About Jeff Shook

The original owners had incredible vision even back in the 50's to build such a unique and beautiful home they called 'The Hideaway'. They constructed a 12 ft steel water wheel down on the creek that was beautiful. When we bought the home we wanted to restore the property and water wheel to its grandeur and make it even better to share with folks that love the mountains. My wife and I invite you to experience the vacation cabin rental that you will always remember the good times with your family. We re-named the hideaway to the Brown Mountain Lodge. Our goal is to provide one of the best family oriented vacation and cabin rentals in the Boone and Blowing Rock NC area.

In 2007 I wrote a true short ghost story about the adventures my brother and I have experienced in the Brown Mountain Area. The book is a collection of and titled '13 Terrifying Tales from the North Carolina Piedmont'. A copy of the book and pictures to document my tales as well as other books about the area are in the Lodge for your reading pleasure around the campfire. This book is published by Lorimer Press and is available at Barnes and Noble and other bookstores in the region.

Jeff Shook purchased this house in 2000

Why Jeff Shook chose Collettsville

We admired and dreamed about owning this home as a kids and when the opportunity presented itself we made it happen. The Brown Mountain area and Wilson Creek Gorge is off the beaten path and has been undiscovered for years. People are finding out about it now since the River was designated a Wild and Scenic River in 2004. If your looking for a private paradise pet friendly vacation home in a secluded Mountain setting with beautiful streams, waterfalls and River Gorge then you just found it.

What makes this house unique

BML is a multi level home with 3 BR's, the living area and kitchen are comfy and set up for family fun and enjoying the home. We have WiFi and HiDef TV for staying connected with the world. Guests really enjoy our outdoor living area with fireplace, grills and swings that looks over the creek. Right up behind the house are terrific trails that we have views of on our web site.

Family Vacation Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We throughly enjoyed our family vacation getaway. The owner was a pleasure to work with and very helpful!! The description is accurate regarding the location, layout and amenities, although there are only showers, no bathtubs in the bathrooms. The house is a "rustic cabin in the mountains", adjacent to Wilson's creek, accessed by a long gravel road that runs along the creek. The property was clean, well-maintained and well furnished with kitchen appliances. We loved the deck, the waterfall and the swimming spot. My husband and 7-year old son even went for a short swim. My son was a bit disappointed that the water-wheel was not working, but it was completely forgotten when he realized that he could play darts and horse-shoes. There is even a tree-swing that my husband and brother-in-law both thought was great. There is plenty of room to run around, and although the steps down from the deck to the water are steep, there is a much gentler slope if you go around the house. We enjoyed hiking the trail behind the house that goes to a small waterfall and to a lookout for Grandfather Mountain. (If you are desperate for cell phone service, my husband was able to access it on the trail up near the lookout spot!) We also hiked to Betsy's Country store. The gentleman there gave us other great places nearby where we could go hiking. It was a very relaxing vacation. Thanks, Mr. Jeff!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking time to review our property! We just upgraded the down stairs TV to 32" with built in dvd and added a new DTV receiver to try to eliminate some remotes and added a new washer. Earlier this spring we updated the tile and fixures in the downstairs bathroom and replaced the front door with a prettier door. Basically we're constantly trying to find ways to make our home more inviting, fun and family friendly. We just added 25'X175' pond that the frogs have taken to and I put some creek minnows in there but we've got a kingfisher that's been hanging out so I believe they are gone already. I may put a few trout in there to see if they can make it. The water wheel is still on my to do list. Thanks again.

Will def be back. Secluded but not really...

  • 5 of 5

We loved the feel of isolation. You are surrounded by people of like mind. Totally happy being off the beaten path yet close to anything you needed within 10 miles. There even was a concert at Betsie's store. We played by waterfalls on property. Swam at the beach twice with sweet friendly kids and adults. Fished at 2 different places. There's no limit to fishing spots. Hiked up the trail right behind the house. Ate s'mores. Had burgers and donuts, spaghetti night and picnic at river. Full pkg of cable at night. Everything we needed was there. Big firepit in yard we didnt use regretfully. Next time!! Friends could bring tent and pitch it in yard. Huge place.

