In 2004 we retired and moved to Hawaii to build our dream cottage. We found this amazing property in the rainforest, in the town of Volcano. We created a private drive into the property so that we could build our cottage right in the middle of the huge fern trees. This is the only dwelling on this property and is very private. You can not see any other homes from the inside of the house or sitting out on the lanai. When we were building and creating Hale Mauka we focused on every detail. We made sure the deep soaking tub had a huge window for that rainforest view. The bedrooms have large windows to bring in the beauty of the rainforest. Hale Mauka was built with love and creativity. We love sharing our second home with guest from around the world! We Welcome you to our Hale Mauka.. We hope you enjoy our Hale as we do.. We are now building a second home in South Kona, so we are just moments away if you need help with anything.
Diana Varney purchased this house in 2004
It is Enchanting, amazing and peaceful and romantic and close to everything on the Big Island. It has everything you will need.
The National Park is so close you can visit anytime you want! Cooking your own meals at home and having kayaks and bikes and snorkel gear you don't have to rent. It's all at your fingertips. We have it all!!
This home is exactly as described and more!!! There was everything that you needed here. It was so relaxing with this get away tucked away in a rain forest. Once pulling up to the home it felt so welcoming. The cleanliness was impeccable.
The owners have so many helpful tips and sugestions for the island. Absolutely love and have no regrets staying here!
The photos really do not do this place justice.
The house is really lovely and has been set up as the perfect vacation rental - everything you could possibly need is in the house. Highlights for us as a family:
- massive bath which husband started every day in
- lovely veranda with comfy seats to pass evening hours on
- useful tips everywhere .. From photo books of places to see to notes on how to use the utilities in house.
- well stocked larder of odds and sodds that make cooking a bit more home from home. Am sure this is just previous guests left overs so is subject to volatility but was really great.
- bongos! Who would have known that you needed these in Volcano!
Thanks to the hosts also for being amazingly responsive and helpful throughout the booking and stay
Staying in Volcano is like living in the jungle! There are all kinds of beautiful plants and flowers just outside the window. Diana's place was very comfortable. We used the kitchen quite a bit and it had everything we needed. It was great to have bikes to ride, although with only one speed those hills are quite a workout! The location was really ideal for visiting the volcano, and we had the great pleasure of seeing molten lava oozing from the ground right in front of us. It was a 5 mile hike from the end of Chain of Craters Road, and it wasn't a simple matter to find. It was about 4 miles on a gravel road and then another mile over old lava fields. But when we spotted a small crowd we knew we had found it. The lava may be easier to get to now as it advances towards the water.
Many thanks to Diana and Rob Varney. Their home is a perfect place to stay when exploring the Volcano National Park area of the Big Island. The house is minutes from the park's entrance. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The Varney's home is beautiful and so comfortable. Everything you could possible need is there. We especially loved sipping coffee in the morning and wine in the evening on the beautiful porch. The availability of musical instruments was an unexpected treat. Diana and Rob's willingness to rent this beautiful home is a gift.
The property is spotless. Diana and Rob were just a phone call away to answer questions and provide advice regarding the area. Dinner at The Rim restaurant at Volcano House with views of the caldron was great. We also enjoyed breakfast at the Kilawea Lodge - delicious. I would highly recommend this property. I hope to return soon for a longer stay. Beautiful!!
We recently spent 5 nights at this lovey house- just a perfect location to explore Volcano National Park and the Hilo side of the island. The house literally had everything we could hope for and we loved the wood burning stove for cold evenings. Quiet and so peaceful. Would highly recommend to anyone staying in the Volcano area.
Property was exactly as described and as in photos. For us the proximity to Volcano National Park was perfect. This property has everything you could ever need or want in a vacation home. Comfortable beds, well stocked kitchen and beautiful bathroom plus lots of extra's such as beach chairs, boogie boards, kayaks and a great movie collection to name a few. We highly recommend this vacation property.
