Our private cottage, sitting on five acres, offers all of the comforts of home, with a small stream meandering through the property and surrounded by beautiful hills, trees and wildlife. After spending your days seeing all of the sights that the Black Hills have to offer, you will enjoy returning to this tranquil setting and relaxing on the patio or the front porch. About Wolfgang & Kathleen Schmidt
We have lived and worked in the Black Hills for over 35 years, where we have built our own home as well as two vacation homes--a log cabin and our new cottage. Each place sits on its own five acre parcel. Wolfgang has constructed many trails and bridges in the Black Hills (eight on the Mickelson Trail) while he contracted with the State of South Dakota and the U.S. Forest Service. .
Wolfgang & Kathleen Schmidt purchased this Cottage in 2004
Why Wolfgang & Kathleen Schmidt chose Nemo
We chose the beautiful Nemo area after spending many hours looking for an ideal place to live in the Black Hills--it reminds Wolfgang of the Black Forest in Germany. We love the privacy in Vanocker Canyon as well as the convenience to everything in the Black Hills.
What makes this Cottage unique
Our properties are centrally located to all attractions--northern and southern hills as well as the major cities. You will enjoy the solitude of being bordered by National Forest land as well as all of the wildlife that lives on and around our property. Vanocker Canyon area was also chosen by Game, Fish & Parks to bring in elk to this area. The unique benefit of choosing either our log cabin or new cottage is the privacy--each place sits on its own five acres and there are no other cabins around; we are not within a development.

A Little Piece of Heaven!!
This cottage was a true paradise to stay in! The home itself is beautifully built and decorated, spacious and comfortable. The mattresses on the bed were comfortable to sleep on. The concrete patio in the back is perfect for grilling and socializing. The front porch provides a heavenly view!! We spent hours one afternoon just listening to the birds and watching the deer, turkey (and even a little marmot) feeding in the large and luscious meadow that spreads out before you. The owners are awesome people! Wolfgang has left his mark all over the Black Hills by the trails, fences and bridges he's built. They have thought of every comfort their guests would need. This property is private and quiet and a great place to come to if you want to get away from it all....yet still close to things to do in the Black Hills. We will definitely be back....maybe in the autumn when the birch and aspen trees surrounding the property have their gold on! A real pleasure to stay here!
A piece of heaven in the canyon
From the moment we saw this cottage from the road we knew it was the right place for us. We spent a week fishing and hiking while our friends rode their motorcycle to all the beautiful places the Black Hills had to offer. We had everything we needed from pots and pans to a BBQ grill. The everyday items (toilet paper, paper towels, dishwashing soap and foil) were provided along with great appliances and comfortable beds. You will see wildlife everyday and watch them feed in the meadow. We had no complaints. If you are looking for a place to get away and relax this is it.
Beautiful cottage in the hills
Lovely property with an off the beaten path, non-touristy feel. This cottage was very comfortable for our family of 4. We particularly enjoyed the visiting wildlife daily and the brilliance of the night sky. Owners were very responsive to requests without being intrusive.
Peaceful and Perfect
Wolfgang and Kathleen were wonderful hosts. They made sure we arrived safely and checked in to ensure things were going well. We were fortunate to have been able to enjoy this little piece of heaven. I highly recommend staying at the Little Elk Cottage.
My wife and I just spent a week at the cabin and it was perfect from beginning to end. This is the second time we have been there in two years and I guess that tells the story. We will be looking forward to returning next year.
Location and cabin were perfect
If you looking for a home base to experience the Black Hills, look no further.
Nearby Dalton Lake is stocked with trout every Spring. It is a great spot to fish or take a leasurely hike in adjacent Little Elk Canyon. Wonderland Cave is just up the road and is one of the most beautiful crystal caves in the Black Hills. They have hourly tours, as well as a nice gift shop, where you will be sure to find a souvenir to take home as a reminder of your visit to this area.
