Located on Mt. Desert Island in the village of Hulls Cove, Twin Gables House is a perfect home base for multi-family or couple groups. Recently a bed and breakfast, guests can share comfortable common areas with family and friends while enjoying the privacy of a bedroom with its own bath.
One half mile away is beautiful Acadia National Park with opportunities for scenic drives, birdwatching, hiking, biking, rock climbing, etc. Three miles from home is downtown Bar Harbor with its myriad of shops and restaurants as well as whale watching and kayaking tours.
The house dates back to the 1880's. Renovated in the 1980's it retains classic charm with its original hardwood flooring and floor to ceiling windows in the living and dining rooms. A sprinkling of antiques and many original paintings, many by local Maine artists, adorn the premises.
After a busy day enjoying the many area attractions, the comfort of the Twin Gables house awaits you. Cool ocean breezes take the edge off even the hottest days of summer. Just to be sure, six of the seven bedrooms are equipped with air conditioning. A big screen cable TV with DVD player in the living room is just one of six TVs on the premises. A comfortable porch with grill and a large backyard lend themselves to cookouts.
From the house, at low tide, it is possible to access an expanse of rocky beach which also leads to the popular Chart Room Restaurant - open for lunch and dinner. Just a little further lies the Hulls Cove General Store plus the local post office. It is possible to leave your vehicle behind in our ample parking lot and take the free shuttle bus into Bar Harbor and around Acadia National Park.
I am a former Vermonter who moved to Mount Desert Island in1979 at the tender age of 22, shortly after graduationg from the University of Vermont. I fell in love with the ocean, the community of Bar Harbor and the park. I spent about 10 years as an overeducated waitress at a variety of area restaurants including the Chart Room which was coowned by my future husband. In 1989 I was able to hang up my waitress shoes and became the host of the Twin Gables Bed and Breakfast. I raised my two children while operating the b & b for 14 enjoyable years. But B & B's are notoriously time consuming so in 2007 we converted the house to a weekly rental and I have enjoyed more free time in the summer for park activities and the like. We summer in our cabin in the woods, about 3 miles from the rental house then move back in to the main house for the winter months.
Mindy Hill purchased this house in 1988
My husband was working for the previous owner of this property when it was damaged in a house fire. The owner, after some consideration, decided to sell the house as is rather than taking on the renovations. Russ (my husband) always the entrepreneur, saw it as a perfect spot for a B&B and the renovations gave us the perfect opportunity to add the private baths that B&B travelers so appreciate.
Probably my two favorite parts of the house are the kitchen window that has views of the ocean (though not as good in the summer as they use to be due to foliage growth) and the back porch which is open air and a wonderfully pleasant place to hang out in the summer. I find the location very convenient.
We all just loved the great house -so warm and welcoming and well provisioned. Thank you so much for letting us share your home. Bed's so comfortable. We all feel like we could live here.
Our favorite vacation destination is Bar Harbor, Maine, without exception. This year we rented The Twin Gables House at Hull's Cove so that we could enjoy our 3 grown sons, daughter-in-laws and 8 grandchildren all under one roof. Twin Gables was a perfect fit. Room for everyone and everything for a memorable week near our favorite sights and scenery in Acadia and on Mt Desert Island. The back porch was our favorite place to eat and rest after a day in the park. The family is already talking about our return trip. Thanks for sharing your Twin Gables Home with our family.
My family of 5 visited Bar Harbor & Arcadia 25 yrs ago. It was our daughters favorite vacation. Thanks to Twin Gables House,
our family of 15, ( 7 grand children) had plenty of room & bathrooms! We enjoyed cooking Lobster @ the house, ate clams & muscles, enjoyed the back porch, & the little kids loved the back yard. Proximity to the park & Bar Harbor was outstanding. We Loved it!
We had 3 families & this house was perfect for our group! Everyone had their own space & bathrooms! The water pressure in the showers was an unexpected surprise & it was amazing how quiet the house was with the amount of people staying there! The kitchen had everything we needed & it was so nice to have 2 refrigerators as well as 2 washers & dryers. It is located on a busy road, but the kids had more than enough room in the beautiful backyard to enjoy the outside. The owner, Mindy was so great to work with too! She always responded quickly & was a big help with any questions that we had during the week! I would highly recommend this beautiful house for anyone, but especially if you have a large crew like us!
Mindy is a responsive and honest host and her house is wonderful for large groups. It is right off Route 3 - conveniently close to Acadia and downtown Bar Harbor (I suppose you could also catch the bus easily if you walked along Route 3) - and since the house used to be a B&B, the sound insulation (especially combined with the white noise from the window units) in the bedrooms are excellent. Our babies slept undisturbed despite the loud talking/cooking/cleaning by the adults downstairs. Water pressure was wonderful. The kitchen, though cozy, had everything you could need. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. Thanks again, Mindy!
Twin Gables was perfect for the needs of our family. We had a nine family members staying at the house and it was still more than enough space for all of us. The house even has several washers and dryers to accommodate a lot of people. It is perfectly kept, clean, with everything that you would need. The property is beautiful and perfectly located within close proximity to hiking in Acadia and to Bar Harbor. The main kitchen window overlooks both mountains and water. It is incredible! The owner, Mindy, really made the trip special for us. When we arrived, she had a new Pack n Play ready for our little one, as well as a baby gate in the main bedroom. This house is perfect for families, especially those with young children. I would stay at Twin Gables again in a minute. Thanks again to Mindy for allowing us to stay in her beautiful home!
We traveled to Bar Harbor for our wedding. I had been searching for the perfect rental to hold my (now) husband and I, and our entire wedding party, which had been proving to be very difficult due to multiple cars and lack of bathrooms. That was until I found Mindy's property. It was PERFECT! The house was the perfect size for all 10 of us, allowing everyone privacy but still able to enjoy the week together. We had plenty of parking and EVERYONE HAD THEIR OWN BATHROOMS!!! (How awesome is that!?!?). The downstairs bedroom worked perfect for our couple with an 8 month old baby, and the deck was the PERFECT place for our rehearsal dinner lobster boil (not to mentioned the fully stocked kitchen providing us with everything we needed). We even showed up early, and Mindy was so wonderful and accommodating. A truly wonderful person. I can't say enough great things. We are already planning our anniversary trips, and if we have a large group again, we will DEFINITELY be calling Mindy :-)
The main attraction of Mt. Desert Island is its tremendous beauty. Acadia National Park has many small mountains that boast beautiful ocean views from the summits after relatively short hikes. The trail system in the park is extensive. Cadillac Mountain is accessible by car and often has stunning sunrises and sunsets. There is even a horse-drawn carriage trip up Parkman Mt. Swimming is available at Echo Lake and for the hardy at beautiful Sand Beach. The park loop road offers incredible scenery including Thunder Hole. Mountain biking is fantastic on the park carriage roads with rentals available in Bar Harbor. Consider visiting during the beautiful fall months to enjoy the lovely changing foliage..
Other Activities: ocean kayaking, shelling, birdwatching, etc
Golf: Kebo Valley Golf course in bar Harbor is very scenic and only about 3 miles away.
