The cottage at Central House is situated across the street from the harbor.
Amenities include all modern stainless steel high end kitchen appliances. The cottage is 2 stories with outdoor decks on both floors, and a private patio for dining or relaxing. A LED TV with cable and Wi-fi internet are included, and built in speakers for sound on both floors. The bathroom upstairs has a custom glass and rain forest sandstone shower. There is also a front loading washer and dryer, and a full sized gas grill for your convenience.
The cottage is one block from restaurants and shops. Acadia National Park is 2 miles away. Hiking, kayaking, swimming, biking, golfing, fishing, whale watching and more are all available on the island.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this great little cottage. Tucked away on a quiet street yet only a few minutes walk to the center of Southwest Harbor. The cottage is fairly new but has all the charm of an older place, with detailed woodwork, fairly tale appearance from the outside, two porches, and totally private back terrace. Modern amenities include cook's kitchen with high end appliances, granite countertops, dining counter, french doors to patio with grille, circular staircase to second floor, wood paneled cathedral ceiling in upstairs bedroom, amazing tiled shower, and great built in sound system for your modern devices like iPod and iPhone. The cottage was immaculately clean and stocked with everything you need for cooking. Barbara and John live 15 minutes away so are available if needed, and made sure everything was going well. Southwest Harbor is on the quiet side of the island, but has the feel of a real town with many decent restaurants, hardware store, library, two grocery stores, and of course Beal's Lobster Pier, our favorite for seafood. And all within walking distance. We would highly recommend this cottage to any couple or family with a baby, and plan to stay there again ourselves.
This place was great!
The aesthetics are wonderful, especially for the top floor bedroom. Lots of windows and trees all around. You feel like your are in a tree house. Recently renovated throughout and feels airy and clean.
Very comfortable and shady for lounging around when not out hiking.
We brought our dog and it worked out great. There are spiral stairs up to the second floor that we thought might be a barrier, but our 40 lb terrier-mix was surprisingly able to manage the stairs on her own both up and down. Also nice is how private the house is. Our dog can bark when she hears strangers until she gets comfortable in a new space, but this house is at the back of the property and backs up to a field. Perfect. Final note about dogs: if you bring yours, go to Little Long Pond on the other side of the island and park on the ocean side of the pond (outside the park) - you can hike for about a mile in with your dog off-leash. There are big rolling meadows and dogs can swim here as well. This was so perfect for our dog that we went twice.
Great full kitchen if you want to cook, but we never did. The center of SW Harbor is just 1/2 a block away and there are several wonderful restaurants Sips, Eat-a-Pita etc. Also a store, Sawyers, where you can buy wonderfully prepared sandwiches for hikes.
Overall, I would say it was an excellent place for us and we will definitely try to stay here again when we come back.
Here are the answers to the questions that HomeAway would like addressed: It was accurately described. It was very clean and well maintained. Barbara gave great customer service. I would definitely recommend this to others.
This property is amazing. It has everything you could want and completely comfortable. It is well maintained, and equipped with all modern appliances. The location is perfect. Just a block or two away from the main part of town. It is quiet and yet within walking distance to restaurants, bakeries and shops. We all thoroughly enjoyed Southwest Harbor and all it has to offer. Beal's Lobster Pound is within walking distance, Best Lobster Roll and Blueberry Margarita. We meet the owners and they are very nice and accommodating people. It was so nice to be able to bring our dog. Maybe next time we'll bring the whole family and rent the main house.
We greatly appreciated this little "dollhouse" on our honeymoon. We found it and the area to be beautiful and restful. We both hope to return someday for a anniversary or vacation.:)
Central House Cottage is an absolutely wonderful place for cozy relaxation after a day spent exploring Acadia National Park. The property is located on the "quiet side" of Mt. Desert Island, with easy access to the park's many hiking trails (we never drove more than ~35 minutes to anywhere on the island). The kitchen came fully stocked, with things like spices, pans, oil, plastic bags, and all the other little things that would be a hassle to transport/buy on vacation. Central House Cottage was immaculate upon our arrival, which I very much appreciated. Barbara was receptive to any questions I had and helped to make our stay easy and stress-free. Highly recommend!
We absolutely LOVED our stay in the little cottage in Southwest Harbor. This is a must-stay for couples looking for a peaceful getaway on the quieter side of the island. We enjoyed many breakfasts and dinner in town while we were there and made our own dinner a night or two in the cottage. The place has everything you could possibly need- it truly felt like home away from home! We loved the spiral staircase! Thanks for a wonderful stay on the island!
The house is located 2 miles from Acadia National Park, fresh water swimming, kayaking and hiking and biking. Southwest Harbor is also known as the 'Quiet Side', a quaint little town with unique shops and excellent restaurants within a few minutes walk. The town dock is a 5 minute walk from the house where you can catch the mail boat for a ride out to the Cranberry Isles, or a 5 mile drive to Bass Harbor where a state ferry will take you to Swans Island. A one block walk to the free Island Explorer Bus will connect you to Bar Harbor and all parts of beautiful Acadia National Park.
