Arenal (also called 'Nuevo Arenal') is in a less visited area of Costa Rica, between the towns of Tilaran and La Fortuna. Within easy reach are the Hanging Bridges of Arenal, Lake Arenal (windsurfing, sailing, jet-skiing, fishing), an Eco-Lodge (bird-watching, rainforest trails, hiking, horseback riding), boat trips to Monteverde, white-water rafting, canopy tours and rappelling. The amenities of both towns as well as the world-famous Tabacon Resort and Arenal Volcano lie within less than 45 minutes easy drive.
You have the best of both worlds - a secluded, beautiful and quiet paradise with all the amenities within easy reach. What is more, in Nuevo Arenal, we enjoy the perfect climate of 80ºF during the day and 65ºF in the evening, with a soft, refreshing breeze all day long.
This beautiful detached bungalow sits in its own gated grounds, complete with gardened terraces, private pool, and sweeping views of tropical rainforest jungle, Lake Arenal, and the hills of Monteverde beyond. You literally wake up to the sound of Howler Monkeys and Toucans every morning! You can linger in our pool, take a pleasant walk on our garden terraces or in the jungle beyond, or be more adventurous with the dozens of activities offered in La Fortuna, a short drive away.
In the evening, you might try one of our many restaurants nearby (the world-class 'Gingerbread' restaurant is within easy reach, and also nearby is the famous 'Caballo Negro'), or enjoy a romantic dinner at home in the seclusion of your own private mahogany-furnished dining room, as you watch the sun setting over the lake.
Our private property is perfect for couples, each of our three bedrooms having its own self-contained bathroom. You have access to the world with free WiFi Internet, telephone, fax and photocopier, computer with printer, and SKY satellite TV. There is also an impressive collection of DVD movies and an extensive library with books on local travel, cuisine, nature and history.
While many of our guests do enjoy all that the area has to offer, many choose to spend an entire week languishing by the pool, enjoying our beautiful gardens, lake/jungle view, local wildlife, birdwatching, hiking, horseback riding, or just sleeping-in!

Kathleen Grove purchased this house in 1995
The location is simply stunning; we are on the bank of Lake Arenal facing south, with towering trees to the sides and back of the property to give total privacy, yet the house is located in a gated community with good neighbors only a few moments away. Shopping and excellent restaurants are only a few short minutes' drive from Neuvo Arenal, and the area is rich in activities including zip-lining, horseback riding, white water rafting, hiking and fishing. Sometimes the nicest day of our stay is when we choose to relax at the house and watch the myriad of beautiful birds that come to our feeders, listen to the wild parrots as they fly overhead, try to spot the howler monkeys and just let the day flow by as we relax on the covered deck and enjoy the freshest air we have ever found anywhere.
My husband, my one year old son and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Casa Gavilan. The house has EVERYTHING you would need - especially in the kitchen. It is very clean, spacious, quiet and just 5km from Nuevo Arenal. Highlights for us included: howler monkeys in the trees beside the house, the wide variety of birds, the excellent resource library, El Establo (the local soda), learning to windsurf and kite board on the lake with the company Tico Wind, the hanging bridges hike, finding a free spot to enjoy the hotsprings with local Ticos and the waterfalls hike outside of Tilaran. We love to speak spanish and found many opportunities to use it in the local towns: Nuevo Arenal, Tilaran and Canas. The family at El Establo is lovely - we ate there all the time and really enjoyed their company. The guest book and bird book at the house were very interesting as well - we completely forgot to write in them! We are also grateful that there was a telephone. There is a nice little hike to a pond that you can do around the property through the rainforest as well. Thanks so much for a great vacation!
We can"t say enough about how much we enjoyed this property and the kind attention from Ed (The property manager). The comfort of the house and the well equipped kitchen are without equal. We were thrilled by the great birdwatching (saw at least 20 different types) right from the terrace. The cabana and pool area are landscaped and very well maintained with beautiful tropical plants and flowers. We especially enjoyed the mini library with travel and wildlife reference books. We were very near to Nueva Arenal with nice stores and good restaurants. The location of this home is very convenient to La Fortuna and a few hours from Santa Elena. We recommend this lovely property and would love to return.
My wife and I chose Casa Gavilan as a launching point for our 4 days in Arenal (and first stay ever in Costa Rica). We wanted a place that would accommodate the two of us and our three teen-aged boys comfortably, be accessible to Arenal and all the surrounding activities and then be there for a quite place to enjoy our evenings. Casa Gavilan delivered!
We flew into LIR and drove the 2 hours to Casa Gavilan. We were greeted by Ed, the Property Manager. Ed (even though he went to Duke) was quite kind and very helpful in getting us acquainted with the house, the property, where to go for things in Nuevo Arenal and what outfits to use for our activities while in the area. Ed connected us to Chef Jeff, who, on short notice (our fault), came to the house our first night, prepared a wonderful dinner for all of us and made us feel that much more comfortable. Ed even helped me manage a slightly sticky parking situation I got into with a local establishment.
