I rented the Trafalgar House for our firm's annual retreat. The home is lovely and works perfectly for groups. There were large dining areas (both inside and out), spacious bedrooms (with enough private spaces to house several unrelated people), and good living areas. The screened-in porch was fabulous, especially on rainy days when you still want to enjoy nature. The best part of the home was the gorgeous lake views. One of my colleagues remarked that she could feel the stress melt away as she was sitting by the lake. I highly recommend Trafalgar House for a relaxing getaway!
We just enjoyed a great Memorial Day weekend at Trafalgar House. The location was great, secluded but not too isolated. The dock is also very private. We rarely saw or heard other people, much more likely to hear fish jumping in the lake. We spent a lot of time in the water, canoeing and playing. Our next favorite spot was the screened porch, incredibly peaceful at all times. The house was well-appointed with everything we needed and more. The house is very close to great outdoor trips, such as Natural Bridge, hiking around the Sewanee campus and spending time on the Fiery Grizzard trail. We definitely plan on making return trips to the area and staying at Trafalgar House again.
Our family enjoyed a wonderful week at Trafalgar House in June. The scenic lake setting is beautiful and relaxing. It is tucked away in a quiet gated community, but with easy access to Sewanee, Monteagle, Chattanooga and the South Cumberland pocket wilderness areas. The house is immaculate and well appointed with many personal touches that make it feel like a "home away from home"... much better than a sterile hotel room. We enjoyed day hikes, Sewanee campus, and other local activities. But we also liked just relaxing at the house... playing games, teaching my grandson how to fish from the dock, etc. Lots of deer, birds, frogs, fish jumping in the lake and the biggest owl I have ever seen.
The houses are far enough apart that it feels like you have the place to yourself. It is much more than just a place to sleep. Plenty of great restaurants nearby (Pearl's, Ivy Wild, Crossroads, Mountain Goat Market & others), and a well-stocked kitchen for meals at home. The owner is extremely helpful and responds promptly. I am so glad we found this hidden gem! We have already made reservations for a return visit in October.
This was such a wonderful house for a wonderful weekend! It was beautiful, well-appointed, and the setting was perfect. Hours were spent on the dock watching the fish jump in the lake, the deer feed nearby, the squirrels and other critters, and listening to bullfrogs and birds. We even had a hawk do a low dive. It was definitely difficult to leave. Thanks so much, Lynne.
Our family spent a wonderful long weekend at this lovely home making great memories with children and grandchildren. The lakefront location was a perfect place to relax (screened porch was a favorite spot) but if we wanted to do something, we fished and canoed. The kitchen was very well stocked with cute dishes and plenty of pots and pans. There are restaurants close by so if you don't want to cook, you have several options. The beautiful Sewanee campus is not to be missed. The owners of the house are great and extremely helpful. All in all, a fantastic weekend!! I would highly recommend staying here and we definitely want to go back!
Five friends from college and I rented this house for a week in August 2014. My friends all came from different parts of the country - Chicago, New York, Atlanta, DC, and New Haven. We all attended a small liberal arts school in Virginia, Washington & Lee University, which is similar in many ways to the neighboring University of the South at Sewanee.
Although I live in DC these days, I grew up in Chattanooga and have several family connections to Sewanee. I knew about the house because my family stayed there on multiple occasions when I was younger for Sewanee events.
While I was off to school in another pretty part of the country, I always wanted to show my friends the beauty of the South Cumberland Plateau. Now several years out of school, this place came to mind from memories of my youth when we were trying to think of vacation ideas.
I cannot think of a better place to have stayed. We so enjoyed spending time together in this beautiful, secluded home on a private lake. I can honestly say the house was perfect for us and helped make this one of the most enjoyable weeks of my life.
We played two rounds of golf at the Sewanee Golf Course, had a doubles tournament at the Clifftops tennis courts, hiked the Sewanee Perimeter Trail (from the Highway 41 entrance gate to the Memorial Cross…. 16 or so miles in one day, a massive 8 hour undertaking, even for former cross country runners), swam in the beautiful mountain lake from the dock on the property, and caught enough panfish to eat for dinner one night. We loved our dinner at Pearl's and ate lunch twice at Shenanigans. We also drove through Lynchburg to get barbecue at Barrelhouse and see the Jack Daniel's distillery on our way to a free concert in Midtown Nashville one night. The house is perfect for day hikes into the South Cumberland State Park.
The listing description is 100% accurate, owners are great, and the place is even better in person than in the listing photos!
I highly recommend you see for yourself!
