The Mangy Moose offers a sugar-sand bottomed lake area, shallow for 50-60 yards. Quiet and private, this is one of only a few places on Lake Mitchell or Lake Cadillac that does not have a busy road running right behind the property. The cottage is located on a private cul-de-sac with an additional lot buffering it from the property behind.
Well maintained and immaculate this 2000 square foot lodge offers a floor to ceiling field stone wood-burning fireplace, open living room and dining room featuring entire wall of windows overlooking beautiful Lake Mitchell! Air conditioning is not necessary as the lake breezes and ceiling fans are prevalent. Four bedrooms and four bathrooms, each tastefully decorated, featuring high quality bedding and luxurious linens.
Master bedroom is located upstairs w/king size bed; master bath features a large walk-in terrazzo tiled and jetted shower as well as a heated floor; second and third bedrooms are downstairs each featuring a queen size bed and private bathrooms with showers; fourth bedroom is located upstairs and offers a bathroom with a tub and shower. The bedroom sleeps eight with one queen bed, 2 double bed/futons and 2 twin bunks.
Large 42 inch Flat Screen LCD TV offering cable with premium channels, wireless internet, eight person hot tub off the deck, a dock extending 160 feet out into the lake, water volleyball, Caribbean island lounger and a water trampoline.
The MANGY MOOSE CLUBHOUSE (Optional Rental $350 total for the week) offers an additional 1000 square feet of living space via a professionally finished 2 story, detached 5 stall garage; this space is GREAT for kids or adults of all ages! It contains a bunk bed with twin upper and double lower, a double futon, a fold out double couch, pool table, ping-pong table, air hockey, shuffle board, darts, cable TV, PS2 video games, and stereo. The Clubhouse is heated by a gas burning woodstove and furnished but does not have running water, nor a bathroom. Please note: The Clubhouse may be rented in cooler seasons, however, it does not have forced-air heat; the gas wood stove will keep it warm enough for daytime use, but we do not recommend using it as sleeping quarters during the winter months which is why we discount the cost of the clubhouse in the off-season.

The Moose Lodge worked out really well for us. We all had our own bedroom and bath and we made good use of the deck. When we ate there, that's where we were. We did lots of side trips to places like Sleeping Bear and the wineries. The weather really cooperated too.
We also went twice to breakfast to a new place in Cadillac in the restored old train station called "After 26". It is partially staffed by people with disabilities. The after 26 refers to the age when they leave the "system" and can't get anymore training or help. They are open for breakfast and lunch. The food was good and the restaurant itself is nice, a really good restoration.
Everything was exactly as described, the location was perfect and the Moose worked out perfectly for our golf foursome - even the weather co-operated. We had a minor key access problem to the games room and the owners responded immediately. The entire transaction was very professionally handled and the owners were a pleasure to deal with. We hope to come again.
We stayed here for a weekend ski trip. It's obvious that Laurie really cares about the property -- it has a lot of personal touches and very nice like-home feel. We LOVED the hot tub and the lake-front view. The beds were great! (new memory foam mattresses) The kitchen was well equipped for our pot-luck night. The layout really worked well for our group -- it was nice to have mix of large bunks for adult singles and private rooms for couples plus lots of bathrooms! They also have summertime add-on amenities such as a game room and boat rental that we'll probably take them up on over the Summer!
Had a wonderful time at the lake with children and grandchildren. The owners were immediately responsive to all of our needs.
We loved our week at Mangy Moose Lodge. We arrived with two families (4 adults, 5 kids ranging in age from 6-13). The house is very clean and well cared for. Having two bedrooms with en suite bathroom was great for the couples. The kids all slept in the bunk room upstairs comfortably, but that left us with an unused bedroom to be able to spread out a little and have the option of separating out the kids, if needed. The kitchen, while small, was very well equipped. The supply and variety of barware was impressive to our bartender for the week. :-) The view of the lake from inside was lovely. We loved the easy access to the beach and shallow water area for the kids to play. It was a quiet and relaxing deck area for enjoying cocktails and meals. We were pleasantly surprised at how uncrowded the lake was in height of the summer. The firepit was terrific for building fires and having s'mores and just enjoying the evening. We rented the pontoon boat for 3 days, which was great. Lake Cadillac and Lake Mitchell connect via a canal, so it was nice to have to multiple places to explore. The lakes are not huge or very deep, so three days with the pontoon was good for us. We also rented the paddleboat for the week last minute, and that was well worth it. We all enjoyed some time going around on that. We brought a couple of our own kayaks, which was great as well for exploring around the lake. We had a couple of small issues (internet router died and we had short term power loss in the master bathroom), but they were quickly addressed and resolved.