Casa Gavilan is situated about 1 mile from the main road circling the Lake in a very well established neighborhood with similar houses called Las Flores. The lots are all large enough to provide plenty of personal privacy. The house was plenty spacious and had all of the conveniences we needed. The pool was a great hit on the first night, as were the many species of local birds that frequented the property. Agree with other reviewers that the pictures don't do the property justice. We would have enjoyed a larger view of the lake, but that didn't detract from our stay in any way (first world problem :-)).
Downtown Nuevo Arenal is about a ten minute drive from the house. The main activities of the larger Arenal area -- various hot springs, Arenal volcano park, hanging bridges, ziplining, etc are all a 30-45 minute drive from the house. For our taste and preferences, we were very happy to have chosen Casa Gavilan and the 30-45 minute drive compared to staying in hotels/etc that were embedded in the Arenal activity area.
Wonderful property, Ed's top notch service and being close enough to all that Arenal has to offer while having a quite place to call home for a few days are why I recommend Casa Gavilan to you!
We've had many trips to Costa Rica and this property is one of our favorites. Initial booking and communication was excellent and friendly. Ed, the Property Manager was great on our arrival and was very helpful in getting us settled away. A nice touch is the extra supplies that were available and the house is very well equipped. This is a great location as it is very quiet and the Las Flores community is very well maintained. Morning coffee watching the birds was a treat and we enjoyed several evening meals on the patio. There were 5 of us on this trip and the house was comfortable and spacious. The local artwork and very well stocked library were also very enjoyable. Overall this is a very well maintained and managed property and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Recommended local restaurants include Las Tijanas, Gingerbread and Moya's Place all of which are well worth a visit. There is a very nice walk around the property by the pond that is great for spotting some of the local birds and frogs. Don't hesitate to book this property.
Casa Gavilan ranks TOPS on m VBRO rental experiences. This property is gorgeous. The pictures do not do it justice. Ed was so helpful. We were delayed arriving which caught us having to drive the windy roads at dark, nerve racking. Ed met us along the road and guided us in. He also had us the essentials for breakfast and feeding the birds, our favorite activity.
As I said the house is amazing, superior decor, extremely clean, wonderful landscaping and views. The wildlife kept us entertained. I think our biggest food expense was fresh fruit, for us and the birds.
The Arenal location is a little off the beaten path, perfect for R&R. We stayed for three weeks, took on 2-3 adventures a week. Otherwise we stayed at "home" relaxing at the pool, walking the neighborhood trail, or maybe a trip to town for bite to eat and an Imperial beer. Locals are so friendly. Definitely eat at Moya`s and hang at Karacters. Pick up some homemade yogurt or cheese at El Estatblo. Our faves were back 142 towards Tillaran, La Rana is less than 2 km for breakfast and dinner, love Mr. Riner. The food is very good and he feeds the birds by hand. Further down the road is Casa Delagua for breakfast and lunch.
We booked most of our activities through Los Camps in La Fortuna. They are associated with Los Lagos Hotel and Spa next door, with every booked activity you get a free pass to the Hotel pools, springs, restaurants and bars. That felt great after the Sky Trek zipping.
I could go on forever. We'll be back.
This was our 8th trip to Costa Rica and this is the nicest place we have ever stayed. The house was beautifully furnished, we especially loved the beautiful prints of frogs above the couch in the living room! It immediately made us feel like we were in the tropics!
The kitchen was the best stocked kitchen I have ever seen in a vacation rental. The use of a cell phone while we were there was also a nice touch.
It was still pretty rainy and cool when we were there so didn't use the pool much, but it looked really inviting. The only drawback for us was no rail to hold on to getting in and a bit difficult if you are elderly or disabled which my husband is.
We did have problems with the internet, the listing says there is a computer there, but unfortunately it was not usable and I only brought my tablet. The wifi was just not strong enough for my tablet most of the time so it would time out if I tried to go most places on the internet... i.e. online banking. Next time I will bring my laptop as it does have ethernet access to plug into. I think that would be fine.
Overall our time there was amazing! The property manager Ed is exceptional! We will definately be back!
We stayed 4 nights with two other couples and had a perfect time. The house is well-furnished - and lovely as well. The owners, along with the property manager, Ed, have thought of all the details to make the stay as comfortable and easy as possible. There's plenty to do in the area, of course, but one of our favorite activities was going horseback riding just up the street. Apparently, we encountered more rain, clouds, and wind than usual at this time of year, but it wasn't cold and didn't dampen our activities very much. Ed is really helpful and was a joy to talk with. Also, we wanted to have dinners cooked for us, and Ed put me in touch with another expat, Jeff, who is a former chef. Jeff, and a friend of his, Elizabeth (from Panama), cooked absolutely spectacular dishes, with a Central American flair. They were friendly and helpful, going out of their way to plan and prepare menus that we won't forget for a long time. To show our appreciation, we insisted that, on our last night there, they sit at table with us for dinner too.
This property is near the small, quiet town of Nuevo Arenal, within easy reach of Tabacon Hot Springs, the Hanging Bridges, the Aerial CanopyTram, and the ever active Arenal Volcano. The Pacific beaches such as Tamarindo, Flamingo, Coco, and Papagayo are 2 hrs away, and the Liberia airport is 1 1/2 hrs. Monteverde Cloud Forest and Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge are just a couple of hours away.
