My stone cottage is 10 minutes walk from the Cheviot National Park, and on the St Cuthbert's Way long distance footpath. In a large village it is close to the high street with a post office, 2 banks, a supermarket and several pubs and restaurants. Handy for touring the Scottish Borders as well as the Northumberland coast and Roman wall attractions.
The house itself has two bedrooms with a double bed in each, and a folding single bed in the bigger room. The kitchen boasts a new gas boiler for central heating, new fridges and gas cooker, and is fully equipped for self-catering. A gas fire in the living room boosts the heating in colder weather. The back garden is quiet, with views over the hills and there is off road parking. Plenty of guidebooks and maps await the explorer, whether on foot or in car, with TV to catch up with news and entertainment back at base.
Sheets and towels are provided, and the key person, who lives locally, can be contacted for further needs and information, and if bread and milk are needed on arrival.
Wooler is real walking country, and you can walk the Northern Cheviots on some days without meeting another human being, although, as my son has pointed out, the sheep more than make up for this! The Berwickshire coastal path is a jewel, with dramatic cliffs at St Abbs Head, and romantic Fast Castle, and another longdistance path is the Border Abbeys way, taking in Kelso, Jedburgh and Dryburgh.
For the historian and archaeologist, Northumberland shows vivid and tangible signs of the pre-historic, and then the Celtic, Roman and Anglo-Saxon imprints on its soil. The Border wars, with Flodden and the Border Reivers, immortalised in prose and poem of Walter Scott, are a further story to explore. Scott's home at Abbotsford, Scotland,a 30 mile drive, has to be seen, but so has Alnwick Castle, only 16 miles away, home to the Duke of Northumberland, and once home of Harry Hotspur, of Henry the IV Shakespearian fame. And Cragside, 19th Century stately home of Lord Armstrong, founder of Armstrongs shipyards, the first large house to run on hydro-electricity only 20 miles away, is an excellent rainy day visit. Holy Island is even nearer, at only 15 miles, with a tidal crossing to make it a dramatic visit.
Bird and nature lovers are catered for with walks and excursions organised locally. I have seen plenty of red squirrels here, but am still hoping for sight of otters, which require an early start!
The Cheviot Centre, housing the Tourist Office, organises many walks and outings, as well as promoting local business and industry.
Fantastic cottage in a great location and incredible neighbours. Very comfortable and welcoming. Great for walking especially st Cuthbert's way and in a good location for exploring.Northumberland.
The cottage had everything we needed and more. lovely town ideal for visiting Northumberland and the Borders. So much to see! The Farne Island for the Puffins and Seals and sea birds. Alnwick Gardens so beautiful. All the village, a week was not enough.
The house has a real character to it and is perfectly situated in Wooler. It proved an excellent base for walking and running in the Cheviots, and is just a short walk from the common.
The owner was always very helpful and easily contactable. A place we are sure to return.
