We invite you to our vacation home, located next to San Juan del Sur, an up and coming eco-tourism mecca. The Tortuga Azul is a luxury home and is exactly what you are looking for in a vacation home! The house is designed and built to North American standards and has all the conveniences of home... plus a few!

We have A/C for the hot days and the house can be opened up for an indoor/outdoor living environment leading directly onto the open pool deck. We also designed the home to provide fabulous views from almost every point in the house.
Wake up in the morning in the Master Bedroom and you overlook the infinity pool with views of the Pacific Ocean as a backdrop! The master bedroom is an oasis of its own. At about 600 sq.ft., it has a wonderfull round built-in sitting area designed for lounging, french doors opening directly to the pool deck, a King size bed that will make you want to stay in bed all day, and an awesome walk in tile/glass block shower with double heads for two!
The second master is also spacious and is complete with a tile and glass block bath/shower, a nice window seating area and has a queen size bed. The two masters are separated for privacy by the kitchen and living area.
We designed the main living area in a Great-Room design where everything flows together and again views abound! From the elevated kitchen there is a sitting bar made from the local wood. The entire home is accented with the beautiful woods and canes of the area. The great-room area is vaulted to a stunning 16 feet with open wood beams and a cane ceiling for an exquisite effect. Open the double doors and again experience indoor/outdoor tropical living at its best. The giant glass doors lead to a covered porch area spanning the entire length of the house and open to the pool deck area for suntanning and pool fun! You will enjoy some of the most spectacular sunsets on earth lounging in the swinging porch chairs or relaxing in the infinity edge pool.
The pool itself was a creation from the many pools we have seen in our travels, combining a Waterfall spilling into the pool at one end, a curved infinity edge that spans the entire pool, and seating along the back side of the pool with jets to massage your back, all facing the incredible sunsets you will see while soaking an evening away!! The pool also has a large shelf that is appx 18 inches deep and is perfect for small children and lounging! A turtle 'swims' on the floor of the pool. For the evening, we've equiped the house with satelite tv with western U.S. feeds. We are also set up with both back up water and power systems, for those occasional unexpected outages.
We are located overlooking the bay to the North of San Juan, Nacascola Bay, which puts us about a 15 min. walk to San Juan, or a 5 min. drive. We are right on the way to the surf beaches to the North, Marsella, Maderas, Majaguel, etc. Guests of the house can look forward to relaxing privacy in close proximity to points of interest both North and South.
The home comes with a fully equipped kitchen with all the utensils and cookware you might need to prepare your best seafood feast. San Juan del Sur boast many outstanding resteraunts including El Jardin which is right next door to Tortuga Azul.
Our caretaker, William, lives in a separate quarter in order to help clean the pool and home. People love him and he will take great care of you.

Thanks for visiting our Home, John and Stacia Hagerty
We fell in love with Nica, San Juan Del Sur, and the people of the country over 10 years ago now! Our older daughter started traveling to Nica when she was about 3, now we have another daughter who is 3 and learning all about the beaches and fun, we are older parents, so it is like doing it all again! We have traveled extensively throughout the country and a lot of Central America, and yes, this is one of the 'Great Spots'. We are fortunate to live in Idaho, in the mountains, one of the other awesome spots of the world, so we get to experience both the warm and the cold. We would be happy to help you with an awesome vacation, feel free to ask questions! Thanks for reading....NicaJohn
John Hagerty purchased this house in 2006
If you are looking for a special Nica experience, let us help you, our extensive knowledge and travel can really make each trip that experience of a lifetime. Tortuga Azul is set up to make you not want to leave, but it is worth exploring too, because that is part of the fun of Nica. We have great people that can help with your needs, and help you with the local knowledge of the area, beaches, etc. Our home is just outside of town, which is very nice because town can get quite noisy and busy, we are located close enough for easy access, but far enough to be peaceful and quiet:) Again, please ask for any additional help or info, we most likely have it or can get it!
Perfect location with easy access to town and beaches. Excellent privacy, we have had many honeymooners.
Great people, with the knowledge to help and local people to help with any needs once there, just read reviews, Elie is a great resource!
We thoroughly enjoyed the Tortuga Azul! It was our honeymoon and we couldn't have picked a better spot. The house was very comfortable with all the amenities. Beautiful views of the bay below from the front porch and in the pool ( saw whales swimming by one morning ). Perfect location, 10 mins to San Juan Del Sur and 10 mins to Maderas beach. Serene, relaxing and beautiful! We'll be back.
P.S. William is awesome! Make sure to do something nice for him, he's a good man.
We were impressed with the overall design of the property and the way it looks out over the landscape to the ocean beyond. Large glass doors gave an open feel to the main area as well as the master bedroom. Would we return? Certainly!
Overall, we loved our time in SJDS. The house is in a good location, just a short ride outside of town (we had rented a 4 wheel drive pickup - which I'd recommend). It was a good size for our family of 5, and we really enjoyed the pool and relaxing in the hammocks. The house is also near very nice beaches and local zip line attractions. There were a few things we were surprised by, but they weren't really the fault of the house. For example, we were without power in the house almost every night. It wasn't related to the house, but it would have been nice to know that this happens. Not only is it quite hot at night, but the air conditioners in the bedrooms also help to mask the dogs barking, roosters crowing, or horns honking. I don't know if power outages occur that regularly, but they did the week we were there (one for about 11 hours). A suggestion we'd give would be to provide a cell phone and internet service for an additional fee. A cell phone is provided upon arrival, but it worked sporadically (and ultimately not at all) and I ended up using my own in order to get a hold of the property manager. Internet is also provided, but it requires a trip into town in order to provide a router number, purchase airtime, etc. We tried on a couple of different occasions, but were never successful in getting wifi. Again, not the end of the world (it was actually nice to be disconnected) - just a suggestion that we'd have been willing to pay more to have this set up. Also, there is a care taker on site which can throw you off a bit at first, but we really appreciated having him there. He was very nice, very helpful, and we appreciated his service.
