There are restaurants in the Village that offer everything from fine dining to cafe's with local fish and chips or a great hamburger. Eagles Lighthouse Cafe offers great sandwiches with homemade breads. In the National Park "Volcano House" offers tables with views of the caldera of Kilauea below. (make a reservation early for that window seating)

Hale Mauka has it all! masks and snorkels, fins and boggie boards to use to see the wonders of life under the sea. About Diana Varney

In 2004 we retired and moved to Hawaii to build our dream cottage. We found this amazing property in the rainforest, in the town of Volcano. We created a private drive into the property so that we could build our cottage right in the middle of the huge fern trees. This is the only dwelling on this property and is very private. You can not see any other homes from the inside of the house or sitting out on the lanai. When we were building and creating Hale Mauka we focused on every detail. We made sure the deep soaking tub had a huge window for that rainforest view. The bedrooms have large windows to bring in the beauty of the rainforest. Hale Mauka was built with love and creativity. We love sharing our second home with guest from around the world! We Welcome you to our Hale Mauka.. We hope you enjoy our Hale as we do.. We are now building a second home in South Kona, so we are just moments away if you need help with anything.

Diana Varney purchased this house in 2004

Great Location, Great Property

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights and loved it. It was a perfect place to explore Volcano National Park and the entire Hilo side of the island. The house was very comfortable and the grounds were lush - reminding you every day that you were in Hawaii! We loved being so close to the park making it easy to make multiple trips into the park to view Kilauea crater at night and spread hikes out. Seeing lava flow into the ocean and hiking to the lava flows were highlights. We also loved trips to the waterfalls, Botanical Garden, and the warm pools in Puna. They have bikes, cooler, and beach gear that were very convenient to use. The owners were very responsive and easy to work with. I would highly recommend staying here. Already can't wait for our next trip to Hawaii!

Amazing Cottage in the Rainforest Close to Volcano National Park

  • 5 of 5

Our family had an amazing time staying at this cottage in Volcano. The house was everything we could hope for and more! The location can't be beat! When you stay at this cottage you are minutes away from Volcano National Park and a short drive to beaches, waterfalls in hilo, warm spring pools next to the ocean and so much more! It was the perfect home base for us to explore the Hilo side of the island. Some highlights from our trip include hiking out to the lava flow and seeing the lava flow into the ocean, viewing the glowing Kilauea crater at night, swimming in the warm springs pool next to the ocean, hiking to Rainbow Falls and 'Akaka Falls. Our only regret is that we didn't stay long enough!

The cottage is also amazing. Surrounding the cottage are large fern trees, tropical foliage and beautiful flowers. The wrap around lani is a perfect spot for some morning coffee and to listen to any rain fall on the trees. Inside you have everything you could need. The kitchen is well stocked, plenty of movies or games to choose from for entertainment and the beds were extremely comfortable. The layout was nice and open which is perfect for our family (kids 5 and 8). There are also plenty of beach toys and gear to borrow depending on your adventures. You couldn't ask for more!

I highly recommend this property!

Absolute Best location to stay while visiting Volcano National Park

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I planned a trip to hike the volcano park and wanted to stay close. This was a perfect location. Secluded, quiet and roomy. House has 2 bedrooms and 1 full bath. It was perfect for our week stay. We could go into the park in the morning, hike and return home if necessary. We usually packed a lunch so only returned home a few times. The house is fully equipped - ice chest, condiments, beach towels, loads of DVD, plus wifi and cable TV. Just like being at home. Nice to have washer and dryer - with soap. Bed was very comfy and plenty of hot water. We did fly into Kona, so we could shop at costco before driving to house - ad we were glad we did. The next best market is Foodland or Safeway - both a 20 to 40 minute drive from the house The local store has some stuff - but no like the big stores. The house was so nice and easy - we never dined out. There is a "yappy dog" across street, but he only yaps for 1/2 hour around 5 pm. Not a big deal - never hear him in the am. The house is perfect for a couple - or even 3. I would not like to stay there with another couple - 4 people with one bath is too crowded for me, but i am certain others would not mind. Overall, a great experience.

We were wowed by this property; cozy but spacious and charming. Very clean. Quality beds.

  • 5 of 5

This home was perfect. We had a married couple on the king bed and two college students that shared the queen bed. It probably won't sleep any more than that comfortably, but the quality of the furnishings and cleanliness of the house gave us a good feeling at the outset. The layout of the house is charming, with a large front deck, separate dining room with TV for privacy and barbeque deck in back. It feels like a luxury home. The franklin stove in the center of the house keeps everything toasty on chilly nights. There is a lovely huge oval bathtub for those who go for long soaks. Next time we stay in Volcano, we're coming back here!
