Union Pier Cottage Rental Photos and Description

3 bedrooms, single bathroom, sleeps 8 with open air family shower

This beach front cottage offers the beautiful sunsets of the summer and the clean sandy beaches of Western Lake Michigan. Our 3 bedroom 900 square foot cottage has been the owners residence for the past 15 years and 2008 is the first year offered to our guests. Situated on 5/8 of an acre this heavily shaded property offers open space of lawn to play baseball or croquet, or to just sit on the front deck, drink a cold lemonade and enjoy the warm lakefront breeze. The stairs to the beach are fifty feet away where you can situate yourself on the expansive private beach area (patrolled on weekends to keep strangers off). The private beach is a beach assn. beach shared by Gordon Beach families. We are a Friday changeover day but do not advertise this because the search engine provided by HomeAway cannot offer flexability for your search. Also the search engine is so bad that most of the homes that were returned by my own personal search to see if my cottage appeared returned searches of home that were located at Notre Dame University almost 40 miles to the beach.

About John R

We currently live ,in Chicago and Union Pier is a great short trip to escape all of the weekend festivals, and leave the hustle and the bustle behind. We spend all day at the beach building sand castles and sand sculptures and getting knocked down in the water by the strong waves when the wind is blowing.

Why John R chose Southwest Michigan

Location, location, location. This was the closest that I could get to the beach with out purchasing a lakefront property. Now lakefront properties are nearly unattainable and the rental rates on most are $3000 per night but much larger than our modest, comfortable cottage. We couldn't be happier listening to the waves from the Lake all night with the windows open and able to walk out to the beach every morning.

What makes this cottage unique

I had no idea how important access to a deeded private beach would be as I purchased the cottage in the middle of January. If you want to have a piece of privacy then this is your rental. We are strategically located at the public beach access with access to our private beach. There are many rentals in the Union Pier area but most advertise steps to the beach is one long half mile steps. You can leave all of your beach chairs and umbrellas and stuff at the beach, and come upstairs to have a lunch or take a quick nap. there is no need to move all of your beach chairs until either sunset or after you enjoy your beach side campfire and show your children how to make s'mores.

We had a terrific week's stay at the Union Pier Cottage. The grounds were beautiful, the cottage was very clean and in great shape, the stairs to the beach were a few yards away! It was hot the week we stayed - in the 90's - but the breeze off the lake and the ceiling fans kept it comfortable. John was very helpful, and provided us with beach chairs and a beach umbrella, as well as firewood, tinder, and matches for a bonfire at the beach. The kitchen was well stocked with everything from pots and pans to saran wrap and aluminum foil. All we needed to bring was food! The loft was a really neat space - and the washer and dryer in the closet was really helpful! There was a gas grill and a charcoal grill and we grilled almost every night. The sunsets were beautiful. I would recommend this property very highly! We absolutely loved it.

A gift!

That is what we are calling this family vacation that wouldn't have happened if it weren't for incredible owner John. He saved our trip that had been booked & planned since early spring at a different vacation rental down the road that, at last minute, fell apart. With barely a week before the intended trip was to take place I was scrambling to find anything available. Nearly impossible in a desirable, lake front area that books well in advance & majority that only allow rentals by the week, not the 3 days we had scheduled. I plead my case explaining how devastated we all were, especially the three young ones, but knowing, more likely than not, no one would deviate from the minimum 7day rental. Kind, accommodating owner John felt terribly about our predicament & graciously let us book our 3 days! With tears of joy & gratitude I excitedly passed the wonderful news along.Then...we arrive & everything couldn't have been more perfect. The house is beautiful, tastefully decorated & well-equipped.The lake views are fantastic! And they are plentiful both indoors and out. Location absolutely can not be beat. Just a few steps& you are at top of stairs to the beach-your own private neighborhood beach to the left, small public beach to the right. Heavenly, silky soft sand. Mesmerizing turquoise water. We spent majority of our time either swimming, sunning or walking along the shore & couldn't have been happier. It was so convenient to quickly run back to the house if we forgot anything or just needed to freshen up a beverage. The few times we did stray from our perfect spot was to run down the road in either direction. North to Sawyer-great antiques mall. Further on to Stevensville.A quick jaunt south down to New Buffalo. Great corner general store & pharmacy for anything u may have forgotten-sunscreen, beach toys, even wine. Then to Barney's grocery/wine & spirits with their sizable selection & generous deli area, meat counter. Or, without hopping in a car, we enjoyed being able to walk down the street to Union Pier Grocery one time, Nani's for muffins another. After discovering this beautiful area few years back, we have stayed in several other vacation rentals but John's place by far is our fav'!We have never been that close to the water with those views,so perfectly located to anything could possibly need or want to do. In fact, love it so much already making plans to return shortly. It was a beautiful vacation. Thank you so very much, John for this beautiful gift.

