Large family apartment to let in the warm heart of Porto while the owner is abroad. Entire first floor of traditional house with wooden floors, high ceilings, wooden shutters, balcony, large terrace, garden. Completely modernised and stylishly furnished without losing its special Portuguese ambience. Two double bedrooms, one with balcony overlooking street; sitting room sofa pulls out to double bed. Large sitting room (30m²) with sofa, bookcases and easy chairs, piano, dining table seats six to eight. Sunny breakfast room opens to terrace. Owner loves cooking, so the fully equipped kitchen has everything you need. Tiled bathroom with wet room shower, WC, bidet, hand basin, large storage cupboard. Relaxing terrace (30m²) with dining table and chairs, small barbecue, and flower tubs, overlooks the garden. Shady trees and flowerbeds in garden, with two tiled patios, tables and chairs, and Brazilian hammock, barbecue. The whole apartment is fully equipped, from queen-sized duvets down to the last coffee spoon. Weekly cleaning and bed change included in price. Secure garage for rent nearby.

About Ann Palmer

I was a country town girl in New Zealand, well-behaved, earnest, always did my homework, and so on. At the age of twenty-four, I was transplanted with my husband to London where he studied international relations and I studied Renaissance culture. Our son was born there, and some years later we moved to Harwich and bought The Old Custom House with a view of the river, yachts and ferries. We bought an historic wooden yacht called Peter Duck, sailed her round Britain and then to Russia where we worked on a replica ship building project. After my husband died there, I sold our Harwich house, and bought and renovated an apartment in St Petersburg. No longer a country town girl, I lived in St Petersburg for eleven years, working on a replica ship building project and then teaching English and writing stories and poems, going to the opera and concerts, and spending summers at my friends' dacha in the forest.. In 2008, I decided to move to a new country: it must be democratic, warm, have an old culture, be close to London where my son lives, and completely new to me. My finger landed on Portugal in the map of Europe. I fell in love with it the day I woke up in Lisbon in January 2009. I had put on my Russian coat, hat, scarf, gloves and boots, and gone out for a walk. Blazing sun, historic buildings and wonderful views caught my heart. By the afternoon I was carrying my Russian winter gear over my arms and looking for estate agents. I chose to live in Porto and never regretted it for a moment. I have wonderful friends, young upstairs neighbours who have become my Porto family, and a gorgeous apartment. It's a friendly, comfortable and endlessly interesting city. I also have a cat Desdemona who is one of my best friends. Now I write, travel, cook for friends, entertain, read, lie in the hammock in the garden, and think life couldn't be better.

Why Ann Palmer chose Porto area

I chose my apartment in Porto ten days after arriving here in April 2009, and by June I was the owner. It was everything I wanted. Never mind the cracked plaster, trailing wires, festoons of pipes, and 1970s decoration. It had the traditional high ceilings, wooden floors, wooden shutters and big rooms that I couldn’t live without in Portugal, and it was full of light. The rest I could deal with, having already renovated houses and flats in England and St Petersburg. One bonus was a balcony at the front where I could watch life in the street. Another was the huge terrace that opens off the breakfast room. We’ve had a 'cocktail party' there, during a Thai teach-in at the big dining table inside, and eaten the results of our pizza or bread making parties there. Often I just sit on the terrace with my friends having lunch or 'English high tea', and at night it's good for summer dinners. The garden was a ruin filled with extraordinary rubbish when I bought the apartment. Now it is full of fruit trees, bushes and flowers, there are two patios and a barbecue, and a vegetable garden is on the way. The parish of Campanha is as old as any part of Porto. The road leading off mine is called Rua do Heroismo, because it celebrates the heroic defence of the city against invading troops from a usurper to the throne. The starving citizens gave the best food to their soldiers and made do with offal; that’s why the people of Porto were called tripe eaters. Try the dish at any café! Campanha is friendly and homely, with local shops for everything, and transport to the historic centre. In minutes I am there and can visit the bookshops, museums, historic sites, parks, and fascinating squares which for me are the architectural point of living in Porto. A bus ride across town or along the River Douro gets me to the Atlantic Ocean. After a feast of sardines at a café, grilled outside while I watch, I stagger to the beach and sleep it off.

What makes this apartment unique

I knew in minutes that I wanted to buy this apartment. Samuel Monteiro, the agent, brought me to a traditional house in a traditional street, and we went up the stairs to the first floor. I had seen no plan of the apartment, or even a description; all I knew was that it had two bedrooms and the price was not too high. Samuel had told me I would like it, and he was a good psychologist. We went into the hall, turned right, and into a room. I gasped, and said I would buy the apartment. I thought I was in the living room; it was bigger than I had dared to hope, and a granite balcony overlooked the street. “Hand carved,” Samuel murmured, looking at the balustrade. The ceiling was almost three and a half metres high. Under the shabby carpet was a wooden board floor. It was the space and light that I fell in love with, and the traditional Portuguese structure of wood and granite. The seventies aluminium windows would go; I’d have traditional folding wooden and glass doors to the balcony, and full length wooden shutters that folded back inside, just as I had seen them In Lisbon. I saw all this in an instant. But Samuel was walking down the corridor to the living rooms. Two of them! Remove the wall between them and I’d have the thirty-square-metre room that I’d always wanted. He kept going, into a breakfast room. Then he opened the sliding doors to a terrace. I followed, gasping. A terrace, and huge! He lent against the terrace wall, looking down, and I went over to look with him. Below the terrace was a big garden filled with rubbish, with a small orange tree and a lemon tree. “The garden is yours as well, Ann,” Samuel said. Nothing could have stopped me buying this apartment. Nothing did, and it’s the best place I have ever lived in.

