About Jeff Shook

The original owners had incredible vision even back in the 50's to build such a unique and beautiful home they called 'The Hideaway'. They constructed a 12 ft steel water wheel down on the creek that was beautiful. When we bought the home we wanted to restore the property and water wheel to its grandeur and make it even better to share with folks that love the mountains. My wife and I invite you to experience the vacation cabin rental that you will always remember the good times with your family. We re-named the hideaway to the Brown Mountain Lodge. Our goal is to provide one of the best family oriented vacation and cabin rentals in the Boone and Blowing Rock NC area.

In 2007 I wrote a true short ghost story about the adventures my brother and I have experienced in the Brown Mountain Area. The book is a collection of and titled '13 Terrifying Tales from the North Carolina Piedmont'. A copy of the book and pictures to document my tales as well as other books about the area are in the Lodge for your reading pleasure around the campfire. This book is published by Lorimer Press and is available at Barnes and Noble and other bookstores in the region.

Jeff Shook purchased this house in 2000

Why Jeff Shook chose North Carolina

We admired and dreamed about owning this home as a kids and when the opportunity presented itself we made it happen. The Brown Mountain area and Wilson Creek Gorge is off the beaten path and has been undiscovered for years. People are finding out about it now since the River was designated a Wild and Scenic River in 2004. If your looking for a private paradise pet friendly vacation home in a secluded Mountain setting with beautiful streams, waterfalls and River Gorge then you just found it.

What makes this house unique

BML is a multi level home with 3 BR's, the living area and kitchen are comfy and set up for family fun and enjoying the home. We have WiFi and HiDef TV for staying connected with the world. Guests really enjoy our outdoor living area with fireplace, grills and swings that looks over the creek. Right up behind the house are terrific trails that we have views of on our web site.

Family Vacation Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We throughly enjoyed our family vacation getaway. The owner was a pleasure to work with and very helpful!! The description is accurate regarding the location, layout and amenities, although there are only showers, no bathtubs in the bathrooms. The house is a "rustic cabin in the mountains", adjacent to Wilson's creek, accessed by a long gravel road that runs along the creek. The property was clean, well-maintained and well furnished with kitchen appliances. We loved the deck, the waterfall and the swimming spot. My husband and 7-year old son even went for a short swim. My son was a bit disappointed that the water-wheel was not working, but it was completely forgotten when he realized that he could play darts and horse-shoes. There is even a tree-swing that my husband and brother-in-law both thought was great. There is plenty of room to run around, and although the steps down from the deck to the water are steep, there is a much gentler slope if you go around the house. We enjoyed hiking the trail behind the house that goes to a small waterfall and to a lookout for Grandfather Mountain. (If you are desperate for cell phone service, my husband was able to access it on the trail up near the lookout spot!) We also hiked to Betsy's Country store. The gentleman there gave us other great places nearby where we could go hiking. It was a very relaxing vacation. Thanks, Mr. Jeff!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking time to review our property! We just upgraded the down stairs TV to 32" with built in dvd and added a new DTV receiver to try to eliminate some remotes and added a new washer. Earlier this spring we updated the tile and fixures in the downstairs bathroom and replaced the front door with a prettier door. Basically we're constantly trying to find ways to make our home more inviting, fun and family friendly. We just added 25'X175' pond that the frogs have taken to and I put some creek minnows in there but we've got a kingfisher that's been hanging out so I believe they are gone already. I may put a few trout in there to see if they can make it. The water wheel is still on my to do list. Thanks again.

Loved this roomy, rustic, quirky place. The proximity to the river and the land is a little slice of Heaven. We didn't want to leave. Our family definitely needed this vacation with nature. Thank you for sharing your home.

Having a reflective house # would be much easier to find house at night

  • 4 of 5

It's a beautiful place and we loved the creek with all it's waterfalls! The house was spacious. We enjoyed the covered patio. House Needed to be debugged, cleaned better. Loved the separation of the bedrooms. Jeff was great to work with.

Needs some attention

  • 2 of 5

The best thing about the Brown Mountain Lodge was the location and the property. It is a beautiful piece of property on a stream with access to a trail with a waterfall and some great views.

However there are a number of problems with the house. It looked reasonably clean, but it needs some attention. The kitchen, while well stocked, was extremely cluttered. It was difficult to find a sharp knife in a drawer filled with them. Light bulbs in a variety of light fixtures were out, the microwave was broken, and a broken chair sat in the corner of the living room. The remote control to the TV did not work (we fortunately had some batteries to get it working). I called about the broken microwave as soon as we arrived, and while the owner was sympathetic, he could not fix the problem, and did not take any money off of our bill.

While we made the best of our stay, I doubt I would return.

Owner's Response: Sorry for the challenges Mark, I took up a variety of batteries this past week and put in a replacement microwave. On a holiday weekend replacing the microwave wasn't possible. I replaced the only light bulb I saw that was out. We do take feedback seriously and always are looking to improve. Thanks for staying with us.

Loved starting the day to the sound of the creek

  • 4 of 5

A peaceful get-a-way. We had coffee on the deck each morning and listened to the creek - a great way to start the day. The location is remote with travel on gravel roads to get to nearby towns. It took 45 minutes or more to get to Blowing Rock, Boone and Linville. Some roads were very narrow and winding. We ventured out every other day and it was a good balance of activity and inactivity. The guys took advantage of the TV every evening.

The Wilson Creek area was peaceful during the week. We hiked the trails near the property and took advantage of wading into the creek.

The amenities were as described and the property was clean and in good repair. We took advantage of the grill and the smoker. Communications with the owner, Jeff, were terrific with E-mails of directions and area information. If you are looking for a relaxing low-key vacation with hiking, fishing and similar activities, this is the place.

Awesome time!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from 4 days at the Brown Mountain Lodge. Our 3 boys , my husband and myself, really enjoyed the hiking trails behind the house and hiking up the creek. The boys caught trout from the trout pond at Betsy's store, and they were delicious. Our dog was exhausted from all of the hiking and just hanging out outside. The house is well stocked with everything you need, it is roomy and comfortable. We only left once, for a trip to grandfather mountain , which was a nice day trip. No need to leave the rest of the time. it was a really fun and relaxing spring break for our family.

We are located in the Wilson Creek Wild and Scenic River Gorge and Brown Mountain area within the Grandfather Mountain ranger district. The area was designated and is protected as a Wild and Scenic area in 2002, the river has delayed harvest and catch and keep fishing areas. Many locals and guests have spotted the mysterious Brown Mountain lights in the area. The BML is a pet friendly secluded luxury home with a covered deck overlooking a creek. Our property is 11 acres and is surrounded by Pisgah Nation forests with great hiking, biking, horseback trails right there. Boone, Blowing Rock, Linville Falls and Grandfather Mountain are 12-15 miles away by state maintained packed gravel roads. We have trails right there behind the house with views of Grandfather and a Waterfall. The big river is just down the road 1/2 mile and has 9+ miles of public access and parking.

Other Activities: swimming

Golf: Silver Creek Golf Club has spectacular views, greens and rates. $44 on weekends is impossible to beat.

Boone golf Club on our web site is another great option.

Ski: We love Sugar Mountain and Ski Beech both are about 50-60 min ride from the lodge. App Ski Mtn is about 45- 50 min to the slopes.
