Speightstown House Rental Photos and Description

Charming 17th Century former merchant's house in bustling Speightstown.

Eglantine is a 17th Century former merchant's house in the heart of bustling Speightstown. True to tradition, the shop would have been downstairs with the elegant living on the first floor. To this day, the gorgeous living/dining room upstairs has French doors and a balcony overlooking the bustling street below. There is a beautiful mural painted in this room depicting 'Olde Speightstown' by local artist, Hilary Armstrong. The master bedroom has a 6'6' very comfortable king size bed with a dressing room which has a single bed leading to the bathroom. In the dressing room, there is a door leading to stairs which take you directly into the private walled courtyard. The second bedroom has a 5' bed, again very comfortable, with an ensuite bathroom. The entire house is air conditioned and there is pretty wrought iron at the windows and an electric gate for added security which means you can leave the windows open to get the maximum breeze if you prefer not to use air conditioning. Downstairs there is a dining room as you enter the house with a TV living room beyond which leads to the kitchen. You can access the private walled garden from either the kitchen or the living room and there is a wooden gazebo where you can enjoy outside dining. The decoration is entirely sympathetic with a character property of this age and boasts beautiful wooden floors upstairs. This is truly a hidden gem. Satellite TV and internet are provided. There is a weekly maid service and baby sitting is available by arrangement. A welcome pack can be provided if requested and airport meet and greet service if required. Reservations for car hire, restaurants, golf, fishing etc. can be arranged. Use of the local gym and tennis, with or without coaching, are close by. Polo lessons and chukkas are available within a short distance from Speightstown at the world renowned Apes Hill Polo Centre and can be arranged to suit. Polo is played at Holders near to Holetown and at Apes Hill from November to May and there are many matches involving international visiting teams. Yoga is available at Port St Charles or in Holetown and for those yoga enthusiasts who want to try something different, paddle board yoga is also practised at Port St Charles during the high season between December and April. Port St Charles is approximately 0.5 of a mile from Speightstown Horse-racing is in Bridgetown at the historic Garrison Savannah. In Holetown there are numerous excellent restaurants as well as shopping at the Limegrove Lifestyle Centre and many other stores in town. The cinema at Limegrove provides the latest in movies with seat side service for those in the gold seating. The exclusive Sandy Lane Hotel is also in nearby Holetown. St Nicholas Abbey is an attraction not to be missed and is close by along with the animal flower caves in the north of the island. Harrison's Caves are in the centre of the island and for children, the Wildlife Reserve is a short drive away with the monkey feeding time a favourite. The Atlantis submarine is in Bridgetown for those wishing to have the underwater experience and the east coast is a short drive with the spectacular beaches on the Atlantic side of the island. The calm waters of the West Coast are just a few minutes with Port St Charles with the yacht club offering luxury beach access and Mullins Beach where you can rent sun beds by the day and have lunch at Mullins Restaurant some five minutes from Speightstown. This property will appeal to guests with a love of history. For those not wishing to rent a car, you can walk to almost all amenities including the beach and the bus stops right outside the gate. Although on the bustling street, Eglantine is a hidden gem with a magical garden behind and a true sense of 'Olde Barbados' within.

Wonderful property - part 1

  • 5 of 5

It’s a rare pleasure when one has the opportunity to post such a positive review and maybe it is because the house and surroundings are so in accord of what we look for in a Caribbean holiday home - so let’s start with the surroundings.

Speightstown is situated on the north-west of the island, noticeable for the scarcity of tourists, virtually deserted beaches and the day-to-day inhabitants being almost entirely made up of ‘locals’. There are no karaoke bars and little incessant music and TV.

In short, it’s old Barbados and if you are comfortable being a little away from tourists’ haunts, relaxing, enjoying the beach surroundings and the daily habits of the friendly local population, this is the place for you and Eglantine is the perfect house.

Eglantine is a spacious, elegantly designed, extremely well-appointed house within its own grounds (secured by electric gates operated by remote control) on a street that gets fairly busy at certain times of the day: such as school times as there is a bus stop nearby.

