A fantastic stay !!

  • 4 of 5

Richard was an excellent host very welcoming and knowledgable. Info pack in cottage was excellent. Facilities were very good, truly a home away from home. Highlight was having great lunch on the nearby beach. Excellent fresh fish and service.Old Bakery surpassed my expectations and host went out of his way. It was an ideal place to unwind and relax, perfect balance with great activities and peace and quiet.

A rural retreat in a traditional Greek village to take you back to the Greece of yesteryear. No busy roads - just cobbled paths; no nightlife - just the song of nightingales and the tinkling of goat bells on the hillside welcome walkers and country-lovers.

Ano Gatzea, overlooking the sheltered waters of the Pagasitic Gulf, is a year-round holiday destination. The sea remains warm enough to swim in year round, while the ski resort of Chania gives sporty types the opportunity to 'ski in the morning, swim in the afternoon'.

A walk down cobbled paths though the olive groves (20 minutes) or a short drive (3 minutes) takes you to the nearest beach, while heading up the mountain, past fast-flowing streams and tumbling waterfalls, you can discover historic mountain villages, with crumbling mansions and water-powered olive presses. Climb higher still and you'll find yourself atop rocky crags looking out over the extraordinary wildwood that is the Mount Pelion Forest, home to beech martens, wild boar and the cutest jet black squirrels.

Walk all day in this extraordinary landscape without ever seeing a car - just the occasional farmer on horseback “commuting” between his cherry orchards and his olive groves, or checking on his goats.

You'll need the exercise to work up an appetite for the wonderful cuisine of this largely undiscovered part of Greece: Spetzofai ( hearty local sausage, cooked with sweet peppers and leeks); lamb in ouzo; mezedes (mini portions of meat and fish) served with home-distilled tsipouro, the local liqueur, and “spoon sweets” fruits – cherries, quince, strawberries, oranges and even rose petal – preserved in heavy sugar syrup. Just don’t look at the scales till you get home!

Ano Gatzea is the only official “station stop” on the historic Pelion narrow-gauge railway, which runs from Lechonia on the coast to the mountain village of Milies. The train rattles and squeaks its way up the line every day in summer and at weekends in spring and autumn, stopping quite often for cats, dogs, sheep and tortoises which are frequently seen on the line too! Built over 100 years ago, with nothing but muscle power, it is the railway line itself, winding its way along the edge of precipitous cliffs and across bridges spanning deep gulches, that is the real star of the show, and it is worth walking at least part of it to appreciate it in all its glory.

For lazier days you can also sail with us on a historic wooden sailing yacht. We run daily sailing trips with lunch on the Pagasitic Gulf, or longer cruises to the Sporades islands.
