Casas do Porto is a vacation home designed with the flexible division of two smaller houses, Casa Azalea and Casa Hortensia for the individual or small group of people or to accommodate a large group for family gathering as a one unit.
In this peaceful hamlet of Mosteiros, just the quiet seaside road stands between the house and the ocean cove that for centuries has served the local people as the fishing port.
Your morning breakfast on the front terrace will allow you the opportunity to witness the return of the small rugged fishing boats from their night´s catch. Wait until the boats dock; take a walk for about 100 meters. View the catch and point to what fancies your taste. The freshness of the sea is like nowhere else, worthy of any price.
-fresh fish, bakery and fruit/vegetable trucks pass most days to purchase fresh items
-peaceful village to experience traditional style of life
We would thoroughly recommend this property. You are in safe hands with Bonita who is welcoming and conscientious. We are a family of four with two teenagers. The sea view from the property is amazing - you will never tire of this. Mosteiros is full of character - the locals do seem to take great pride in their town. The volcanic pools are great for swimming and snorkelling. There are nice places to eat and local shops which sell everything you would need for your stay. The winding road to Ponta takes some getting used to but it is worth it.
A beautiful spot, and we appreciated the slower pace of Mosteiros. The flat was perfect for our family of five. Super clean and comfortable! The patio is an absolutely ideal place to enjoy breakfast, dinner, or a glass of wine while watching the sunset. The laundry facilities are a plus. Bonita is very pleasant and helpful, and orients you to the village and island. Downsides? We found the kitchen amenities somewhat limited so we only cooked breakfast at home. And do note the rather strict check in/ out times as they may be an inconvenience if you are traveling from overseas.
My partner and I spent a beautiful, relaxing week in Mosteiros in early May. The house was lovely with fantastic views from the balcony directly over the ocean. Mosteiros is a fairly sleepy, relaxed fishing village with friendly locals and a very laid back feel. There are two shops in easy walking distance from the house where you can buy all the essentials. There are several restaurants in the village, our favourite was the Italian which does fantastic pizzas! Our stay seemed to coincide with some national holidays, so there were a couple of days when the restaurants were shut, but we made good use of the property's BBQ facilities on those days.
As this was our first time on the Azores, we were slightly worried that booking accommodation on the far west of the island might not be the best location to see all the sights, but in fact, as long as you have a hire car, most things are within easy reach (Ponta Delagada about 35min, Lake Fogo about 1hr 15 mins).
Finally, a big thank you to Bonita and Ed, who kindly met us from the airport (we were on a v. late flight) and escorted us to the house so we could find our way easily. Bonita and Ed were also on hand to help with any queries and provided plenty of tips on the local area.
The Azores are beautiful with so much to see and do. Would definitely recommend it!
We had great time staying in the Hortensia house in October. The house is very clean and the view is unbelievable. Kitchen is bit on smaller side to cook full size dinner for 4, but why would you – there are a few restaurants in the village (O Chicos being our favorite one), all no more then 5-10 minutes’ walk from the house. There is a small grocery/convenience store just around the corner, literally 2-3 minutes away. Fruits, vegetables, milk, yogurt, fresh bread, no-frills choice of alcohol – we did not need to drive to a bigger store for anything.
The house accommodated 4 of us very comfortably, TV had hundreds of channels (not that we really had time to watch), the Internet worked very well and water had very good pressure and temperature.
It might get bit busy at times with tourist cars stopping by to take a picture, but that’s small price to pay for fantastic view and the location. And did I mention most beautiful sunsets?
Bonita, property manager, was most helpful. We tried few restaurants and hikes she recommended and would totally recommend them ourselves. She even provided a local cell phone in case we needed one – very nice touch.
I probably would not pick Mosteiros if it was our first visit to Sao Miguel, more central location would make more sense if you want to see the whole island. This location worked great for us this time as we wanted to relax, swim and mostly stay on western part of the island.
We are definitely coming back here, most likely with friends or family to stay in the second unit of this semi-detached house.
This property was BEAUTIFUL and very accurate to their description! Very clean and well maintained.
Bonita greeted my friends and I and told us a bit about the island and what it had to offer, She also provided us with a map and showed us some Hot Spots! We had a car, so we were able to tour the entire island of Sao Miguel without any problems.
Great Experience and Great Customer Service! Highly Recommended!!
Thanks again Ed and Bonita!!
Great location if you enjoy a quiet little village and like to sit on the deck and look at the ocean. Very nice clean place with everything you need. Close to lots of really great sites to see on Sao Miquel.
Within the village of Mosteiros one can enjoy the black sandy beach that is only about 200 meters from the Casas do Porto.
There is a convenience grocery store within 50 meters and a pharmacy at about 100 meters. There are a few café bar types where one can get an espresso or something stronger. Two traditional small restaurants in the village offer lunch meals on daily basis, and dinners during the summer months.
If you are a fish enthusiast, you may get the opportunity of buying fresh fish at the port when the local fishing boats come in around nine in the morning.
In the neighboring village of Ginetes, a 20 minute drive, you will find a place called Ferraria, where a thermal spring is found on the ocean´s edge where you can swim in the warm water.
Visit the Azores and come see the green island known as Sao Miguel. Allow your senses to go back in time and let us make this a special holiday for you.