Overall, we really enjoyed staying here. It was a very private location, a nice house, and and it provided our family with a vacation we are sure to not forget. We would definitely consider staying here again if we visit SJDS in the future.
I stayed here in January 2016 with my husband and our four young children, and when we arrived our jaws dropped. Gorgeous though the photographs are, believe me, the house and grounds are even more magical in person.
John and Stacia provide loads of information about the area (I printed it out and consulted it daily - better than a guidebook!) And William is awesome to have around, a really lovely guy.
The house is outfitted to the hilt - lots of towels and bedding, games, a bunch of great movies and a shelf of fantastic books, plentiful cookware, you name it.
One piece of advice: walking to town or to the beach from this property is not realistic, at least not for most people. Definitely plan either to rent a car or hire Elie to drive you places! We arrived without a clear sense of just how far away the beaches are, and while renting a car ended up being very expensive, it was well worth it so we could explore more of the countryside.
The bats in the roof were very much a presence, especially toward the end of our stay, but as other reviewers have pointed out, they really do keep the property insect-free! I don't think we saw a single mosquito. And the pool, oh my goodness, there are no words. Just book it!
We stayed at the house over new years break and really loved it. The central location is great as it's a short drive to town but also close to the beaches (Maderas, Marsella). I wouldn't say it's an easy walk to town however and likely a bit longer than 15 minutes. But if you have a car, this location is perfect.
It's a very private property, William is there when you need him, but out of sight otherwise. He was very good to us, has a fantastic smile, and is definitely a bonus to the property.
We cooked most of the nights, kitchen has everything you need, plus the grill works well. The power did go out once or twice (for the entire area including all of SJDS) but this really wasn't a big deal. And yes there are a good amount of bats... which is GREAT. We didn't even need bug spray to hang out outside at night.
We did contact Ellie for one boat trip to Playa Blanca, I believe we went with "Captain John" and it was great. We caught a fish that they filleted for us. We took it home and grilled it and it was delicious. Other than that, we just loved driving to the different beaches every day and surfing/relaxing, then coming home to watch the beautiful sunset.
If I had anything negative to say it would be the dogs at night. There's probably nothing the owners can do, but they are very persistent the whole night. So if you are a light sleeper, bring earplugs. Other than that, everything was perfect.
I would recommend to anyone and would stay here again.
My husband and I traveled to SJDS for the first time this September. We had planned the trip with 6 months in anticipation. Initially, I had thought I booked with another party, but as I went to tie up details of our trip, I found out that our deal was never sealed (not really sure how this all happened) and I was left scrambling. I anticipated a mess, and made a few inquires, with Tortuga Azul being first to respond. It was meant to happen. Not only was the house available, but John offered up many ideas as to how to get our vacation started with ease. I agreed with John's recommendation to have Elli shuttle us from Manauga to SJDS. It was a seamless process, with us connected to the fact that we had selected a great way to start. The trip to from the airport to the coast was great, and once arriving to SJDS and the house, the great experiences continued. We found the house to be AMAZING. I was comfortable, well equipped, and left me feeling connected to the rest and relaxation that I had needed. The home is beautiful, and while the little luxuries of home were found, the expansive views, the colorful sunsets, and nicely appointed home was all we really needed. The home is nestled in a private community, quiet, and well cared for. The home's caretaker is in premises, and helps to make sure needs are met. Would I recommend TA to others, without question! As a matter of fact, we will be back in July, for and 3 weeks this time, because a week was just not enough! We will be traveling with our 3 year old and my folks, and have complete trust in the area, the home, and the fact that our experiences can only be more amazing that the first! John's input and the work put into ensuring a great stay are invaluable. I am not at all sad that the initial rental fell through, as this allowed the opportunity for us to discover TA. One thing -- An SUV is advisable as you will want to explore the area, and doing so in a "regular" car is not recommended. Enjoy, and as you prepare for your travel, keep Tortuga Azul at the top of your list for a stay.
It was wonderful! The pictures online do no do the house justice! We were so happy to cook dinner every night, wake up early to sit by the pool and drink coffee, and the ease of the drive to and from town. Their caretaker William was a treat. Kerstin, the property manager was incredibly accommodating, and Elie, their driver/surf instructor was really so much fun for our younger, adventurous group! I would 100% stay again!
San Juan del Sur is one of the most visited beaches, by both foreign tourists and Nicaraguans. The beach is located inside an almost perfectly U-shaped bay. In San Juan del Sur you can enjoy a variety of seafood in the numerous restaurants that are situated right in front of the bay. Casual beachfront bars with thatched roofs are the norm! For more adventure you can hire a boat and visit the pristine, neighboring beaches or take a shuttle from downtown. Go surfing with Joey the Ausie at “Action Tours”! There is a great canopy tour (Flyin Frog) just outside of SJDS, they also offer great horseback rides where you can see local animals and great views! Big game fishing, diving, and surfing are also among the options. We are about 1 1/2 hour from Granada. It is easy to visit the twin Volcanos of Ometepe from the house, or Mambacho! From Managua it takes about two hours to get to San Juan del Sur. We can arrange a shuttle pick up for you or you can easily rent a car at the airport!
