If you are looking for a peaceful retreat with incredible water and nature landscapes, you have found it. This farmhouse cottage is located on a private, historic family estate, and offers acres of open land with views of the Long Island Sound and the mouth of the Connecticut River. There is access to a private beach where you will often be the only people you can see. There are plenty of things to do in the Old Lyme area, with unique shops and art galleries.
Peaceful retreat: This secluded second story cottage, located on a private lane, rests in a former barnyard with fantastic views of Long Island Sound, the mouth of the Conn. River, Saybrook lighthouses, marshes and coves teeming with birds (bird sanctuary). The space below is a laundry room, storage and carport. It is a short walk from Udder Heaven to a secluded beach half a mile away, open fields with walking, hiking and run paths are just the beginning of this quiet private place. This is a unique and special place to bird watch, especially osprey with many nest on the estate. A huge deck for entertaining, a covered carport and laundry facility are included. It's name is 'Udder Heaven' because it once housed the dairy, when the farm was active.
Cottage details: The cottage is on the second floor, requiring climbing stairs. Dogs are welcome, $75 per week cleaning fee per dog is required. We ask smokers to use the deck just outside the living room. Cleaning services can be arranged. Please bring your own linens (sheets) and towels, there are 2 twin beds and one queen bed, plus a convertible couch (double). Pillows and blankets are supplied. The kitchen is fully equipped, and the cottage has ceiling fans and is air conditioned. Because there is no heat, the cottage is closed during winter. Utilities are part of the rent, and local phone service is provided. The following is also included with rental of Udder Heaven: Samsung flat screen 32' HDTV, DVD/VCR player, internet services. The normal rental period is from 4:00 PM on Saturday to 10:00 AM Saturday, so we can squeeze in a thorough cleaning.
Old Lyme environs: Old Lyme is a central location for many activities. Near the cottage are small rivers and coves convenient for kayaking and sailing. The Mystic Seaport is but an hour away, as are Gillette's Castle, the Essex Steam Train (and boat ride), Devil's Hopyard Park, the Florence Griswold Art Museum, the Godspeed Opera House for summer shows, Chamard Vineyard, golf and fine dining (The Griswold Inn in Essex) and the best pizza, ice cream, and grinder shops in New England. Peace and quiet are the watchwords on this private lane. A complete visitors handbook is available in the cottage with directions to all the attractions and facilities nearby.
I and two brothers own the property, one of whom lives next door. The property has been in the family for literally centuries, and relatives own the surrounding land. Generations have lived or visited here, enjoyed the uniqueness, the beach, the marshes and the fields.
Sloane Griswold purchased this cottage in 1640
This dwelling once was part of a working farm, where the dairy functions were carried out. Thus the name Udder Heaven arose. It sits in the old barnyard, building mainly used for storage and equipment. Udder Heaven is a single unit on the second floor, storage, car port and laundry are on the first floor.
Access to the marshes, Long Island Sound, rivers and fields are the primary attraction. Artists sometimes visit and paint landscapes, and children find the beaches fantastic for collecting shells and pebbles. Birds abound with a plover sanctuary on Griswold Point.
Just a quick note to say how much we enjoyed our stay again at Udder Heaven. We always look forward to the precious family time it offers....board games, sand castles, kite flying and dinners with a view. (And never once do the kids ask for TV!) It's truly a special place.
P.S. The updates to the house look great!
"Away from it all" is the right tag for this cottage apartment. Very peaceful. The three of us had a grand time exploring the fields and beach at the height of the autumn color. The estate is good for long walks, birdwatching, photography, and is a short drive to the stately towns of Old Lyme with its art museum and Old Saybrook, which also offers good shopping. The place is nicely equipped, the kitchen spacious, and the beds cozy. A rural Connecticut feel, all very tasteful. The owners were particularly helpful. We plan to go back in warmer weather.
We had stayed at Udder Heaven before many years ago so knew how lovely the setting was, and it still is - in a large family compound that offers great views of the mouth of the Connecticut River and Long Island Sound, with osprey nests in the distance. But we were also happy this time to get acquainted with the apartment's more recent upgrades - particularly with the wifi! The apartment was very clean and the kitchen is very well equipped. We cooked several meals and always were able to find the right tool or pan. It was a bit cold when we were there, but we expected that. So no need to try the AC, although it is available and would be handy once the weather gets hot and humid. There is a small washer-dryer combo unit in the downstairs of the barn, which we used although we went to a laundromat in Niantic, about 20 minutes away, when we had to do a large load of sheets and towels. We love Old Lyme and the surrounding area and always find plenty to do. This is a very private quiet family setting, and is ideal for people who do not want noise or neighbors, but also want to be near the various attractions in the area - good ice cream, the Book Barn, the Florence Griswold Museum, Essex, even New Haven (which is 40 minutes away).
Stayed for a weekend in October with my husband and our dog. the cottage was adorable and clean. Very comfortable and kitchen fully equipped. The grounds are beautiful - it's a unique spot with trails leading to the beach. Good food options near by (coffees market, Niantic shops/food, Pizza Works), but the cottage location makes you feel like you're away from it all on a sprawling farm in VT. Would definitely stay again, especially in the fall before the cold sets in. Hope to make it an annual family fall weekend.
Although we're only 50 miles from home it seems like 500. And unlike other "beach communities" Udder Heaven offers excellent privacy. This is our second stay here and we're already talking about coming back next year. The owners are very friendly and helpful and the stand alone cottage apartment is well equipped and comfortable. There is wifi and cable TV but it is the surroundings that make a stay here so special. I you're looking for peace and quiet Udder Heaven is where you should stay. You will not be disappointed.
We had a wonderful time in Old Lyme and Udder Heaven. The cottage was perfect for our needs (2 adults and 2 boys aged 10 & 12). Well equipped kitchen had all that we needed. We spent a lot of time on the 2nd floor deck overlooking the meadow and Sound -- very private area and very peaceful. The TV has been upgraded to a flatscreen and there is high-speed wifi which was great for us to keep in touch and to stream movies. Will definitely try to stay here again when we are back in Old Lyme.
If you are looking for a quite, peaceful and relaxing place to stay, look no further you've found it. We enjoyed our lunches out on the deck while watching the boats pass by in the distance. Our kids loved walking on Griswold Point looking at the shells and rocks and many birds that live there. We found it to have a very rustic charm that we liked but were able to keep three kids of different ages content by going to the nearby icecream shop or hopping onto 95 and visiting Mystic, the outlets and the movies.
The kitchen was well stocked and we have already reccommended the place to friends.
This property is located between the mouth of the Connecticut River and the Long Island Sound. There are no houses or dwellings between this cottage and the Sound.
