Looking to get away to the mountains with your family? Tatonka Lodge is the perfect choice for large families, or groups, traveling together!
Our custom log home sits on a private 65 acre buffalo ranch. Enjoy viewing our buffalo when you drive in or stop by in the morning at feeding time! The cabin was completed in early 2008 and is over 3500 square feet, plenty of room for everyone to spread out. So, whether you are looking to hit the slopes at Cataloochee Ski Resort in Maggie Valley (only 12 miles away) or visit the Biltmore Estate in Asheville (only 30 minutes), there is plenty for everyone to do in The Great Smoky Mountains!
Tatonka Lodge, (Indian word for buffalo), is ideal for large families vacationing together because we have 2 master suites which each have private doors leading to the back deck with a fantastic mountain view.
Once inside, you will be in awe of the huge stone fireplace in the great room, surrounded by plenty of seating area for a large group. Also, rest assured the children will be well entertained downstairs in the game room where we have a life size chess set, pool table, air hockey, ping pong & foosball. Also enjoy an evening in our 8 person hot tub out back!
Children will love the hike through the woods to the brand new play area, The BC Corral! This custom designed area has everything from swings, zip line, slides, teeter totter, cargo nets, rock wall & even a horse shoe pit for the adults! The kids will love it here!
If you are looking for a quiet 'get away from it all' retreat, this is it! Enjoy long hikes on the property, fishing on the Pigeon River (within walking distance from the log cabin) or take a trip into town to do some shopping or antiquing.

My brothers & my husband had shared a vision of expanding my fathers buffalo ranch when additional property became available to purchase. With all our knowledge & experiences combine we have built 3 log homes & have been renting them out since 2004. All the furniture in this cabin has been handmade by the wood on the property! Even the covered wagon bed, that was custom built my my father. Once my husband retires from the US Army in about 8 yrs our dream will be to build our log cabin on the property & be more hands on. God has blessed us beyond our wildest dreams. We hope you love the mountains like we have all come to love being transplants from a very flat NY!
Cheryl Hillis purchased this cabin in 2008
While staying at Tatonka Lodge we feel you will really enjoy the peace & tranquility of being secluded on 65 acres. So many of our previous guest have wrote back & told us they had all these plans to sight see but then just loved hanging out in the cabin together enjoying the big game room & the children all love the uniquely designed playground as well as seeing the miniature horse, buffalo, goats & llamas.
very nice cabin in the middle of the wild, but close to the slopes and the fun. very comfortable and equipped with everything needed. We had a wonderful time visiting your cabin. It had everything we needed and wanted with an amazing view. We had young kids with us and they were entertained with all the games and toys you had available to us in the basement. The only downside was the basement bedroom with the double bed was near the water pump and there was a loud noise anytime someone used the water. Other than that it was a perfect place to stay!!
We all enjoyed the Great Buffalo Creek vacation
There's so much to say, I hope I can get it all in. We just returned yesterday from three days at Tatonka Lodge - it was incredible! Preparation for the trip and all of the information necessary to get there was very helpful; Cheryl was amazingly responsive to every call and email. We were there with our grown children and grandchildren ages 8 mo, 3, 6 and 8 and we had a blast! The weather was extraordinarily warm so we didn't get the chance to enjoy a fire but we will be back so will get to do that next time. We all enjoyed being outside - the workout/hiking trail to the tether ball area and the playground was alot of fun! The cabin is beautiful and we felt right at home from the minute we arrived. We loved the game room! The kids slept on the futons in the loft and loved it! The beds were comfortable and even with everyone there, we had plenty of space inside and out places for quiet moments. The view from and around the property is breathtaking. The kids enjoyed seeing the llama, buffalo, goats, rabbits, horses and ponies! We also enjoyed sitting out on the deck. The location of the hot tub is perfect for enjoying the view or enjoying a beautiful starry night! It was an amazing 3 days and everyone is in agreement that we would like to make this a family tradition. We met Stevie and Jacob (?) who were working hard on the farm I'm sure making more incredible spaces. They were so NICE and helpful and we were able to convince them to return for lunch to enjoy some homemade vegetable soup. We enjoyed their company. It was also nice to see pictures of the building process. Amazing work! Congratulations to all that contributed and continue to work so hard. Guess I'd better comment on the driveway. The lower section of the driveway had just been paved making that first hill much easier. I'm glad that I didn't have to drive but I'm a nervous driver :( No one else in our party had any trouble (we were driving a truck, and 3 SUVs). Just be prepared for a steep steady climb but once there, it is SO WORTH IT! You'll be in heaven on top of the mountain! Thank you Cheryl for your responsiveness. We will be back......... and can't wait!
We stayed at Tatonka Lodge with 6 children, 4 adults and a few dogs. There was plenty of space and activities for everyone. The property and owners were above what we expected. We would definitely come back.
Our family had a wonderful time staying in Tatonka lodge. The home is beautiful and has everything you need. We had 10 people ages 11- 70+ and everyone enjoyed it! There was plenty of space for everyone and the game room was especially nice and used by everyone! We enjoyed the hot tub daily and the fire pit one night to make s’mores (a nice added touch to have that as a welcome basket). We enjoyed the hiking the trails and the bison feedings several morning. Cheryl and her family are the nicest people and very helpful. The driveway was our only negative. The location of the house is perfect for daily outings to Asheville, Cherokee, Maggie Valley, Lake Junaluska, and Black Mountain. I would recommend staying at this house, just be ready for the driveway. If the driveway was paved all the way up it would be fine.
From the moment we arrived we were in awe of Tatonka Lodge! It was breathtaking...we walked in & was happy to see the Smor'es basket since we forgot to pick up marshmallows!! The cabin was the best stocked cabin that we have ever stay in!! Plus all teh amenities as well as the animals...what more can you ask for! It was so cool to see the new bison calves that were only 3 weeks old! Everyone we met were so friendly, it was like they actually liked being there...we will definitely be back & will tell our friends.