Beautiful, sunny and convenient!

This lovely flat with a roof balcony and little garden, a piano for obsessively playing (what, not everyone does that?) and a great selection of books was so close to the train and the metro and to everything we wanted to see and do in the Porto region... It was truly fabulous and ticked every box for us. We'd stay here again in a heart beat! Thanks so much Ann for a wonderful home from home.

Lovely apartment and everything you'd need :)

We were met with a warm welcome by Ann the owner & shown all round her delightful apartment.

It's a lovely place full of all the items you need, including all the essentials for home cooking- olive oil, spices etc. There was a great welcome pack too so we didn't have to shop immediately & there was a bottle of wine, as well as some port for Christmas Day.

The flat is really well proportioned, with good sized bedrooms & a sunny balcony to enjoy eating breakfast on warmer days. Definitely recommended!

Wonderful apartment in Porto!

Beautiful, large, inviting, art filled apartment in Porto is truly a gem. We drove in from Lisbon which was quite easy. Ann arranged for the car to be in a garage nearby which was helpful. The apartment is steps away from the train station and a metro stop which was so convenient. The apartment is not in the center of town but we liked that as we walked all over the city discovering different neighborhoods, shops and restaurants. The terrace and garden of the apartment area also beautiful and we were lucky to enjoy them in December! Also, there are two sweet, sweet cats that live upstairs but visit all the time and we fell in love. It made the apartment extra special. We loved this apartment and the owner Ann is a delight. Highly recommend this apartment!!

A lot of people note its convenient location, and the beautiful terrace and garden, but you are the first to mention the art. Some is from friends, some I bought, and some is by me. I’m glad you fell in love with the two cats who live upstairs but like to visit. They are very friendly, and good company. Of course they are not obligatory! Unless guests particularly like cats, they are kept inside in the upstairs apartment.

Good Times In Porto

Excellent choice for our six days in Portugal (one in Lisbon, the rest at this locale in Porto). The owner of the property, Ann, resides in the second-floor apartment when it's not being rented (not that often, according to her), and it has a warm and inviting feel to it. She met us at the Campanha train station, which is literally a minute or two away by foot. The depot is a major waypoint for all of Portugal, which made it extremely convenient. The city Metro (subway) line is adjacent to the train station, and is easy for gringos such as ourselves to figure out. She also left some fruit, vegetables, eggs and a bottle of good red wine for us to get into the spirit, which was kind. It is an impeccably clean and fairly recently remodeled residence, which was a good thing. We didn't have a chance to properly say goodbye to Ann before we left on an early train for Lisbon, which was too bad. I wanted to tell her in person that it would be a good idea to let potential renters know that her three pretty cats live in the home when she does...My wife is very allergic to cats (not just the occasional sneeze, but the occasional trip to the doctor), and though Ann kept them with her in the upstairs apartment where she stays as a secondary residence, it was difficult at times for her (my wife) to sleep. All told though, a wonderful trip at a wonderful place to rest our weary bodies....

I am glad you found so many things about it that suited you - in fact at present it is not so much my home, as a home from home for visitors who have been here 229 days out of the last 365. I regret very much that I did not understand fully what you told me about your wife's allergy to cats. Of course we clean the apartment thoroughly before guests arrive, but had I known in advance, I could have taken extra steps to protect her from residual traces. In future I will let potential guests know about our cats so that they can decide whether or not it is a good idea to come here. I enjoyed our brief chats and also regretted not being able to see more of you and say goodbye properly.

Porto Property

We loved this apartment. For us it was perfect. Very roomy and beautifully decorated. Lots of art work, high ceilings, beautiful windows, wood floors, patio, garden. Just lovely surroundings. Part of our trip was to spend time with our friends - perfect environment for that!

For those wanting to stay in the midst of tourist area, may not be for you. But there was a train/metro system just steps away from the apartment so we could easily get to any part of Porto. The bedrooms could be a bit noisy with cars going by but after a couple of days we were adjusted to that and sleeping well. It is after all in a city and you are unlikely to find "silent" sleeping accommodations. This really was a small thing and I would definitely stay there again if I am so fortunate to return to Porto.

The other major plus was Ann Palmer - very interesting person to meet. She took the time to come by and introduce herself and chat a bit - we all enjoyed meeting her and Braca/Antonio who met us the first day. Porto and Ann's apartment were wonderful!

You are one of the most gracious, thoughtful and helpful hosts we have encountered in all our travels. From the detailed information about your home that you sent us prior to our arrival, to the personal greeting and time you spent with us when we arrived, we were so greatly impressed by your attentiveness.

Your apartment is truly a gem, so tastefully conceived, and impeccably maintained. Although we were regularly out and about in Porto, it was always a pleasure to return "home" and take full advantage of all the amenities in your wonderful property. It truly is a little "oasis" in a great neighbourhood. And we can't state enough the benefit of your prime location close to Campanha train station, metro and buses which meant we could easily be in the heart of Porto in five minutes.

We have already alerted our Canadian friends to the best place to call "home" in Porto. And would not hesitate in recommending your wonderful place to all.
