Very nice house and wonderful location!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in this home. We visited Topsail for the first time on our honeymoon. This house had everything we needed. We didn't really bring anything with us besides our clothes and cornhole boards! Never felt like we were missing anything. Perfect location! All we had to do was walk across the street and we were on the beach. Beautiful sunrises! We went into town for lunch or dinner when we weren't cooking out on the grill. The house is perfect location...not too far from the grocery store or wonderful shops and restaurants. We went to Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach one day for a day trip...only took us about an hour to get there.

This is one of the only homes around this area with a pool and a hot tub. One of the locals we met on the beach knew exactly what house we were staying at and stated "you are staying in one of the nicest places around". It was nice to have the option of the beach or the pool. Also had one of the larger and best landscaped properties around. Can't say enough good things about this home or the owners. They have been wonderful and were always so prompt in responding to all emails. Can't wait to stay here again!

We rented this house for one specific reason, and that was for the hot tub. My family and I enjoy spending our evenings together in the hot tub traditionally. As this was the last time in a long time our entire family would be together in a long time a hot tub was a must. Before making the payment and confirming the reservation I both text with and emailed the owner directly to ensure that the hot tub would be functional at the time of our visit. He confirmed that it would be. The hot tub did not work. Called the hot tub repair number in the cabinet and a guy came out and said the filter was so dirty that it had to be taken out and left out for the hot tub to even work. But it continually shut off and never did heat up. During the problems with the hot tub the owner was very slow to respond texts and vrbo messages. Also if you use the linen service, you have to make all five of the beds yourself. Linens, and hotel pool quality towels are simply placed in a bag right inside the front door. I would suggest bringing your own towels if you use the linen service. The rest of the house was fairly nice. One of the bedrooms is much smaller than looks in the pictures, leaving not even enough room to put two small suitcases on the floor and open them. The kids suitcasess had to be opened on the beds during the day then moved out to the living room so that they could sleep at night. The house was also much less stocked than other VRBO homes we have stayed in. We had to go back to town and buy our own paper towels and toilet paper (there was two half used rolls of toilet paper in the bag with the linen). The nearest grocery store or even convienent mart is about 15 minutes away so if you forget something and need to run back to town to get it you're looking at at least a 45 minute round trip drive. The owner was aware of our plans for using the hot tub, and was also aware that it never worked during our entire stay yet did not offer us any partial refund or anything. He did say the evening that we got therewhen we discovered the hot tub at 49 degrees, that if we could find somewhere else to stay he would refund us. If course being a family of 6 it was too late in the game to find anywhere that was not booked. Overall a disappointing experience, which is my first bad experience using VRBO.

Owner's Response: NOTE: Our 110V Dream Maker Hot Tub, which worked well for three-season-use, has been replaced with a new 220V Nordic "Retreat" Hot Tub which will perform well for those who enjoy sub-freezing hot tub use during the winter season. ------------------------------------------------ RESPONSE: Our offer to refund our dissatisfied guest’s rental fee stands ….. less expenses incurred due to their full four day stay. We would like to call attention to a few pertinent facts: - Our hot tub technician was on site several times during this guest’s stay checking on the hot tub due to the most persistent coldest weather (single digit) the island had experienced since 1918 (called a “weather bomb” by the National Weather Service). The insulated cover being left off the hot tub contributed to the problem. The filter was removed to increase efficiency in an attempt to get the temperature above 100 degrees in the sub-normal temperatures. (Nevertheless, we will replace the hot tub in March with one capable of better handling the increasingly cold weather extremes.) - While hotels make the beds, the general practice on the island has been for a linen service to leave clean bagged-linens at individual houses. This provides some assurance that the linens are, in fact, changed. Our cleaning service will make the beds for guests who so desire. - The eight mile drive to commercial facilities is considered tolerable, in fact desirable, to those who enjoy the resultant quiet, natural beauty of North Topsail. This beach is not host to water parks, Walmarts and MacDonalds (the last two being nine miles away). - We are working to have our linen service provide us with fluffier towels for those guests who do not want to bring their own. - The quality and type of paper products varies as do individual food preferences. They should be purchased along with the groceries which are not provided. (There are, in fact, emergency paper products under the sinks.) - As far as the extent of household furnishings provided, and owner response time, we defer to forty-eight guest reviews received over the past ten years of renting for a fair portrayal. Granted the twenty-seven emails required in preparation for this guest’s four-day visit may have had a numbing effect on owner response time. This guest’s emotional venting belies the fact that several of our guests have been coming back for years … one party for the sixth time this summer. We are always open to constructive criticism and suggestions.

