About Matt Jackson
Casa la Selva is owned by two families (the Squires and the Jacksons). We've been friends since university some 24 years ago and all love Italy.
Matt Jackson purchased this Farmhouse in 2002
Why Matt Jackson chose Umbertide
We love this part of Italy and particularly this area of Umbria; the hills, forests and Niccone valley are beautiful throughout the year and the people are very welcoming. We wanted a house in the middle of the countryside, away from neighbours and noise and when we found la Selva it completely met this requirement. The house sits in the middle of a 1 hectare plot with a further 2.5 hectares of meadow and woodland. In the summer the only noise you're likely to hear is the jingle of bells from the sheep on the hills. We spent the best part of a year restoring Casa la Selva before spending our first summer there in 2003. We look forward to our trips back every year.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
We all love to cook so the most important room in the house is the kitchen. It's great to pop out to local markets and pick up fresh ingredients to bring home to la Selva and cook for our family and friends. When we're there we usually spend some time mountain biking and really enjoy a day's cycling from the house around the hills on the tracks and unmade roads. Over the years we've found some great routes and I'm always happy to provide directions and maps. We usually pop into Perugia, Gubbio or Siena to wander round the towns and eat in some of the best restaurants in central Italy. We can recommend some great places for lunch. Our children love La Selva. Their favourite things are the pool, the gardens, making dens and eating ice cream. No need for iPads etc.

Getting away from it all in the wilds of Umbria
This property is a charming farmhouse, extended over the years to accommodate its original family, and now modernised to be a comfortable home-from-home. We are a family party of 7 adults, and we had plenty of room to hang out together (even on rainy days) or find separate spaces.
The house is well out into the Umbrian countryside, at the end of a track some distance along a "white" road ie made from compressed grit. There are beautiful views of tree-covered slopes in all directions, with the odd house in the distance.
Perugia airport is nearest, but we arrived in Italy via Pisa airport because the flight schedule suited us better. This gave us a drive of around 3 hours.
What greeted us on arrival was a superbly clean, welcoming house. The kitchen is well-equipped for almost any sort of cooking/food preparation you could imagine, with plenty of pans, crockery and cutlery. There is a UK adaptor for the gadgets from home you might need to plug in.
For those who are bothered about such things, the house comes with a plentiful loo roll and soap supply. The supermarket at Umbertide is 1/2 hour drive away BUT it is well-stocked on the fruit/veg front, cheese, fresh and cured meat, bread (rustic "paviours" and sliced loaves), butter, fresh milk, pasta in all states, sauces, wine, chocolate etc etc. (Washing powder is relatively expensive, so you might want to BYO).
We found plenty to entertain ourselves around the house and pool, and further afield (rail trip into Florence, parking at Cortona; motorboating on Lake Trasimeno). We had a coeliac in our party who was easy to provide for (decent gf selection in both Pisa and Umbertide Coops). This dictated our choice of restaurant for Sunday lunch, but we were all delighted with the agriturismo "Calagrana" which was relatively on our doorstep (and whose hostess is English, for those who might consider sending an email to book ahead). The pasta was delicious and we would recommend it unreservedly for a special meal. It certainly fitted the bill for somewhere to celebrate our daughters' birthdays.
Matt the host is very on the ball about replying to questions - we wanted to know how universally cards were accepted (everywhere, except smaller shops). We had a lovely stay, and a wonderful time with our family.
Beautiful Casa la Selva
Our group had a wonderful time at Casa la Selva cooking meals and enjoying the outdoors. The villa is in a very secluded area but that was certainly part of its charm . Nearby fields of poppies and the rolling hills were impressive. La Selva is perfectly located for daily visits to nearby towns and restaurants. We lucked out choosing la Selva.
Spacious farmhouse in very rural setting on the hills. Beautiful pool and gardens.
Very spacious and well equipped house for 9 of us. Lovely pool and gardens with terraces to enjoy the view and stars.
Our 2 year old loved the toys and games provided.
The gardens were alive with beautiful butterflies feasting on the lavender. We saw wild boar on the track up to the house.
The house is up a very long gravel road winding up into the hills. We loved its remoteness, but this might not suit everyone.
Glorious area for visiting local towns, but so lovely by the pool we didn’t venture out very often!
Thanks so much for the kind revew, we're so pleased you have a great holiday.
An absolutely beautiful property in a secluded and peaceful location. Just wonderful.
The owners were extremely helpful throughout the booking procedure and answered my emails very promptly.
Philip the caretaker met us and took us to the property. He explained everything that we needed to know and the whole process was extremely well done.
This property is very special and spacious. It was immaculately clean and very tastefully furnished. It had everything we required. We could not fault it.
We all thoroughly enjoyed the swimming pool which is a very good size and in a stunning spot.
The property is quite remote so you have to be organised with your food shopping. There is a very good supermarket in umbertide which had everything we needed.
There are some very good restaurants and lovely towns to visit. It is in a beautiful part of Italy.
We would definitely recommend this property and we all had the best time.
A very relaxing week, with gorgeous weather, just what we needed.
We came back again to check everything is in order for another summer season. The house and gardens are looking lovely, with the roses and jasmine in bloom. Woke up each morning to birdsong and blue skies.
The children enjoyed picking lots of cherries from the tree on the upper terrace. We even found a few wild strawberries along the track.
Our friends loved the star gazing after dinner on the roof terrace and the fireflies dancing around the house.
We had a lovely lunch one day at Erba Luna in Montone and enjoyed the beautiful views from the old town walls.
We hope that all our guests this year enjoy their time at Casa La Selva as much as we do.
The Squires (Co-owners)
così perfetta !
We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this beautiful isolated farmhouse. It is really a home from home with everything you need from a well appointed kitchen, luxurious spa like bathrooms and individual bedrooms. A selection of CDs, books and DVDs were thoughtfully provided. The gardens, terraces and pool area are stunning, there are lots of toys and games for the kids (and adults) lizards scuttle about and at dusk bats flutter around the walnut trees as you eat on the terrace.
It's isolation is both Casa de Selvo's strength and only weakness, with a 15 minute drive to the the nearest village and 30 minutes to Umbertide so buy extra wine and food for a few days and avoid any need to nip to the shops.
Five bellissimo stars from The Burtons
We are so glad you enjoyed your stay. We just came back from a lovely week at La Selva. The friends staying with us were amazed at their first ever view of the Milky Way, along with shooting stars at night.
La Selva is set in the hills and there are many good walks and tracks for cycling near by. Boat trips and sailing are available on Lake Trasimeno (25 minutes away by car). The nearest village is Spedalicchio (10 minutes drive). The towns of Umbertide, Trestina and Mertacale have supermarkets, cash point and general facilities and are about 20 minutes by car. Citta di Castello (25 minutes) and Perugia (40 minutes) have extensive facilities and many designer shops as well as great restaurants. One of the best places is to eat is Nonna Gelsa in Niccone (15 minutes drive).
