7 Bedroom farmhouse and barn located in a tranquil setting in South Devon
Shizen is perfectly set up for a large group of 6-16 people, with 7 bedrooms and some extra sleeping options. The accommodation is divided into the main house with 4 of the bedrooms, 2 living rooms and a kitchen, and just steps away is the barn, with 2 ensuite bedrooms, a cinema/play room and a mezzanine sleeping area for up to 4 people. Plenty of bathrooms to go around, lots of space for everyone, and huge grounds for everyone to enjoy safely and off the road. Best of all, we have a luxurious outdoor kitchen in the garden, with dining space for everyone and space to relax
Guests may use nearly the entire property, including the house, the barn, outdoor kitchen and grounds. There is an open barn for rainy weather play, gardens and an orchard. Next to the house is a veg garden out of which we can provide meals for you, if you choose to have in-house catering.
Depending on availability and timing, I will greet you on your arrival to show you around, or else there is a lockbox with the key. If you choose to have housekeeping or cleaning, you will be seeing more of me!
We are in the lovely South Devon countryside between the villages of Broadhempston (2 pubs, village shop) and Woodland, close to the lovely towns of Ashburton and Totnes, and a short drive to Dartmoor or the coast. Our little neck of the woods is very quiet and safe, with plenty of space from the nearest neighbours, so feel free to spread out and enjoy!
A car is essential around these parts, as the nearest bus only runs to Broadhempston (25mins on foot). We have parking for 15 cars, so lots of room for everyone. For those not arriving by car, the nearest train stations are Newton Abbot and Totnes (around 2.5hrs direct from London).
Other things to note
This is a luxuriously converted farmhouse and barn. Perfect for groups of friends or extended families.

About Sanna Garton
We are a couple and a dog from the UK, currently mainly residing abroad, and dreaming of our beautiful home in Devon. While we are not there we hope that you may be able to enjoy it as much as we do.
Sanna Garton purchased this Farmhouse in 2014
Why Sanna Garton chose Broadhempston
Shizen lodge has a really special feel to it - in and out. It is nestled in its own land, surrounded by nature and birdsong, with the stream flowing nearby and fields and hedgerows to explore, yet only a short drive or slightly longer walk to Ashburton and Totnes, lovely towns with plenty to do, and positioned nicely between the wonderful and mysterious Dartmoor and the beautiful beaches of South Devon.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
What made Shizen lodge special for us was the moment we came down the drive realised we were in our own little patch of heaven.. green all around us, not a soul to be seen. There is a warm and welcoming feel from the moment you enter, and you actually feel guilty to the rooms you don't spend enough time in as they are all so inviting!

A beautifully appointed home with real character in one of the most unspoilt rural areas of England
The house has been recently redeveloped to a very high standard and is perfect for large parties (in both senses)
It’s down a labrynth of tiny Devon lanes in the most wonderful setting
Close to Dartmoor and road links to the M5. Great for walking the Tors and frequenting local pubs or as a family venue
Thank you for a lovely and helpful review, and for choosing us in the first place! It was great to meet you all and to hear that you had such a good time. Looking forward to seeing you again this time next year! Thanks again. x
We were a family of 10 adults, 6 children and 3 dogs enjoying an Easter 5 night break. Sanna was there upon arrival to show us around her beautiful home and was contactable throughout our stay ( though we had no problems with anything in the house/barn). We made use of all the bedrooms and 4 cousins particularly enjoyed the mezzanine level in the Barn area which they turned into a kids den. We ate in every evening and made use of the excellent kitchen facilities - everything you needed was there. ( a special mention also to the big green egg in the outdoor kitchen which made 16 pizzas for us on 1 night- super lovely) We also loved the homely feel to the 2 lounge areas and the wood burners were a treat in the rainy weather. Local area is great with some good walks directly from the house - we also visited Dartmoor National Park and the Coast for long doggy beach walks. Thanks Sanna - we are already planning our next visit back
A real home from home
Stayed at this property over xmas and the New Year with my 3 generational family and 5 dogs.
It was everything we were hoping for - beautiful property inside and out, without being too 'perfect' for me, with plenty of rural and quiet outside space for the dogs to play, but close enough to the South Hams beaches for day trips.
Very well equipped and large kitchen/diner/sitting for the 'chefs' to be able to work amongst the rest of the family without being in separate rooms, whilst the two sitting rooms were ideal for those of us who wanted quiet time to read/play games etc whilst others were watching TV
Needless to say, the boot room and the pantry provided exit doors which were perfect for the dogs to enter the house without bringing muddy paws into the main hallway and also areas for towelling them down.
The bedrooms, both in the main house and the converted barn were again just what was expected from the photos.
Contact with the owner for a couple of hiccups was immediate and resolved within a couple of hours.
As can probably be seen from my review, I fell in love with this property immediately and I will surely be back sometime soon.
Thank you so much Sanna - your property is a credit to you and your work over the past months.
Fantastic place for large groups
The farmhouse is finished to a high standard with all the amenities you would need for all weathers and all ages. The equipment throughout, especially in the kitchen is high quality and there is loads of it. It's peaceful and remote. Highly recommended.
Lovely and luxurious
We booked a last-minute winter trip to do a course at Dartington nearby. We wanted something pretty upscale and couldn't find too many options, so ended up choosing Pip, and were so glad we did! We only used a couple of the 4 bedrooms in the main house, but it was great to have the two living rooms, one of which has the most amazing woodburning stove.. who needs TV! The garden is great and I'd love to see what it's like in the summer. The sheep in the field close by said hello to us every morning! There were some building works going on in the barn which was being converted, but it didn't bother us as we were out during the day anyway. The area is great.. a real find. Quiet, in the middle of nature, and really close to Totnes and the A38, about 15-20mins to Dartmoor too. Highly recommended!
Amazing Location, Amazing hosts
We decided to travel to Shizen Lodge for a much needed weekend break from the city, and what a fantastic decision it was! Being well traveled and having high expectations we often find ourselves disappointed by poor furnishings and lack of attention to detail. We could not fault a single item in the home or the surrounding grounds, a perfect trip and one we hope to repeat many times in the future. 5 stars across the board.
Shizen Lodge is set in its own ground, but is closest to Ashburton, the gateway to Dartmoor. There is lots going on in the area, from the obvious attractions of Dartmoor and the South Devon coast, to antiques shops galore in Ashburton, organic food markets, the Riverford centre, the cultural centre and beautiful gardens of Dartington Hall, Totnes, and so on and so on.