Our stay was wonderful. The cottage is very spacious. The kitchen has just about everything you will need for the week. We enjoyed our coffee out on the deck, watching the waves.

The walk to the beach was not bad at all. The beach was beautiful...and not crowded. The beach is clean.

We loved the private pool. We did not have to fight anyone to get in know the places where you can't even get your big toe in the pool....

We LOVED the hot tub. The hot tub was good at the end of the day.

The washer/dryer down stairs was great too. We have a 3 year old...say no more. :)

At last, the owners are great. They were very patient with us with all the questions we had about the property and Topsail in general.

We will definitely visit Topsail again.

Owner's Response: What gracious guests! We are pleased to have such appreciative North Carolinians stay at the beach house. The same applies to our guests from Pennsylvania, Indiana, Oklahoma and as far away as Oregon. We love all the nice people we meet and enjoy hosting them!

Nice time!

  • 3 of 5

We had a nice stay at the beach cottage. Although it wasn't oceanfront, the walkway to the beach is about 4 houses down and across the street. Expect lots of sand bags around the beach due to massive beach erosion. The ocean is encroaching on the houses across the street to the point where the Marines had to set up sand bags everywhere. High tide came all the way back to the sand bags, so we had to put everything up high on top of the sandbag wall. If you are going to be cooking, here's a word of advice: bring spices. There is nothing but salt and pepper. I made that mistake, so learn from it! (The owners can't really stock things like that because people just take it. I should have known.) The house had pretty much everything you need - pots, pans, dishes, utensils, etc. Even an umbrella for rainy days! We had a slight problem with the TV, but Ken responded immediately.

There are lots of local rednecks (sorry) that go down to the end of the island on the weekends, so expect a huge parade of loud 4x4's with partiers, but they don't really hang around where the house is located. Come monday, the place is as peaceful as can be! This isn't a crowded beach - lots of privacy.

All in all we had a nice stay! (Except for my son breaking his hand. If you ever need medical attention, I highly suggest the New Hanover Medical Center -- very modern and very competent staff!) We would definitely stay again!

Owner's Response: Preparations are being made to restore the beach which was eroded during a recent storm. In the meantime, the sand bags (placed by the town ... not the Marines) are less obtrusive if one uses the beach 50 yards to the right rather than 50 yards to the left of the beach access. As noted in the beach house information folder, a call to Charter with any questions about the TV/Internet/telephone connection, if problems arise, will serve an inexperienced user better than attempts to re-wire the system oneself. We have had no previous complaints from guests about the U.S. Marines who sometimes use the beach on the tip of the island on the weekends. It doesn't really affect use of the beach in front of the house. We all go to the beach to have a good time!"

This was our first visit to Topsail. Our family of six had a great time enjoying the pool, hot tub and close proximity to the beach. It was so quiet and relaxing, just what we needed. We felt at home while there, they have everything you need for your stay! We rented linens which I would suggest. We hope to be able to stay at the house again in the future. Ken was super nice to work with.

Little Slice of Heaven...

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here right before Easter in March. It was a little chilly but sunny almost every day!

We are a family of 4 with young boys.

Location is 1 row back from the ocean

House is on a corner lot

House has POOL AND HOT TUB (the pool was chilly in March) but the hot tub was perfect.

House is nice size with 2 bathrooms and made us feel right at home.

House has washer and dryer- we can back from vacation with no dirty clothes!

House has a little piece of grass on the side for kids to play (we did an Easter egg hunt and the kids just loved it)

House is fully stocked and they really thought of everthing.

They even had beach chairs and sand toys in the laundry room.

We got to see all the military activity from the nearby camp. (mostly helipcopters)

We took rides to beach at the end of the island and the park about 2 miles down the road for the kids to play

The only real con we found with this house is you cannot get beach access in front of the house as they have massive sandbags up and down the beach. Hopefully that will be cleared up soon.

Overall, we loved our stay and would return. On the way in we stopped in surf city at the new walmart and got all the groceries we would need for the week--the house is on the north end of the island and a drive from the walmart. We did a day trip to Wilmington and went to the Battleship North Carolina and ate at the Copper Penny (both great places).

Can't wait to return!

Owner's Response: A good time can be had even pushing Spring! Should point out for Walmart lovers that the one in Surf City is not the closest one to the house, although the privacy of the north end of the island does mean that it is six miles to the nearest busy commercial area. The beach is currently being restored by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and will be completed by the end of this month (April 2016). The closest beach access will be four doors down at the end of Oyster Lane...... a one minute walk from the end of the driveway.
