2 Bed House & 2 bed barn.Large Private Garden - Views Over A Lake & Countryside
Situated on a quiet lane, the spacious stone built single storey converted farmhouse and 2 storey barn has 4000m² of private gardens with views of a lake and surrounding countryside and is within easy walking distance of the picturesque village of Saint Jean de Cole with its restaurants, shop and Tourist information office.
The refurbished farm house has original beams, a stone fireplace and has been furnished to ensure a comfortable peaceful holiday with plenty of space for 4 people. (can sleep 5)
There are two large bedrooms, one with a King size bed and a double bedroom. There is a third bedroom between the double bedroom, the lounge and the bathroom with a single bed. The bathroom has a walk in shower in addition to the bath. The farmhouse style Dining kitchen with range cooker is fully equipped and there is also a separate formal dining room. The lounge features a stone fireplace with Log burner, flat screen TV with UK channels and comfortable seating . Free Wifi broadband internet access is available and the cottage has ample parking.
To the rear of the cottage, double French doors take you from the lounge to the upper patio then to the dining terrace, the covered seating area, barbecue area and on to the private lawned gardens.
Like the main house, the 2 bedroom Barn conversion is stone built with original old beams. The new interior created in 2016 provides a ground floor open plan 40 sq mtr lounge with dining area and kitchen. Double french doors to the rear lead to a dining patio and look out over the garden to the lake on the land next to ours.
Stairs lead up to the two good sized bedrooms - the double with en-suite shower room has a view over the gardens and next to the twin bedroom there is a separate bathroom with shower over as well. Oak beams exposed stone walls and chestnut wood floors are featured in the bedrooms which have antique wardrobes and dressing tables.
Like the main house, the Barn is fully equiped. It has a new flat screen TV with UK freeview channels and Wifi. It has its own side entrance, parking area and outside seating area to the rear.
The house and converted barn are separated by a section of the original Barn and outside, a hedge and garden gate, allowing privacy from the other section of the property. Each has its own access to the lower garden. Alternatively, together they make ideal accomodation for a family or group of friends.
You may want to pick a peach, plum, pear, apple or a few cherries from the trees in the orchard or just sit and watch the wildlife including red squirrel, deer, coypu, buzzards, etc that pass by the garden from time to time.
We will be here to welcome you and will always be close by if needed.
You can rent the main house for 4 (plus an additional child in bedroom three) or the Barn for 4.

Beautiful Cottage in Quiet surroundings
A beautifully kept former farmhouse which is ideal for anyone wanting to get away from it all. Situated just a ten minute walk from the village where there are three restaurants and a few shops. Only a ten minute drive to Thiviers where supermarkets and more shops are found.
The back garden is to die for - nice patio to eat "al fresco" with covered area to get out of the sun if needed. Loads of open lawn with a table and chairs for alternative eating. John and Carolyn are most helpful in settling you in and are available if needed.
Towns like Peregreux, Bergerac and Limoges are only an hour or so away and there are some beautiful villages within a short drive. There is even an inland beach at a lake within a fifteen minute drive.
If you want peace and quiet then this is ideal.

A lovely retreat
Previous reviews are spot on as we were warmly welcomed and looked after throughout our stay. The old farmhouse is spacious, well furnished, clean and comfortable and set in beautiful countryside. Which is just as well as we were un-lucky to experience an exceptionally wet 10 days so did not have the opportunity to sit outside in the garden areas as we had anticipated. St. Jean de Cole is a very pretty and friendly village with a local store that provides daily essentials. All in all this makes a quiet spot for relaxing be it outside or indoors and for exploring local walking routes.
Thanks for taking the time to write a review Clive. I agree you were not fortunate with the weather though I must say it was unusual. September here is normally a really nice month and I recall last year we were still sunbathing on the beach and swimming in the lake just north of here with temperatures well into the 20's and occasionally 30°C. Generally we have great holidaying weather here with daytime temperatures averaging over 20°C for the months of May to September. (September average is 24°).
Beautiful, tranquil, enjoyable.
A lovely setting about one mile out of St-Jean de Cole. The old farm house has been nicely renovated in a typical traditional style but with well functioning plumbing. Beds and furniture are comfortable and in good condition. The extensive gardens provide lots of space for those with young children and there's red squirrels to watch for from the sitting room terrace. There are some wonderful eating opportunities in the village - especially La Perla and the Restaurant St Jean and the village square is a historic gem. The nearby beautiful village of Brantome is within easy reach for those with transport and, with ample free parking, was a frequent destination for our 'days out'. Owners Carolyn and John were our very friendly but unobtrusive hosts who carried out their roles admirably. Definitely worth another visit.
A stunning property in an amazing location
The photos of the Farmhouse don't really give you a sense of the size of the property. We were 4 adults and there was so much space, inside and out. The Farmhouse is beautifully decorated and has everything you need for a great holiday. We especially liked the outdoor space with its choice of patio, covered seating, sunbeds, table and chairs in the large garden or the hammock! The booking, arrival and departure were all well managed and John and Carolyn were around for any queries or problems. St Jean de Cole really is a most beautiful place and there are lots of activities locally. We would love to go back in the slightly cooler months to take advantage of the many walks and the Voie Verte cycle path.
A most enjoyable experience
A peaceful location, spacious and comfortable. Interior decor striking and the exterior offers the opportunity to sit, sprawl, relax, wander and listen to bird and frog life.
The village offers good restaurants a shop a pharmacy, tourist info, as well as 12th century church and chateau. Carolyn and John provide excellent information, both personally and in a crisply written 2 page document. Aost enjoyable stay.