Great Get away weekend!

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our weekend stay at BML. Great hiking trails and the boys loved sliding down the falls into the swimming pools. Wilson Creek has lots of fishing holes! The house was great and provided everything we needed. The only thing is very isolated and very hard to locate. Do not try to use GPS... definitely need to follow the written directions given! Buy everything you need before you get to the house...food and fishing bait! There is WIFI but no cell service, but there is a land line at the home! Thanks Jeff for a great weekend!

Beautiful house and property...just a few kinks.

  • 3 of 5

My husband and I and our 4 kids stayed at BML for a week in July, 2017. We had a wonderful time hiking around and swimming in the beautiful Wilson Creek. I will tell you this...they are NOT kidding when they say haul ALL your groceries in with you! It is a good solid 50 minutes to the nearest grocery store and we found that Betsy's store really only had a few little things like candy and ice cream and a few crackers. They did NOT have basic essentials. Fortunately, I listened and brought everything in with us. Now...with that being said...there wasn't a lot of storage room for enough groceries for 6 people for one week. ALL the cabinets in the kitchen were FULL. And while that meant the kitchen was well-stocked with needed things such as pots, pans, and plates, etc. - it meant that we had to keep all our cereal boxes, chips and crackers, etc. piled on the island table in the middle of the kitchen. Not a real big deal but an easily fixable issue by the owners just cleaning out some cabinet space. One cabinet was filled with VERY unappealing things like Rat Bait, ant and roach spray, etc. It was good to have those things but they seemed to just be tossed in there all askew and it was just a "turn-off" every time I opened that cabinet by accident.

We also had a couple of issues when we arrived - in that the instructions to get into the main gate at the road were not included in the information that we printed out. It said they were on Page 2 but there was no Page 2 included. Thus, we had to shimmy around the gate and walk to the main house and call Mr. Shook for instructions (because you will NOT have cell phone service). It took him a while to call back. Then later that evening the Security alarm started beeping VERY loudly and would NOT stop (and we had NOT touched it!). It took Mr. Shook 2 hours to call me back and tell me how to make it stop beeping. I think on a day that someone is arriving - Mr. Shook should keep his phone on him at all times in case of problems like these. The other unsettling issue we had is that 2 nights the power went off in the middle of the night for hours. I'm sure that was probably something that was out of Mr. Shook's control.

All in all we had a great time and the house was very beautiful and we found it to be clean. The kids LOVED the dart board under the covered porch and we used the AWESOME fire pit to roast hot dogs and marshmallows 2 nights! So there were pros and cons to staying there.

Owner's Response: Hi Mary Lynn: Thank you for the input, I definitely take the input seriously so I'll go thru the cabinets and re organize those. I re uploaded gate instructions to go out with the rest of the welcome kit so hopefully that'll never happen again, again sorry for the hassle. The alarm has never done that so I have no idea what that was about. I'm monitoring it to see if it happens again but hasn't so far. Thanks have a great rest of your summer! Thanks again for staying with us.

Loved this roomy, rustic, quirky place. The proximity to the river and the land is a little slice of Heaven. We didn't want to leave. Our family definitely needed this vacation with nature. Thank you for sharing your home.

We are located in the Wilson Creek Wild and Scenic River Gorge and Brown Mountain area within the Grandfather Mountain ranger district. The area was designated and is protected as a Wild and Scenic area in 2002, the river has delayed harvest and catch and keep fishing areas. Many locals and guests have spotted the mysterious Brown Mountain lights in the area. The BML is a pet friendly secluded luxury home with a covered deck overlooking a creek. Our property is 11 acres and is surrounded by Pisgah Nation forests with great hiking, biking, horseback trails right there. Boone, Blowing Rock, Linville Falls and Grandfather Mountain are 12-15 miles away by state maintained packed gravel roads.
