About the property

A Family Friendly Gite In Rural France For Your Peace, Relaxation And Enjoyment

Nestled right on the border of Normandy and the Pays de la Loire, a converted 100 year old farm building which has been renovated to a high standard and offers superb accommodation for up to 6 guests.

Set in a pretty courtyard at the end of a quiet lane (ideal as a central base for touring) you will find the peace and relaxation you deserve as you enjoy panoramic views over the beautiful surrounding countryside.

There are opportunities for walking, cycling, golf, water and other sports if you feel energetic! Or you can simply watch the varied wildlife around the grounds (including our cats) and enjoy our developing gardens.

Alternatively, you can just sit and read while you sip a glass of wine!

In the small local towns you will find quality butchers and bakers, as well as cider and calvados straight from the farm. Street markets sell fresh fruit and vegetables and of course lovely French cheeses.

There are pretty villages, historic medieval and Roman towns, castles, chateaux, gardens, museums, cafes and restaurants to choose from, all within easy reach. The D Day landing beaches are a couple of hours away and the magnificent Mont St. Michel is just an hour and a half from us.

The gite is fully equipped for your enjoyment with lounge, modern kitchen and two airy loft bedrooms (double and twin) with views over the surrounding fields. There is a sofa bed for additional space. If you want to keep in touch we have French and English TV and free WiFi connection.

We have a games room with a pool table, dart board, and outdoor games, including boules, badminton and cricket. We have plenty of space for you to run around in our 5 acres of grounds including lawn area, patio for sitting and eating and our new nature trail, making it perfect for children and families.

If you enjoy wildlife we have plenty. Birds, hares, bats, foxes and deer, barn and little owls hunting in the fields. We are flown over by kestrels and buzzards, while sheep and cows graze just over the fence and butterflies crowd the garden and hedgerows.

Why not come and stay, you will love it!

About Graham Parish

Kate and I moved here in 2012. I am a retired Trade Union official who worked for UNISON. Kate is a gardener as you will see from the garden and vegetable plot here. I am an avid bird watcher and RSPB member. We love the rural life in France and especially the food and wine!!

Graham Parish purchased this barn in 2012

Why Graham Parish chose Mayenne

The property and grounds are an absolute delight, giving us a lovely house to live in and a building suitable to let out to holiday makers. The property has easy access to the channel ports. It is in a beautiful and peaceful part of rural France and allows us to enjoy the rural life. We have 3 cats and sheep and lambs use our paddocks. The are cows and calves in the adjoining fields. the 5 acres of grounds have a lawn play area, a flower garden and an orchard. there is also a vegetable garden. We have made a nature walk around our large hay field which follows a small stream at the bottom with many trees and bushes.

What makes this barn unique

We have an abundance of wildlife here. There are plenty of birds to see including a pair of little owls that nest nearby. We have barn owls, tawny owls, buzzards and kestrels as well as well as regular visits from a sparrowhawk. In May we usually see a hoopoe and there is a range of garden birds. We have bats who come out at dusk and from the gite you can see foxes, hares and deer in the field behind. We have butterflies galore and in our water meter pit lives a fire salamander. this is a great place to watch wildlife and we are happy to show you where things are and to organise bat and bird watching.

Homey, Lovely, Peaceful Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Graham and Kate were welcoming and helpful, with plenty of local info about things to do, where to shop, where to eat out at, etc. The cottage is so charming with a completely equipped kitchen and comfy bed and great bathroom. They had Internet, great TV and a selection of movies for our rainy days, as well as bookshelves full of books, a game room, board games to keep us busy. The location is so lovely and tranquil, I'm sure we will be back!!!

We are on the border of the Loire Valley and Normandy. The landscape is rural with fields and woodlands known as the bocage locally. Both regions are easily accessible from the gite. The Normandy landing beaches are only 2 hours away; the Mont St. Michel is an hour and half from us. The Loire valley with its chateaux are also within a couple of hours.

There are lots of attractions within much shorter distances. The Medieval town of Domfront and the spa town of Bagnoles are close by in Normandy. If you like castles then a must see is the largest medieval fortress in Europe is an hour away at Fougeres, which also has a large proper French street market on Saturdays. The Roman town of Jublains with museum, fort and amphitheatre is only 40 minutes. The Loire towns of Laval (good for shopping)and Mayenne (with chateau and museum) are half an hour away. There are lots of lovely floral villages, St. Fraimbault just 10 minutes from us is famous for its flowers and Lassay les Chateaux has a town rose garden as well as nice bars and cafes. If you like gardens the Jardin des Renaudies has over 3000 plants and has a play area for children, a maze in summer and a museum, its only half an hour away. At Cosse Le Vivien you can find the amazing sculpture museum of Robert Tatin about an hour from us.

Le Mans a great city and the Motor car and bike race track is only 110kms. Famous for the Le Mans 24 hours race and its own museum.
