"Volcano Hale Mauka" COME SEE THE LAVA!!

Is your own private (non-smoking) Hawaiian Plantation style rain forest cottage nestled within the giant Ohia and ancient Hapu'u fern trees. Beautiful 10 foot cedar tongue and groove ceilings through-out the cottage. Large windows in every room allow for beautiful rainforest views. Sit outside with a cup of Kona coffee on our beautiful lanai and listen to song birds welcome you here. This house is located 1.5 miles from the famous Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. You are a step away from the many wonders it has to offer. View Lava flowing into the sea! A chance in a life time! Hike through the calderas and explore lava tubes and so much more.

Take our Kayaks to Hilo bay and explore coconut island. There is a nice golf course within 5 miles from the cottage. No need for golf clubs, Hale Mauka has a set. The bicycles here are yours to ride through the neighborhood and to the nearby Volcano village. We have two adult bike cruisers and two young children's bikes. Volcano Village is an artist community and there are art galleries to explore. On Sunday, the Farmers Market near the cottage is a fun place to check out. You can pick up fresh grown veggies for your stay. The town of Hilo has a wonderful "Must see Farmers Market" on Saturdays.

You will love cooking in this fully equipped kitchen! The cottage is set up on a whole house water filter system.

There are restaurants in the Village that offer everything from fine dining to cafe's with local fish and chips or a great hamburger. Eagles Lighthouse Cafe offers great sandwiches with homemade breads. In the National Park "Volcano House" offers tables with views of the caldera of Kilauea below. (make a reservation early for that window seating)

Hale Mauka has it all! masks and snorkels, fins and boggie boards to use to see the wonders of life under the sea. Richardson beach in Hilo has a great beach for laying around on the sand and swimming with turtles. The famous Black Sands Beach is only 20 minutes away from Hale Mauka where 9 out of 10 times you will see turtles. You might want to drive to the top of Mauna Kea (4-wheel drive required) to an elevation of almost 14,000 feet or check out Mauna Loa. They both have observatories, what a view! We are centrally located to see it all!!

Come home to soak and relax with a glass of wine in the 100 gallon Japanese style soaking tub while gazing out into your own private Rainforest. This bathroom offers a separate shower also.

Did I mention, A king size Tempur-Pedic mattress that will lull you away for the best sleep ever.

There is so much to do on the Big Island! Your stay here at "Volcano Hale Mauka" has it all for a wonderful adventure on the Big Island.

It's your own private cottage in the rain forest! We give you the privacy you deserve but we are always available to help and answer your questions. Come to Volcano Hale Mauka and ENJOY!! Everything in and at Hale Mauka is top of the line..

About Diana Varney

In 2004 we retired and moved to Hawaii to build our dream cottage. We found this amazing property in the rainforest, in the town of Volcano. We created a private drive into the property so that we could build our cottage right in the middle of the huge fern trees. This is the only dwelling on this property and is very private. You can not see any other homes from the inside of the house or sitting out on the lanai. When we were building and creating Hale Mauka we focused on every detail. We made sure the deep soaking tub had a huge window for that rainforest view. The bedrooms have large windows to bring in the beauty of the rainforest. Hale Mauka was built with love and creativity. We love sharing our second home with guest from around the world! We Welcome you to our Hale Mauka.. We hope you enjoy our Hale as we do.. We are now building a second home in South Kona, so we are just moments away if you need help with anything.

Diana Varney purchased this house in 2004

Well appointed property in great location, best place I've stayed in Volcano

  • 5 of 5

I'm local kamaaina and my favorite place to retreat in Hawaii is Volcano. Of all the places I've stayed throughout many years, this property is the best place I've stayed in Volcano, Hawaii. Here are the features I most appreciated:

- Beautiful, serene and private setting without being deserted

- Spacious, well constructed house with vaulted wood plank ceilings; gorgeously and uniquely decorated

- All the conveniences of home with plenty of condiments including coffee beans (in the freezer), creamer, sugar, tea, butter, cooking oil, salt and pepper, shoyu, microwave popcorn etc. I never underestimate the value of this.

- Well equipped kitchen with range, oven, microwave oven, dishwasher, cutlery and stoneware

- Lovely enclosed dining area where you can watch and hear the birds and the gentle rainfall on fern and ohia trees

- Strong and dependable Wi-Fi

- Luxurious king sized tempur-pedic bed in master bedroom

- Extra pillows and blankets in the closets

- Large deep soaking tub in the bathroom to indulge and languish in relaxation

- Plenty of thirsty towels

- Stack washer dryer in the laundry area, and a bonus toilet

- Fireplace (which I didn't use. Note be careful as it is a tripping hazard) for chilly nights

- Extra jackets, sweatshirts and backpack for your nights at the Volcano National Park watching the Halema'uma'u Crater glow in the dark

- A goldmine of movie DVDs, VCR tapes, and board games to keep you occupied if you want to just stay in.

- Responsive and gracious host

I'm planning another visit to Volcano next month, and I tried to return to this property but unfortunately it is already booked. I hope you return one day. Thank you and Aloha, Diana and Rob.

Comfortable quaint cottage

  • 5 of 5

We stayed two nights in the cottage so we could be close to Volcano National Park. It was so close to the park which made it so convenient and easy to visit at night to see the orange glow from the crater. The cottage was beautiful and had everything you could possibly need from flashlights, water bottles, guidebooks, etc. I loved the tub which was relaxing after a long day hiking and the beds were so comfortable. I highly recommend this gem!

We loved our time at Hale Mauka. Loved all the extras like games, towels, snorkel and bikes. All we brought was ourselves. So convenient to HVNP and the setting was amazing. We would totally recommend to a friend. Mahalo.

Amazing!

  • 5 of 5

We LOVED this place!!! Diana was excellent with her communications. I received a response within an hour of my inquiry. The place was so easy to find, impeccably clean and stunning! This home is the model of how all rentals should be. The temperpedic bed was awesome, the home came with a crib and high chair- so convenient for us as we were traveling with an infant. Diana has little notes all around the house, to assist with reminders for electricity and internet usage. Coffee & condiments were provided, along with shampoo, conditioner and soap. The home is SO close to the Volcano National Park, as well as 2 great restaurants- the Lodge and the Thai place. We had such a peaceful stay at this home, loved it.
