Why Paula Uusitalo chose Kapoho
We purchased the land in 1984, built the house in two phases, 1992 and 1998. It was wonderful to be able to raise the kids there during the years before high school. Swimming in Champagne Pond and quiet community was wonderful.

What a great escape! If you love to be near the
water and love to snorkel and explore, come on and
stay at this wonderful house.
The best snorkeling on the Big Island is here with
the Champagne Pond two blocks away and a view
from the deck like nothing other in the early
morning and at night. Stars for days and days to be
a star in this great retreat. If you like remote, this is
for you. Pahoa, which is about 20 mins away has
some great restaurants and a cash only market and
a great natural foods store. This place is changing
like crazy, so get there before the natural life is all
lost. Last 'real' Hawaii is here.
The conservation area, which is a short walk or
drive, is spectacular with snorkeling pools of
splendor. Coral and sealife everywhere.
Watch the tides so you know when to see the sea
turtles in the Champagne Pond. They come and go
with the high tide.
You'll sleep like a baby here, with the winds and
rain that happen to pass in the evening and early
Too splendid for your get away. Enjoy.
Good location, rustic getaway
My construction crew of two and I enjoyed our stay. The beds were comfortable and the house was clean. Quiet, secure neighborhood. Bathrooms offer little privacy as they are adjacent to kitchen, dining, and living room with open ceilings and slatted bi-fold doors. Kitchen utensils were useful. It’s definitely a rustic home; with nice fir interior paneling and post-to-beam Construction. Plenty of light and a large upper lanai for outdoor entertainment. Bring charcoal for the BBQ! Neighbors are close but privacy is adequate.
Great location and clean
This is a great property for a couple or a family. May be a bit problematic for multiple couples due to the lack of bathroom privacy. The bathroom walls do not go the ceiling and is in the middle of the home.
Thank you, you two told me you really enjoyed your stay, so it is interesting that you would comment when there were only two of you there regarding the bathrooms. As stated earlier, we have considered closing it in, however with 15 years of vacation renting and only three complaints regarding the bathroom situation, the first one from a family with teenage boys, most people are outside, or enjoying themselves otherwise. We have had numerous repeat renters, and many double or three generations with no complaints, just returning later. Thank you for enjoying our home!
Wonderful place to stay in Kapoho Beach Lots
We loved staying at Paula's house! We were a group of 6, and had plenty of room. It was very easy to communicate with Paula and to arrange check-in. The house itself is super convenient to Champagne Pond, but tucked up on a slope and very private. We liked the house particularly because it was so open and quiet and simple: no overdone loud "Hawaiian" decor! The huge deck was fantastic! Our only suggestion would be blinds or shades for the sliding doors to keep the house cooler during the day, and solid doors on the bathrooms- it's a bit awkward to be more or less open to the living room while in both bathrooms. Otherwise, it was a great stay- falling asleep to the breeze and the coqui frogs at night is pure bliss! Thank you for a lovely stay Paula!
It was a pleasure to meet all of you, and very happy you enjoyed your stay, our home, the privacy, Champagne Pond and all, thank you much! Yes, the bathrooms, it is open air, when we built back in the ancient days, it turned out the way it is, and we have considered changing. After 15 years of vacation renting, with basically no complaints, most people do not worry about it, we have had numerous repeat vacationers over the years. Again, very happy you enjoyed your stay!
Beautiful vacation with the family!
I booked this house for my 'ohana visiting from California during the New Year's holiday. The house comfortably housed her family of 2 parents and 3 children. When we stayed over one night, me and partner had a large sofa bed to sleep on. Paula was a gracious host, who even met me at my work in Hilo to deliver the keys and instructions. The home comes with its own personal warm pond, which the kids loved! We drove to nearby Kapoho Tide Pools for a day of amazing snorkeling. Ideal vacation home for a family with kids, who are looking for safe swimming and snorkeling options.
Well kept. All the amenities were provided. The only problem was that the weather didn't cooperate.
At our home you can walk to the large warm tide pool 'Champagne Pond' and 'University Pond' for swimming/snorkeling, walking, jogging. A car is needed for the orchid farms, County public hot pond, Pahoa (8 miles), farmer's market, Volcano, Hilo & vicinity, active Kilauea volcano (Volcanoes National Park), waterfalls, tropical gardens, local entertainment & cultural shows, I'imiloa Astronomy Center, observatories, the mountains: Mauna Kea, with its observatories and Mauna Loa, much to see!
