About Jeff Shook
The original owners had incredible vision even back in the 50's to build such a unique and beautiful home they called 'The Hideaway'. They constructed a 12 ft steel water wheel down on the creek that was beautiful. When we bought the home we wanted to restore the property and water wheel to its grandeur and make it even better to share with folks that love the mountains. My wife and I invite you to experience the vacation cabin rental that you will always remember the good times with your family. We re-named the hideaway to the Brown Mountain Lodge. Our goal is to provide one of the best family oriented vacation and cabin rentals in the Boone and Blowing Rock NC area. In 2007 I wrote a true short ghost story about the adventures my brother and I have experienced in the Brown Mountain Area. The book is a collection of and titled '13 Terrifying Tales from the North Carolina Piedmont'. A copy of the book and pictures to document my tales as well as other books about the area are in the Lodge for your reading pleasure around the campfire. This book is published by Lorimer Press and is available at Barnes and Noble and other bookstores in the region.
Jeff Shook purchased this House in 2000
Why Jeff Shook chose Wilson Creek
We admired and dreamed about owning this home as a kids and when the opportunity presented itself we made it happen. The Brown Mountain area and Wilson Creek Gorge is off the beaten path and has been undiscovered for years. People are finding out about it now since the River was designated a Wild and Scenic River in 2004. If your looking for a private paradise pet friendly vacation home in a secluded Mountain setting with beautiful streams, waterfalls and River Gorge then you just found it.
What makes this House unique

Family Vacation Getaway
We throughly enjoyed our family vacation getaway. The owner was a pleasure to work with and very helpful!! The description is accurate regarding the location, layout and amenities, although there are only showers, no bathtubs in the bathrooms. The house is a "rustic cabin in the mountains", adjacent to Wilson's creek, accessed by a long gravel road that runs along the creek. The property was clean, well-maintained and well furnished with kitchen appliances. We loved the deck, the waterfall and the swimming spot. My husband and 7-year old son even went for a short swim. My son was a bit disappointed that the water-wheel was not working, but it was completely forgotten when he realized that he could play darts and horse-shoes. There is even a tree-swing that my husband and brother-in-law both thought was great. There is plenty of room to run around, and although the steps down from the deck to the water are steep, there is a much gentler slope if you go around the house. We enjoyed hiking the trail behind the house that goes to a small waterfall and to a lookout for Grandfather Mountain. (If you are desperate for cell phone service, my husband was able to access it on the trail up near the lookout spot!) We also hiked to Betsy's Country store. The gentleman there gave us other great places nearby where we could go hiking. It was a very relaxing vacation. Thanks, Mr. Jeff!!
Thank you for taking time to review our property! We just upgraded the down stairs TV to 32" with built in dvd and added a new DTV receiver to try to eliminate some remotes and added a new washer. Earlier this spring we updated the tile and fixures in the downstairs bathroom and replaced the front door with a prettier door. Basically we're constantly trying to find ways to make our home more inviting, fun and family friendly. We just added 25'X175' pond that the frogs have taken to and I put some creek minnows in there but we've got a kingfisher that's been hanging out so I believe they are gone already. I may put a few trout in there to see if they can make it. The water wheel is still on my to do list. Thanks again.
Great location, close to river, privacy and nature
Second time staying at BML, the location and set up was perfect for our annual fishing trip. Everyone had a great time, we especially enjoy the covered deck and fireplace. We will be book again in the future.
Wonderful rustic stay with excellent hiking
We had a great stay the week after xmas, very cold but loved the wood stove and all the hiking right on the property. We only left once to go to Boone. We listened to other viewers and planned all our meals and shopped before we got there, don't forget the condiments and spices you want. The wood supplier Jeff recommends was awesome! They cut wood into smaller pieces for us to fit the wood stove better.
The property is in a great location, with a small river right outside your front door
While the property location was nice, we lost hot water for a day and a half when it seems like the pipes froze during this crazy winter storm that came through. There are plenty of space heaters in the house so it was easy to stay warm. It has a great porch with a nice outside fire place.
Thanks for review, sorry for the challenges on plumbing. Today at my home the power knocked off and with the sustained cold the hot water line froze and we lost hot water for a few hours ourselves. Hopefully that idea I had remedied the situation. Coming from Fla ya'll probably enjoyed the cold but were glad to get back to normal temps......this cold spell was a big one. thanks again for staying with us!
We really enjoyed our stay- lots to explore without ever leaving the place. Beautiful streams and pond. My dogs loved it! We had a nice quiet Christmas there. The house is a bit eclectic and we liked it very much, beds are pretty comfortable and appliances are easy to operate. My only suggestion would be that the main house could use a bit of a deep clean and a little organization/decluttering in the kitchen cabinets but these are only observations and nothing that creates hesitation in staying there again. The covered deck and outdoor fireplace are really nice and I can only imagine that a summer retreat here would be awesome.
Will def be back. Secluded but not really...
We loved the feel of isolation. You are surrounded by people of like mind. Totally happy being off the beaten path yet close to anything you needed within 10 miles. There even was a concert at Betsie's store. We played by waterfalls on property. Swam at the beach twice with sweet friendly kids and adults. Fished at 2 different places. There's no limit to fishing spots. Hiked up the trail right behind the house. Ate s'mores. Had burgers and donuts, spaghetti night and picnic at river. Full pkg of cable at night. Everything we needed was there. Big firepit in yard we didnt use regretfully. Next time!! Friends could bring tent and pitch it in yard. Huge place.
thank you....this place has been like our secret getaway for years! thanks for staying with us!!!!
We are located in the Wilson Creek Wild and Scenic River Gorge and Brown Mountain area within the Grandfather Mountain ranger district. The area was designated and is protected as a Wild and Scenic area in 2002, the river has delayed harvest and catch and keep fishing areas. Many locals and guests have spotted the mysterious Brown Mountain lights in the area. The BML is a pet friendly secluded luxury home with a covered deck overlooking a creek. Our property is 11 acres and is surrounded by Pisgah Nation forests with great hiking, biking, horseback trails right there. Boone, Blowing Rock, Linville Falls and Grandfather Mountain are 12-15 miles away by state maintained packed gravel roads. We have trails right there behind the house with views of Grandfather and a Waterfall. The big river is just down the road 1/2 mile and has 9+ miles of public access and parking. Other Activities: swimming Golf: Silver Creek Golf Club has spectacular views, greens and rates. $44 on weekends is impossible to beat. Boone golf Club on our web site is another great option. Ski: We love Sugar Mountain and Ski Beech both are about 50-60 min ride from the lodge. App Ski Mtn is about 45- 50 min to the slopes.
