This charming historic cottage is attached to our home and is our year round guest house. It sits in a quiet cove with access to the 5 larger lakes around it. It is 5 miles to the town of Millinocket and is easy to get to. It's a wonderful place for water activities or just relaxing by the water. It's also a great jumping off point for the Katahdin region including Baxter State Park. We have a paddle boat, two canoes, and two kayaks available. Bird watch, leaf peep, moose watch, white water raft, hike, kayak, swim, fish, x-country ski ,snow shoe, ATV, snowmobile or just relax and enjoy the view. We are close to a network of trails. Just leave the house and hit the trails.

Perfect historical cottage on a beautiful lake.

  • 5 of 5

This place is ideal for a visit to The Golden Road, Baxter State Park, and Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. It's clean and comfortable with all amenities. Faye and Don, the owners and hosts are very generous and warm people, who are happy to take you for a ride on the lakes in their boat, or leave you to discover the place for yourself. Nice kitchen, big t.v. with Dish Network and many movie channels. Air conditioning in three rooms, fans, and the naturally cool air will keep you comfortable in summer. The lakes are gorgeous and the hosts provide free use of canoes, kayaks, or a pedal boat to get around. Just perfect.

The pictures do not do the cottage justice. We are a family of 4 with 2 adult sized teens, and traveling with another young adult friend. We have rented a different cabin every summer via VRBO or Homeaway for the last 15 years, all over the East Coast. This has been my favorite. The location was convenient to Baxter State Park, which was our plan. The cottage had everything we needed, the beds and linens were comfortable, and everything was clean and in working order. The decor is original and comforting in a "grandma's house" kind of way. The lake, view, and backyard are gorgeous. When I booked, I was concerned that the wicker furniture in the LR would not be comfortable. I was completely wrong. It was very comfortable, particularly after hiking Mount Katahdin. When we could barely walk the next day, it was the perfect place to relax, along with enjoy sitting by the lake and playing with the kayaks. The boys had a great time fishing and caught some big ones. Faye and Don were positively delightful. We have never socialized with our hosts in the past as we prefer privacy, but we had a lovely evening visiting by the lake and my son and Don spent hours jamming on their guitars. They are welcoming, very easy to work with, but respectful of privacy. I know if we had wanted more anonymity, that would have been fine too. There is only one bathroom, which is on the first floor. I imagine this could be an issue if you were potty-training a little one, or you have an overactive bladder. The teens grumbled about the lack of dishwasher. Their parents had no sympathy, and enjoyed a cocktail while they cleaned. The house is outside Millinocket, which has groceries and gas, but is otherwise just limping along now that the paper mill has closed. I would happily spend every summer here if I could.

On Golden Pond

  • 5 of 5

I felt as if we were thrown into the movie set of On Golden Pond. Our cottage stay was perfect and the hosts were so helpful. We enjoyed a hike at Baxter State Park, a drive and picnic along Golden Road, kayak and canoe rides on the lake, grilling and eating by the lake, sitting by the fire in the fire pit by the lake and just relaxing and reading. We also enjoyed hearing and seeing the loons each evening. I recommend this place for a relaxing vacation for nature lovers.

A real gem

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was just as pictured. It was very comfortable. The kitchen was fully stocked with utensils, cookware and everything we'd need...especially coffee! The owners were great and gave us good tips about exploring the area. It's close enough to town to dine there if you don't want to cook and close to Baxter Park and the Golden rd. We kayaked on the lakes behind the cottage one day, it was beautiful! It was a bit windy but there are so many little islands it was easy to stay put of the wind and waves. The yard is tranquil overlooking the lake with a nice fire pit and picnic table. This is a great jumping off place and a great place to bring everything you need and park the car for a week. We wish we could've stayed longer. A real gem.

Quite Place

  • 5 of 5

The description was very accurate. The cottage was even bigger than we thought (maybe because we are a family with only one small child), clean and maintained. The owners are very pleasant and ready to answer your questions. We enjoyed the time spent there because we live in very built-up and densely populated area without any nature so close to us as in this place or probably anywhere in Maine. You can walk around and see the lakes from different places, kayak, or visit nearby Baxter State Park though the best views of Katahdin are from the Golden Road; we drove only to Abol Bridge. I would recommend this property to anyone seeking an escape from bustle of a city.

We had a wonderful time in this quaint cottage on the shore of a lake. The owners were incredibly hospitable and friendly in every way possible, but still give you plenty of space to do your own thing. It was our base camp as we explored Baxter State Park.

We would definitely return in future seasons.