We enjoyed a day trip to Mackinac Island, which was about a 2 1/2 hour drive to the ferry dock. We also went up to Traverse City one day, which was a little over an hour away. That was a lot of fun. We planned a trip to Sleeping Bear Dunes, but unfortunately a huge storm that came through on the Sunday night of our week there closed the park for the week. So, the location is great for several different locations around North and Northwest Michigan. We could definitely see making a return trip some day.
Our group consisting of 4 adults and 4 teens had an amazing stay at the Mangy Moose during Labor Day weekend. The house was beyond what we expected. Both of the men in our group who love to cook were very impressed with how well appointed the kitchen was. They also loved the vast amount of different barware that was provided. The house was spacious, laid out very well, and extremely clean. The beds were very comfortable and the bed linens were of high quality. We also loved the fact that all of us could eat at the same table whether we ate inside or outside on the deck (both tables seat 10...something you do not see too often). We played water volleyball, the kids jumped on the water trampoline to their hearts content while we hung out on the dock. When it got to hot on the dock, we sat on the deck as there are trees that surround the deck (but you still have an amazing view of the lake) that provided shade. Dealing with the owners was a joy. They went above and beyond. There was an issue with time of check in. To accomodate the earlier check in time, they added people to the cleaning and maintenance crew to ensure the home was ready for us. We can not say enough good things about the Mangy Moose or the owners. We will definitely keep this place in mind for future visits!
Our family of 6 adults, two teens and 4 preschoolers (plus weekend company) had a great week at the Moose. With such a great variety of ages and interests, we took the clubhouse, the entire boat package and were the inaugural family for the paddleboards (they were great). We were fortunate to have good weather so we were outdoors almost all the time. The lake was perfect for the little ones- sandy, warm and shallow. No worries! We used the boats every day and had campfires every night. Our only problem was handled as efficiently as possible: the water heater died. Jeff the maintenance man was on the scene quickly but to no avail. Since it was a weekend, the new install took place on Monday. The owner John came out himself, rented a motel room for us to shower and bent over backwards to help in all ways possible. Stuff happens, and we were were not dissatisfied. Like the others, we barely left the property-except for ice cream. We did find the second frig in the clubhouse to come in very handy for all the food. The little ones also rode bikes and scooters on the rather private cul-de-sac, which took away some worries. Great memories at the Moose!
Cadillac offers a wide variety of recreational activities, mouthwatering cuisine, appealing attractions, unique shopping and is clearly a small town with a ‘vigorous economy, a healthy environment and a vibrant sense of community.
There are large chain grocery stores and the usual fast food restaurants, but we encourage you to try the locally owned businesses and restaurants created by those who live, here. For instance, The Clam Lake Beer Co is a newly opened brew pub offering 20+ beers, brewed on site; the sport a great menu and wine is offered, too :)
To wear off that great food and drink; we offer over 200 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, 34 downhill ski runs with over 485 feet of vertical drop, over 58 miles of cross country ski and snow shoe trails (15 groomed miles), 90,000+ acres of state and national forest, and three major rivers with two large lakes offering year around world record fishing. Recreation defines our lives and offers ‘naturally inviting’ reasons to visit us.
After the day in the great outdoors, Cadillac offers unique shopping boutiques, three bowling centers, a roller skating rink, a championship ice rink, two full service health & fitness facilities, a 3D movie complex, and of course mouthwatering cuisine at the many locally owned restaurants around the area. Add these attractions to a full line-up of winter festivals and you can spend a fun-filled, or relaxing vacation – either way, come connect in Cadillac, you’ll keep coming back for more.
Once you arrive at the Moose you will most likely not want to leave the property; however, should you decide to take a day trip we have recommendations!
Are you a golfer? Enjoy fine dining? Sunsets on Lake Michigan? Check out Arcadia Bluffs located in Empire, Michigan. Arcadia Bluffs is just over an hour's drive, West of the cottage.
Even if you don't enjoy golf you will enjoy this location's ambiance of gorgeous views and scrumptious food! Drop off the golfers and head to Frankfort for the day! Rejoin them at night for the sunset and dinner :)
Don't Miss Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park! An hour from the cottage and less than 20 minutes North of Arcadia Bluffs is often the highlight of our guests' day trips. Pack a lunch, take a hike and experience the stuff lifetime memories are made of!
Manistee is 45 minutes, West and offers both a casino and Lake Michigan shores. Traverse City is less than an hour and hosts many festivals throughout the year, including the World Famous Cherry Festival in July. Also in Traverse City - the Leelanau Peninsula is home to many wineries and shops.
You will never lack for something to do when you stay at The Moose! Or, just kick-back and do nothing at all and still experience one of the best vacations of your life!