great beach cottage

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I rented this cottage for a week. Another couple came and stayed for a few days. We also took our two small dogs. This is a great place to relax and enjoy the beach. You are literally steps from private beach. It is clean, functional, vey well kept. Has two great decks. You can watch the sunset from the front one. Has a large yard for the dogs. It is very cute inside and comfortable. Although the bedrooms downstairs are on the small side. Upstairs is very airy and has a lot of space. We cooked breakfast and used the grill and everything was in working order. Great air conditioning too as it was quite hot a few days we were there. The owner is very nice. You really cannot beat the location if you love the beach-two entrances to beach just steps away. Beach is beautiful too-very clean. Lots of families. Cottage is well equipped for the most part. Would definitely go back-maybe try it for fall winetasting trip. This is good for 2 couples or small family and I really appreciate the pet friendliness. Thanks John.

Great location, great owner !

Had agreat time. Cottage clean and a fantastic location as promised. Cottage is first thing you see at the top of the steps coming back from the beatiful private beach. Watch the sunsets from the front porch, living room or back deck, you choose ! Huge side yard, worked out great for the dog. Everything you need is there as promised.

Owner couldn't be more helpfull .

I forgot my Ipod in the pocket of one of the Tommy Bahama beach chairs that he provides, he not only went to the cottage to check for it when we called, he brought it to me in Chicago !! John, THANKS AGAIN ! ! !

We enjoyed our stay and the beach was fabulous! In years past we packed up and drove to different beaches then walked lugging our need to go anywhere else once you are at this cottage! We walked on the beach one night and enjoyed the stars above and the far off lightening and rolling thunder over the lake. When we got back to the cottage there were 3 deer in the flower garden that didn't seem to mind as we walked by.

The major conveniences:the place is very clean, has good clean tap water to drink, plenty of hot water for our clan of 6 (which included 3 teens), very efficient air-conditioning, WiFi, LOCATION!LOCATION!LOCATION! Truly just steps to the beach! Love it!

Personal suggestions include:

* pantry storage and somewhere for personal items in the bathroom.

* the biggest thing for us would be another sleeping area...maybe a daybed upstairs? We did have a party of 6 including 3 teenagers. Being close for a week wasn't bad.

We had a great time and would consider returning. There is so much in the area we didn't get to do. And only 1-1/2 hrs from Chicago. We will surely recommend this cottage to anyone inquiring. John was an attentive host and even brought firewood so we could enjoy a campfire on the beach! Thanks for the personal attention.

Charming cottage with great finished upstairs. Very clean and has been updated. Just a skip to the public beach access which is connected to the private beach. Really great to have internet access and free long distance on house phone. Bad reception for AT&T cell phone due to the lake.

Only suggestion is perhaps put in a closet rod or two in the upstairs bedroom. Or perhaps a portable coat rack where one can hang up clothes. Another dresser in the front bedroom would be great also.

John was a wonderful host and is only a phone call away if you need him.

If you have stayed in Union Pier before, we are located at the public beach access! There are 2 small cottages between us and the beach. It is all about the beach in Union Pier. The beaches never close on this side of the Lake because of pollution or high bacteria count. Many Chicagoans make their way to Union Pier to train for The Chicago Triathlon, where it is easy to swim a mile without bumping into anyone and bike one of the designated bike routes through Three Oaks and cycle 25 miles without navigating around automobiles or roller bladers...Additionally it is worth making the drive to Warren Dunes State Park and Mt Baldy to view some of the nicest and largest sand dunes in the United States.