The sense of space is so refreshing from constricting hotel bedrooms; there is a large sitting room equipped with a ‘smart’ TV ( it will also play your films, shows and music from a USB hard disc if you take one ) and dining room downstairs and next to this is the kitchen leading to a lovely garden where you can relax on a sun-bed or watch the humming birds and spot monkeys in the trees whist enjoying breakfast or an early evening glass of wine.

Upstairs is the beautiful sitting/drawing room featured in many of the pictures and two bedrooms with extremely comfortable beds and en-suite bathrooms.

The entire house is equipped with ceiling fans and air-conditioning to enable you to keep cool when you need to take cover in the hottest, most humid weather.

We rented a car and a choice of different beaches (with or without beds, restaurants etc.) are accessible within a few minutes walk or drive of the house. There is also a main bus terminus just around the corner and buses run to all parts of the island with Holetown - the main tourist centre on the west coast of the island - about 15 minutes away by car or bus. There are plenty of local shops and supermarkets almost entirely supported by the local population with more sophisticated 'Waitrose' shoppers and those seeking English butchers being catered for around the main supermarket in Holetown.

There is a cooked food shop directly opposite the house selling reasonably priced, ribs, chicken, r

Great house and very comfortable. Good location.....

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at Mary-Ann house. We stayed for three weeks and were so happy we chose this house for our stay. Mary-Ann is extremely helpful and returns emails straight away. Kerry picked us up from the airport and he was so helpful for the whole of our stay. He even arranged to pick up the owners kayaks and took us to port St Charles where we could easily use them. The house has great WiFi and really comfortable beds. Would highly recommend. Also you must visit port St Charles and meet all the wonderful staff. They will make you great cocktails and lovely good. So friendly. Love Barbados and will be returning. Thank you again...

Exceptional centrally located property

  • 4 of 5

Eglantine in a delightful property which is beautifully furnished. There is a pretty garden to the rear of the house which we used for breakfasting most mornings. Located in the busy centre of Speightstown, it is only a short walk to the shops, beachfront and many restaurants. It is also close to Port St Charles which is about 10 minutes walk and there is frequent bus service to Holetown, Bridgetown and Oistins.

Located along the north-west coast of Barbados, Speightstown is one of the islands major towns and boasts a long and intruiging history. Much of the character of Speightstown can be found in its architecture with its historic buildings dating back to the early settlement of Barbados alongside modern buildings reflecting a developing nation - and in its people - the sidewalk vendors offering fresh fruits and vegetables, the fishermen unloading their catch along the jetty, local characters hanging out at the Esplanade and friendly sales staff in modern shops and restaurants. Once one of Barbados's busiest ports, Speightstown has undergone a renaissance of sorts and is once again an active and vibrant town while still maintaining a quaint charm. Eglantine is a 17th Century former merchant's house in Church Street, a stone's throw from the bustling centre of town. As befits tradition, the downstairs of the property would have once been a shop whilst the upstairs would have been the elegant living. The current owner has renovated the property in a sympathetic manner, befitting the history of the property and many of the original features remain. The upstairs living and dining room boasts a beautiful mural showing 'Old Speightstown' done by local Barbadian artist, Hilary Armstrong. Eglantine has a dining, TV living room and kitchen downstairs with another living/dining room, laundry, two bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms upstairs and a dressing room for the master bedroom. The features include beautiful wooden floors and the most comfortable beds in any rental property you will find! The house is fully air conditioned throughout and the small courtyard to the rear of the house offers complete privacy for enjoying your meals or for sunbathing. The beach is but a stone's throw away as are the restaurants, vendors, supermarket and bank. Everything is within easy walking distance.

The master bedroom boasts a king size 6'6' bed with dressing room offering another single bed and ensuite bathroom. There is also a door opening to outside stairs down to the courtyard garden. The second bedroom has a 5' bed with ensuite bathroom. The house is well secured with pretty wrought iron at the windows and an electric gate into the ample parking area to the front of the house. If you want to experience Barbados of olde, this is the property for you.
