We are Janice and Tom Scott British couple from Yorkshire who after working many years in our chosen professions decided to retire to our holiday home in France and after a full renovation of our house and attached barn we finally had an area for family and friends to visit, however like most people we found that our lovely conversion was rarely used so after some further work ensuring all the rooms are en suite to provide the maximum comfort for our guests, we decided to open a small boutique b and b establishment so that other people could experience the lovely area we live in whilst staying in beautiful comfortable surroundings. When our children were younger we would spend all our holidays in France and visited for over 30 years before finally settling on a holiday home here. Our three grown up children and grandchildren still live in the UK one in York in our native county of Yorkshire, one in Buxton, Derbyshire and another in London, they consider that they have an affinity with France and enjoy there visits. I am sure our property will remain in our family for many generations as now our grandchildren love spending time here also.
Owner/Property Manager Janice and Tom Scott purchased this barn in 2002
Part of our property was built in 1840 the barn in 1650's and although neglected we fell in love with it as soon as we saw it, we had visited many areas in France but decided on the Charente because of the familiarity to the Yorkshire Dales and our tranquil setting between two beautiful villages, also an ideal base to visit many other areas of France. Our 1630 barn conversion was created five years ago when we came to live here on a permanently and it is ideally used for bed and breakfast because it provides guests with complete privacy and their own private lounge area which leads to a private entrance. The area we live in is the second sunniest area in France next to the Med, We feel our home is ideal for people who want a taste of the true French lifestyle in a beautiful area that is not overcrowded with holiday makers although the Parisians like to holiday in our area as they know and appreciate our little secret!!!. We have two wonderful villages on our doorstep Verteuil-sur-Charente with its fairy-tale Chateau, two beautiful cafe's next to the river a restaurant and gift shops as well as guided tours around the Chateau grounds and a boutique and Cave offering local delights for you to purchase, the Charente river runs through Verteuil and you can swim at an area close to the park. Nanteuil en vallee is a picture post card village with two great restaurants, Arboretum small museum and a wonderful old monastery were they often have attractions for you to visit, the Reliant just outside of Ruffec with canoeing, swimming, a great restaurant, or somewhere to relax and have a picnic next to the river, there are many farm tracks providing excellent areas to walk or bike. We love our home and our tranquil lifestyle in France and find it a real pleasure sharing our positive experience with others. The Charente is truly a wonderful place and we have learned to love this wonderful way of life living with our friendly French neighbours.
We fell in love with our area after visiting most of France and purchased our property after searching for over ten years, we feel it is perfect for walkers and nature lovers, you experience all the tranquility and peace of the countryside yet we are close to attractions and facilities, we are also near the N10 (5klms) so ideal for overnight traveler's travelling from England to Spain as we are roughly half way and only seven and half hours from Calais, However we are also perfect for those people that want a holiday that is close to nature and want to experience a true taste of French lifestyle, also good for the people who want a base so they can visit the coast taking in La Rochelle, Royan or the wonderful island of ile de re. Maybe then visit the Dordogne (Brantome with its wonderful Monastery, caves and pavement cafe's) and the South Loire to visit towns like Saumur and Montreuil-Bellay with their lovely Chateaus and wine tasting., Limoges for the potteries or Poitiers with its Futurescope. Angouleme with its wonderful car ralley in August, you can experience all this without having to move hotels. You can see the chateau at Verteuil from our residents lounge and walk on the pathways to Verteuil or Nanteuil, Or you can simply relax sitting on our sun terrace overlooking open countryside .
