About Matthew Turner

Matthew lived in Juneau for 10 years, and now resides primarily in beautiful Sitka, 90 miles away by air. He keeps his house in Juneau so he has a place to rest his head during his regular visits to family in town, and so folks like you can enjoy his amazing place and our amazing town.

Rhonda (pictured here) is pleased to join them in hosting visitors in their lovely cottage apartments and making them feel welcome in their home town. Rhonda is a close family friend of Matthew and has lived with her family here in Juneau (and down the street from the Rainforest Cottage) for over 25 years. She enjoys gardening, hiking, gathering to play ukulele with friends, eating good food and sharing a good story.

Why Matthew Turner chose Juneau

Juneau is a unique combination of a thriving capital city and a welcoming small town. It is filled with artists, live music and great food, while also having some of the most amazing wilderness literally in our backyard. Downtown Juneau, in particular, provides all of this without ever getting in a car.

What makes this townhome unique

The Basin Road neighborhood is one of the oldest in Juneau, its homes originally built to house workers and managers of the gold mines in the surrounding mountains. Today, the area is loved by locals as the best daily connection with the outdoors, with anything from leisurely walks to back-country running and world-class hiking... truly just around the corner from the Rainforest Cottage.

Fabulous four 4.

Walk around the corner from this Basin Road unit and you are in the woods. It's also "in town" within easy walking distance of coffee shops, restaurants and gift shops. Two bedrooms, kitchen, dining/living room were very comfortable for 3 adults and a baby (high chair and crib available). Washer and dryer in the unit came in very handy for washing up dirty, wet clothing following many days of hiking. Very quiet, beautiful location. 👍𣐽򒨊

Excellent Family Stay in Juneau - July 2016

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 (kids aged 16-boy, 13-girl, and 11-girl) loved the Fiddlehead. My wife and I used the main bedroom, our two girls used the room with two singles and our boy used the pull out sofa bed. Melissa made everything very easy and convenient. There is an amazing hiking trail nearby that our whole family enjoyed - the Gold Creek Flume Trail. It is an easy hike but very fun.

The area is very quiet and only a few minutes from downtown Juneau and an easy 15 minute drive from the airport.

Many of the two lane side streets in Juneau are very narrow but we had a Suburban and managed to get around without any problems. Parking in front of the building was big enough to fit our Suburban and the other apartment guest's car.

The interior was very neat and clean and we had plenty of towels/sheets/blankets including setting up the pull-out sofa. We did not use the TV, etc. and the internet worked great for what we used but most of our time was spent out exploring.

Juneau was our favorite stop in Alaska and the Fiddlehead was the favorite place we stayed. Thank-you Melissa!

OUR STAY WAS GREAT

  • 4 of 5

The set up was fine for two couples but would work nicer for a family with two children as one bedroom has two twin beds. The living area was clean and bright. We had all we needed to cook any of our own meals. The bedrooms were small but workable for us despite the two beds in the second room. The location was fine but the walk up the hill from downtown is quite demanding and may not be possible for everyone. The manager of the property was right on the spot when there was a problem with both the internet and TV. They spent a lot of time while we were out on a excursion to get this fixed! Over all I would recommend staying here for most anyone. It made our experience more "real" in Juneau!

Just Right

  • 5 of 5

Excellent place to stay. Had entire family of 9, grandma/grandpa, our family of three, and my brother's family of four. Easy access to town and awesome hiking trail heads. Be sure to visit the last chance mine up Basin road, which our friends are the caretakers.

Car: recommended

Many of the attractions listed (downtown shopping, museums, retaurants, attractions, tours, etc.) are within walking distance of the Rainforest Cottage, including hiking. But several of the best hiking, scenic walks/drives, and features are anywhere from 3-30 miles away, so a car is very nice to have if you're in Juneau for more than a few days. In the summer, bus & ocean (fishing and whale watching) tours leave from downtown Juneau regularly, so a car is not a necesity.
