About the property

House views; 5 bdrms(3 w/lofts), 3 baths, 2 sunrms, TV rm, boulder rm; sleeps 10

The Main House: The contemporary, California-style main house is built on levels conforming gracefully to a hillside and offers fabulous views of Rose Bay, the ocean and surrounding woods. It has 5 bedrms (3 w/lofts), a den/TV room, 2 sunrooms, 3 full baths, a sauna, and a laundry area. Upstairs, the kitchen is part of a bright, open space with living, dining and library areas, a wood-burning stove, a sunroom & a small rooftop deck. The house was built by a local craftsman and has lots of interesting and quirky features from hand-hewn stair railings to stained glass windows.

The Bungalow: A path meanders downhill to a bungalow at bluff's edge which offers a deck as a great place to reIax and view the water. It is not open for use; it has no utilities.

The Rock Patio: The rock patio has two levels both of which offer seating area for outdoor meals, entertainment, watching the kids play on the grounds and simply relaxing looking at the water and gardens.

The Pond: Frogs usually take up residence at the pond starting in the spring. A spout from the pond trickles into a small waterway that follows the slope of the hill to the lower acreage that connects to the water.

Why Pat Fn'Piere chose Nova Scotia

We bought this property after joining a friend at an annual reunion held at the Ovens Park. We fell in love with the area and decided to come back the next year to look for a home. We looked and looked until we came across this home. We fell in love with the quirky entrance - with an entry area, then a stairway leading upstairs to the kitchen and dining area, which has a 270 degree view of the bay and woods; and another stairway to the left leading down to the bedrooms that has hand hewn railings and looks into both a stained glass window and a glass door at the base of the house. Another plus was having a family area on each of three levels and a loft area in three of the bedrooms. The master bedroom has windows as walls on two sides and the two sun rooms have windows all across the wall looking over the water.

What makes this villa unique

This is a fun house with a variety of places to spend time together or apart and where kids can have a great time playing hide and seek in the house or on the property. Kids love the various lofts! There is a boulder with plants at its base on the lowest level in a room with two walls of windows. We have a relaxing sauna.

Notes:
The price per night is in U.S. Dollars; we rent by the week. There is a local property manager available. Noted as unsuitable for elderly or infirm because of stairs. Driving around the area is a delight with so many beautiful sites and views - lots of water. Very friendly and welcoming environment. Lunenburg is a great place for dining: everyday and luxury cuisine. Thursday mornings there is a community market in Lunenburg. Everyday there are inviting crafts stores, art galleries and a Fisherman's Museum very worth seeing. Mahone Bay is another inviting unique town in the area that also has much to offer any visitor. A bakery/restuarant and craft shops are located across the La Have River. Take a short ferry across the river and enjoy not only what is right there, but drive on to Risers or Crescent Beach and other fun destinations for a day trip. Rose Bay store is near the property. It sells groceries, pastries, wine and beer and serves delicious meals at limited times

Perfect views and Great Accomodations

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four, plus my parents had a lovely time at Pat's home. The views of the ocean were spectacular, and the balcony was perfect for sipping coffee each morning and gazing at its beauty. It had all the amenities we needed and was located in close proximity to the Ovens Park, the town of Lunenburg and Hirtles beach. While we were a little disappointed that we could not walk to a beach (There is a charge to enter The Ovens), we found that by not turning on The Ovens road and just going straight for 2 minutes that there was a beautiful sandy beach for walking, swimming and fishing. Thanks Pat - we really had a great time!!

Loved the house, but...

  • 4 of 5

First off I have to say that the house is amazing-- very quirky, very unusual and yet spacious and comfortable. The views of the bay are breathtaking - loved the peace and quiet. However, we did have a few issues. First off, we were surprised by an additional 700 dollar bill from Home Away - for the exchange rate. Had we known the prices were in American $ we'd have thought twice (that wasn't made clear). The internet is another issue-- while there is internet access, it is little better than dial up. The fifth bedroom that was advertised on the site was unavailable. There is a TV, but it's about 30 years old, and it doesn't work. For the price we paid, I expected more in the amenities department (we had to wash our towels repeatedly as there were no extras). Would I stay again? Not at the prices they want, probably not.

Owner's Response: We are happy the guests enjoyed the house and liked it's character and views. We love it for those characteristics. We were upgrading the room with a single bed to a double, but found the mattress we purchased did not fit the frame just before these guests arrived. We ordered a replacement, but it didn't arrive in time for their stay. The house has five bedrooms, and additional areas including a separate TV room and sun rooms. They had a party of four so we thought the bed issue would not be a problem. The TV is old, but it works well. However, we discovered when our next guests arrived, the cable had not been turned on for the season. I do not use the TV when I am there. We immediately connected it - and would have done so earlier if we'd been advised. The same is true for the towels. If we'd known they would have liked more, we would have provided them. In the past we left the linen closet accessible, but sadly, many towels went missing. Regarding the Internet, it is not high speed, but I find it much faster than dial up and comfortably use it for my consulting work. We are on a private road in a rural area, and access to the fastest internet is not available to us. We hadn't rented out the house the past two years; prior to that the USD had been indicated with the price. I just checked the Homeaway site and saw that USD was not indicated. I will add it to the house description. Thank you for the feedback.

Perfect place to stay for a vacation whether you want to explore the area or just relax and enjoy the view. The property was clean and well-maintained. All the supplies (linens, toiletries, dishes etc.) were available in abundance. Located close to attractions. We would highly recommend this property.

Beautiful home!

  • 5 of 5

This home was all one would want in a rental: it was well kept, clean and spacious. We golfed at a nearby course, fished, kayaked and hiked. It is an short drive to Lunenberg with many shops and restaurants. We also made day trips to Halifax and to Chester. Wonderful week!

Little paradise

  • 5 of 5

This house was exactly what we were looking for and more. We were two couples and 4 kids and the house easily provided privacy and quiet areas with plenty of space. The design of the house is one of the most interesting we have ever seen. The listing was exactly as described and the property impeccable inside and outside. The owner was always prompt to respond to all of our questions and provided excellent customer service. The proximity to Lunenburg, Blue Rocks, Mahone Bay, La Have, etc enabled us to enjoy a variety of activities and scenic drives as well as sea kayaking. Best of all was the Ovens within minutes walking distance where they had the best little restaurant with wonderful service and great live music. We would definitely return to this property and would not hesitate to recommend the place to friends and relatives. It felt like paradise for one week.

Very large and comfortable.

  • 5 of 5

We totally enjoyed our stay at this Nova Scotia Rental. We had 3 couples and there was plenty of space for us all with rooms to spare. Large cozy kitchen with all the amenities. The Oven's are a truly amazing viewing spot that are literally next door. They have a restaurant with entertainment some nights. (Harry Chapin's brother and family run the restaurant/bar). We were able to take trips daily to Halifax, Peggy's Cove and Lunenburg because of the location of the house. The house is magical, with spinner wind vane's, early morning fog, rain, and fog horns we could hear in the distance. A great get- away. Enjoyed our stay immensely.