Best French house we have ever stayed in
First of all we want to thank John and Carolyn for letting us stay at L'ancienne ferme. On arrival we were met by them and immediately felt at ease. They showed us round the house and from the beginning we were totally amazed at the way the house has been decorated. The style and taste is French country and every room is immaculate. The bedrooms were spacious and comfortable and the lounge had a magnificent period inglenook fireplace. Our favourite part was the covered terrace in the garden with its comfortable cushions. We spent many a day just relaxing. The garden is laid out beautifully and overlooks a lake.
We loved the region and especially the pretty village of St Jean de Cole and also the nearby town of Brantome with its beautiful river winding around it. There are Chateaux to visit, caves (Grotte de Villars) river boat trips and markets to go to.
All in all we had a fab time and would definitely return to L'ancienne ferme.

- opportunities abound. The Voie Verte is a 17km stretch of converted 19th century railway line linking Saint-Pardoux-la-Rivière to Thiviers via Saint-Jean-de-Côle. It’s great for summer cycling as it’s well shaded by oaks, pines and acacias. Dordogne Cycle Hire provides a range of bikes and equipment for the whole family including electric bikes. Best to contact in advance English spoken. www.dordognecyclehire.com. Being the Regional Natural Park of the Perigord Limousin we are fortunate in having well signposted and maintained pathways with a choice of routes through fields and woodland. Some routes are signposted from outside the house.
We have a soft golden sand lake beach only 10 mins away at Nantheuil. Surveillance during high season and an inexpensive snack bar/café. Free access and good parking. We have some beach towels available.
Grotte de Villars
The Villars Cave, about 10 mins away by car, is one of Perigord’s largest underground networks and has prehistoric paintings amongst the stalagmites and stalactites. Guided tours through part of the network take around an hour. The fairy tale Chateau de Puyguilhem nearby is well worth a visit too.
There are numerous stables in the area, the nearest,Les Écuries de Milhac-de-Nontron which is just a five minute's drive away. You can book for lessons or days out trekking. The National Stud headquarters at Pompadour is about an hour's drive with a lovely race course and you can tour the stables.
There are Municipal courses at Périgueux and Limoges, open to the public. A 9 hole course near Excideuil (30 minute drive) with nice club house facilities. Canoes can be hired at Brantôme on the River Dronne and locally at Corgnac sur l'lisle (just outside Thiviers). There are also various canoe hire pick-up and drop-off locations along the River Dordogne.
On the Route National RN21 direction Limoges, past Chalus. Well sign posted.
Gold Panning in the area of Jumilhac le Grand is available twice weekly during July and August and can be arranged with some advance notice at other times, it usually takes an afternoon and you’re pretty much guaranteed to take home some gold you found in the river. The Chatueau here is magnificent. Open every day between June and September. During July and August there are Thursday night tours where the castle is lit by candles and the guides are in costume. We understand at least one of the guides speak English.
Adventure Obstacle Course
Fun for all the family at Espace Hermeline https://en.espace-hermeline.com/ Bussiere Galant near Chalus (approx 30 minutes away) with, apart from the obstacle course, a recreational lake, velo rail, tennis courts and mini-golf etc
Fantastic restaurants and excellent food at reasonable prices are normal here and the Restaurants in St Jean de Cole and the surrounding area are no exception. If you prefer preparing your own food, there are markets every day in one of the local towns or villages and Saturday is market day in Thiviers where you can also find Supermarkets and many other shops,
Saint Jean de Cole
You can walk along to the village – about 700 mtrs. It is renowned as one of the most beautiful villages in France. You could paddle in the river Cole, play tennis or table tennis and enjoy a drink or meal at one of the bars or restaurants next to the 12th century Château de la Marthonie, which is considered an ancient monument.
Brantome- known as the Venice of the Perigord, is famous for its street cafes on the river Dronne and it's stunning chateau and abbey at the base of the sheer cliffs. Brantome also has a large selection of traditional french shops, a lovely park by the river with shady picnic areas and a fantastic Friday market.
Richard Coeur de Lion
Follow the Richard the Lionheart Route visiting the chateaux and castles where King Richard stayed during the beginning of the 12th Century, where rumours of legend, treachery and intrigue abound. There are no less than 16 chateaux on the route, which spans the Charente, through the Perigord Limousin National Park and south into the Dordogne.
Parc du Reynou
Close to the city of Limoges, it is home to around 600 species of animals and birds in 45 hectares of geographical areas, african, asiatic, american plains, an australian area and a mini-farm. The 80 hectare park is also the location of Reynou Castle with landscaped walks.
Fishing - If you like fishing you are spoilt for choice. South West France, with around 11,000km of rivers and over 3,000 lakes is perfect for anglers at all levels. Fish include trout, carp, catfish, pike, bream, perch, barbel and many more. Fishing permits are readily available in local village newsagents and from the tourist info office in St Jean

If you wish to stay in both the Farmhouse and the Barn gite, please contact us. The Farmhouse and the Barn Gite are separated by a 12 meter wide stone barn. The gardens at the rear of the properties are separated by bushes , plants etc and a wooden gate so each property has privacy but could be used together if you require.
