at our cottage and appreciate your kind comments. Yes, we are about a 30-minute drive from fine dining, however, there are several places to eat LESS than 30 minutes away from our cottage. As our listing states, we have a fully furnished kitchen, however, we do not leave opened food left by our previous guests. The reason is detailed on our VRBO listing. Thanks again for choosing our cottage for your visit to the Black Hills!

Our private cottage is surrounded by the Black Hills National Forest and abundant wildlife. We are within three miles of Dalton Lake and superb hiking in Little Elk Canyon. The Custer Expedition camped near our property in 1872 and glory holes from early settlers can be found as you hike the area surrounding the cottage. Wolfgang has constructed many hiking trails in the Black Hills as well as 16 bridges in various locations. We are very familiar with areas to hike and bicycle to help you plan your vacation. Also, our website has many more photos and detailed information. We also have a log cabin with rates that begin at $165/night on our property. Each place is a very unique spot to stay.
