This beach front cottage offers the beautiful sunsets of the summer and the clean sandy beaches of Western Lake Michigan. Our 3 bedroom 900 square foot cottage has been the owners residence for the past 15 years and 2008 is the first year offered to our guests. Situated on 5/8 of an acre this heavily shaded property offers open space of lawn to play baseball or croquet, or to just sit on the front deck, drink a cold lemonade and enjoy the warm lakefront breeze. The stairs to the beach are fifty feet away where you can situate yourself on the expansive private beach area (patrolled on weekends to keep strangers off). The private beach is a beach assn. beach shared by Gordon Beach families.
We currently live ,in Chicago and Union Pier is a great short trip to escape all of the weekend festivals, and leave the hustle and the bustle behind. We spend all day at the beach building sand castles and sand sculptures and getting knocked down in the water by the strong waves when the wind is blowing.
Location, location, location. This was the closest that I could get to the beach with out purchasing a lakefront property. Now lakefront properties are nearly unattainable and the rental rates on most are $3000 per night but much larger than our modest, comfortable cottage. We couldn't be happier listening to the waves from the Lake all night with the windows open and able to walk out to the beach every morning.
I had no idea how important access to a deeded private beach would be as I purchased the cottage in the middle of January. If you want to have a piece of privacy then this is your rental. We are strategically located at the public beach access with access to our private beach. There are many rentals in the Union Pier area but most advertise steps to the beach is one long half mile steps. You can leave all of your beach chairs and umbrellas and stuff at the beach, and come upstairs to have a lunch or take a quick nap. there is no need to move all of your beach chairs until either sunset or after you enjoy your beach side campfire and show your children how to make s'mores.
We had a terrific week's stay at the Union Pier Cottage. The grounds were beautiful, the cottage was very clean and in great shape, the stairs to the beach were a few yards away! It was hot the week we stayed - in the 90's - but the breeze off the lake and the ceiling fans kept it comfortable. John was very helpful, and provided us with beach chairs and a beach umbrella, as well as firewood, tinder, and matches for a bonfire at the beach. The kitchen was well stocked with everything from pots and pans to saran wrap and aluminum foil. All we needed to bring was food! The loft was a really neat space - and the washer and dryer in the closet was really helpful! There was a gas grill and a charcoal grill and we grilled almost every night. The sunsets were beautiful. I would recommend this property very highly! We absolutely loved it.
Had agreat time. Cottage clean and a fantastic location as promised. Cottage is first thing you see at the top of the steps coming back from the beatiful private beach. Watch the sunsets from the front porch, living room or back deck, you choose ! Huge side yard, worked out great for the dog. Everything you need is there as promised.
Owner couldn't be more helpfull .
I forgot my Ipod in the pocket of one of the Tommy Bahama beach chairs that he provides, he not only went to the cottage to check for it when we called, he brought it to me in Chicago !! John, THANKS AGAIN ! ! !
We enjoyed our stay and the beach was fabulous! In years past we packed up and drove to different beaches then walked lugging our junk...no need to go anywhere else once you are at this cottage! We walked on the beach one night and enjoyed the stars above and the far off lightening and rolling thunder over the lake. When we got back to the cottage there were 3 deer in the flower garden that didn't seem to mind as we walked by.
The major conveniences:the place is very clean, has good clean tap water to drink, plenty of hot water for our clan of 6 (which included 3 teens), very efficient air-conditioning, WiFi, LOCATION!LOCATION!LOCATION! Truly just steps to the beach! Love it!
Personal suggestions include:
* pantry storage and somewhere for personal items in the bathroom.
* the biggest thing for us would be another sleeping area...maybe a daybed upstairs? We did have a party of 6 including 3 teenagers. Being close for a week wasn't bad.
We had a great time and would consider returning. There is so much in the area we didn't get to do. And only 1-1/2 hrs from Chicago. We will surely recommend this cottage to anyone inquiring. John was an attentive host and even brought firewood so we could enjoy a campfire on the beach! Thanks for the personal attention.

Charming cottage with great finished upstairs. Very clean and has been updated. Just a skip to the public beach access which is connected to the private beach. Really great to have internet access and free long distance on house phone. Bad reception for AT&T cell phone due to the lake.
Only suggestion is perhaps put in a closet rod or two in the upstairs bedroom. Or perhaps a portable coat rack where one can hang up clothes. Another dresser in the front bedroom would be great also.
John was a wonderful host and is only a phone call away if you need him.
My family and I rented the cottage for a week. On Labor Day we invited some others in our family for a picnic. We truly enjoyed the atmosphere. The treed area with the lake steps away. Of course Lake Michagan is wonderful. The sand is soft with many beautiful stones/shells to gather. The owner is most courteous and helpful and everything he has written about the cottage is true. All you need to bring are your personal items, clothes, and food. You can take long walks on the beach, or in the neighborhoods (which are awesome!) We rode the bikes to New Buffalo Harbor and Public beach and the shopping area (3 1/2 mi.) The shops in New Buffalo are unique and done tastefully. There are many restaurants to choose from drive-up, to gourmet. The bike ride is just about car-free in the lakefront area. If you want to relax, read books, watch the beautiful sunsets, and meet friendly people this is for you. The cottage is decorated with comfortable furniture. The mattresses were excellant. The only thing that I would add is I would put up curtains or blinds in the kitchen and I would put some sort of open shelf in the bathroom for renters to set their toiletries.
This was our third time renting the cottage because it's an awesome place to be beach bums and still have all the amenities of home -- a full kitchen, central air, wi-fi, washer/dryer, cable TV, etc. that is all very clean and well kept.
The cottage is literally a stone's throw from sand dunes and shoreline, so it's easy to get to the private beach and easy to come back to when we're done. The owner is always updating/changing/adding things to improve our time here, and is quick to accommodate anything we need.
You can read, nap, or relax indoors or out. If you want some exercise besides beach-type fun, you can walk, jog, or bicycle (three are provided) around the area which is very friendly to non-automobiles. The yard is big enough for outdoor/yard games, and the hammock give a nice vantage point if you just want to watch.
There are plenty of restaurants to choose from, some walking distance and most just a short drive away. This is Michigan's wine country, so there are plenty of wine tasting rooms and wineries to tour also.
For us, staying here is a week of pure, enjoyable, summer R & R.
Hmmmmm. Wonder what it would be like in the fall....
If you have stayed in Union Pier before, we are located at the public beach access! There are 2 small cottages between us and the beach. It is all about the beach in Union Pier. The beaches never close on this side of the Lake because of pollution or high bacteria count. Many Chicagoans make their way to Union Pier to train for The Chicago Triathlon, where it is easy to swim a mile without bumping into anyone and bike one of the designated bike routes through Three Oaks and cycle 25 miles without navigating around automobiles or roller bladers...Additionally it is worth making the drive to Warren Dunes State Park and Mt Baldy to view some of the nicest and largest sand dunes in the United States.
