In 2004 we retired and moved to Hawaii to build our dream cottage. We found this amazing property in the rainforest, in the town of Volcano. We created a private drive into the property so that we could build our cottage right in the middle of the huge fern trees. This is the only dwelling on this property and is very private. You can not see any other homes from the inside of the house or sitting out on the lanai. When we were building and creating Hale Mauka we focused on every detail. We made sure the deep soaking tub had a huge window for that rainforest view. The bedrooms have large windows to bring in the beauty of the rainforest. Hale Mauka was built with love and creativity. We love sharing our second home with guest from around the world! We Welcome you to our Hale Mauka.. We hope you enjoy our Hale as we do.. We are now building a second home in South Kona, so we are just moments away if you need help with anything.
Diana Varney purchased this house in 2004
It is Enchanting, amazing and peaceful and romantic and close to everything on the Big Island. It has everything you will need.
The National Park is so close you can visit anytime you want! Cooking your own meals at home and having kayaks and bikes and snorkel gear you don't have to rent. It's all at your fingertips. We have it all!!
This home was quite wonderful. You are so close to the volcano national park it is amazing. It was wonderful knowing that we could stay late at the park to watch the lava glow and not have to drive very long to get home. This home has everything you could possible think you might need. Thank you so much for sharing your home with us. My only wish was that I had booked this property for a longer stay. Hope to return in the future.
Lovely home. Very comfortable and amazingly stocked with games, DVD's, guide books, and even kayaks (which we didn't get to use). Pleasant, helpful, and communicative hosts. We had a difficult time with the wood stove and we are wood stove users at our house. Perhaps the chimney needs cleaning?? The evenings are chilly at this time of year.
We had a busy but relaxing 2 night stay in January 2016 with our family of 2 adults and 2 teenage boys. This was a home away from home hidden in the forest in Volcano Village. The house was very private, comfortable and well appointed. We visited the Volcanoes National Park a short drive away doing the Kilauea Iki crater walk and the Thurston Lava tubes during the day, then at night the excellent Volcano Observatory and Jaggar Museum to view the active volcano. We only wished we could have stayed longer and made use of the snorkelling gear, bikes and kayaks. A most enjoyable stay.
My family and I stayed for 2 nights in this lovely house in Volcano. It is just minutes from the National Park and restaurants, very convenient!. I was impressed with how clean the house was. The fireplace, large bath tub and nice front porch are wonderful amenities to have, when you want to relax and chill in the forest. We had the opportunity to bird watch from the porch and saw some of the native bird species. My kids (ages 9 & 11) were excited to be able to identify the birds, when we got to the visitor's center in the park. There were plenty of blankets & comfy pillows to make for a good night's sleep. The king sized Tempurpedic was also very comfortable. There were flashlights and a backpack available, as well as tons of movie videos (which we did not use), but just in case you want to relax and watch a movie, there are many options. Good informative books about the Big Island, hiking, and things to see. The home owners also had a homemade "things to see" and helpful tips book. As someone who grew up and lives here on the Big Island, I found their book perfect for visitors who want some guidance on what to do while here. Thank you Diana & Rob for sharing your home with us. We made some fun family memories we will remember forever! Much Aloha to you and your family!
The accommodations were far more than we expected and the location was in a quiet neighborhood. I would definitely recommend this property to anyone visiting the Volcano and it was extremely clean and well stocked.
If your planning to eat at Ohelo restaurant, just plan on having a pizza an salad.
We had a short stay but visited the park and loved the lava action at night. Great Thai food in volcano. Fun small farmers market. Walked into lava flow going into the ocean from the kalapana side. Even with rain we enjoyed it.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers free guided tours through the park and Lava tubes. There is so much to do and see in the National Park. We have two kayaks, and there is a great place in Hilo to Kayak. There is a beautiful Natural soothing Volcanically heated pool 35 minutes from Hale Mauka. Five minutes from the heated pool is a vast area of interconnected tide-pools for endless snorkeling possibilities. There are many Waterfalls in the Hilo area. Walk to view the Lava flowing into the sea. Volcano also has Birdwatching--There are 6+ restaurantes in Volcano, From Fine dining to Thai (which is also fine!!) The Park often has live Theater or Concerts, as well as weekly 'After Dark in the Park' talks. Sunday's we have our "renown" Farmer's Market. This Artist Community also offers presentations, workshops, and open studios's. Within 30-45 min there is swimming, fishing and a zoo, bike rentals, shopping, movie theaters, more museums, and wonderful beaches.
