About the property

5 Bedrooms, and 3 bathrooms, sleeping 10 +2

Palazzo Pasquini is a restored X1V C palace with wondrous views. The house is substantial, with enormous entrance/dining room with arched doorways, high beamed ceilings, exposed stonework & traditional flooring. There is a large traditional Tuscan kitchen, leading to the garden & dining terrace with the most fantastic views over the rooftops of the village, with the valley & mountains beyond.

The garden has various nooks & crannies for quiet reflection & a private pool with Jacuzzi style Roman steps (12Mx4M). There are 3 double bedrooms, 1 with adjoining sitting rooms, twin rooms - 1 which connects with a double. There are 2 shower rooms & 1 bathroom.

There is also a further living/dining room & a 'breakfast' style room with arched doorway leading through to part of the garden. There are little places to explore all round the house, delightful for hide & seek! The house oozes character & is a complete one off - a real feel of history with many antiques, & original features.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Hello Lorraine - we returned to Canada earlier this week after a wonderful vacation. Our stay in Treppignana was so enjoyable that we are already planning a return trip! The weather, hospitality, the food, the wine and the local scenery were beyond our expectations. We especially enjoyed meeting Dario, Luciana, Eleanora and Lorenzo - also Beryl and Martin. Martin's walking maps are very helpful. We did not make the walk to Barga this trip but hope to do so the next time.

Our first night meal prepared by Luciana really hit the spot after the long drive from Nice. Many of us are hoping to try to replicate the soup and the ricotta tart. The second night meal was more than excellent - even the grappa!

The wine bar in Castelnuovo is a real treat - what wonderful people. And of course, we met Claudio and had a couple of meals with him and Clementine. Thank you for all the suggestions in the information package.

We spent the last half of our holiday in Provence at a friend's home. It was very nice but the weather was not. I guess we should have followed Martin's advice and stayed in Italy. Please pass on our thank you's to everyone.

I am still getting caught up with things here but will forward a couple of photos later on. Thanks again.

Map

Car: necessary

The property is situated in the tiny ancient village of Treppignana high in the hills overlooking the Garfagnana Valley. The population of this well kept and friendly village is only 30 , & cars are not permitted beyond the main Square, which ensures peace and quiet, and safe exploring for children. The views from the village are amazing at every turn due to its high position, and from the bell tower there are 360 degrees views of the entire area - wonderful! A walkers/trekkers paradise, there are various walks straight from the village, and the mountain peaks are all climbable by foot.

All this peace and yet only a 15 minute drive from the market town of Castelnuovo and 20 minutes or so from the medieval town of Barga both with their various bars and restaurants. The nearest shop/bar is a 5 minute drive away and there is a restaurant within 10 minutes. Pisa 1 hr 20 mins; Lucca 1 hr; Florence 1hr 45 mins; mediaeval villages everywhere; National Parks 30 mins.

Step back in time!

Palazzo Pasquini

  • 5 of 5

This is the most amazing place! It has everything you could want and the owners are lovely.

There were 12 of us age 2 - 72 and we all loved every minute of our stay. The house was beautiful, clean and very well equipped. Don't be put off by the road up, it is more than worth it and gives you the chance to experience real Tuscany.

The restaurant at the foot of the hill provided excellent food and incredible value for money and service (too much wine too!)

Really central location for visiting the area and perfect to come home to in the evening to watch the sunset!

We will definitely go back and I would highly recommend it to anyone thinking of visiting this area.

Thanks again for a perfect holiday!

Fantastic house in fantastic location, but just a little but...

  • 4 of 5

Palazzo Pasquini is a delightful, atmospheric old stone house, replete with a sense of history, and unexpected nooks and crannies. The views over the valley of the river Serchio, to the mountains beyond, are breathtaking. The village is small, and the road to it from the valley is winding and at times narrow, so drivers need to anticipate, and be prepared occasionally to negotiate!

There is much to see and explore if you can tear yourselves away from the house and the view. Lucca is worth more than one visit, and Barga and the gardens near Marla, esp. Villa Reale, make good days out - take a picnic for the gardens. Several good restaurants in the towns.

We were a 3-generation family group with a 6-month-old, so we ate at home most nights, and therein lies our reason for only 4 stars. Whilst one is prepared, even delighted, to take the idiosyncrasies of an old house as part of the charm, there is really no excuse for such archaic cooking facilities. We also had a problem with hot water in the kitchen and the far bathroom. The problem was, admittedly, intermittent (it never seemed to happen when Dario was there), but affected us often enough to be annoying. After running a hot tap for ten minutes (and I mean ten minutes, once we tried even longer) you expect a result, but many times it did not happen. Maybe a winter service is required.

Overall, though, a delightful place to stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. We are glad you loved this unique place! I contacted Dario as soon as we received your e mail and he is putting in a new oven for next year (he did have a comment about it last year and was going to buy a new one, but just had it serviced instead as he had already allocated his funds to invest in all new mattresses). The new oven will be in place for 2018 season. The issue with hot water seems very new and has not been mentioned by other guests but they have had friends to stay to test it out and as you say there does seem to be an intermittent issue. This will also be resolved for 2018 - Dario is putting in a second boiler. Thank you for bringing these points to our attention, to ensure that Dario continues to provide a good service and get 5 star ratings. We hope to welcome you back to the area another time. Beautiful Getaway in the Hills

  • 5 of 5

We were three families with 5 children ranging from 6 to 11 and we had lots of space to enjoy our holiday! Dario, the owner, and Eleanora, his daughter who spoke English, were very welcoming and helpful. Dario lives in another part of the palazzo with his family and on our last night they even gave us a tour of their part of the house, which was very interesting! It's a very historic property with lots of charm. It is indeed great for hide and seek! Though the owner lives onsite, we had our privacy and only saw him when we asked for some help with working the spa and of course with the excellent pizza night! We also booked a chef to come and cook some traditional Tuscan fare for us one night, and Dario and Eleanora helped with this too. The pool was beautiful, the location was ideal in the hills, the sunsets were magnificent! There are several lovely outdoor seating areas around the property. The beds and rooms were very comfortable. There is a wifi room! We had such a wonderful time and will definitely return!

Beautiful house with magnificient views

  • 5 of 5

We were two families (4 adults, 4 children; ages from 13 to 16) from Finland spending our holidays in this beautiful old house with plenty of room and magnificient views! The few last kilometers to Treppignana village the road was quite narrow in some places, but we managed well even with our 9-seat minivan. We explored Garfagnana area as well as Lucca and Florence. In the afternoons kids enjoyed the very nice pool and in the evenings we admired beautiful sunsets and played some billiard or table tennis. The owner Dario and his daughter Eleonora were very helpful and gave advise when needed. Special tanks to Lorenzo and Dario for the tasty traditional Italian pizzas that they prepared us in the stone owen on the last evening of our holiday. We had a lot of memories that we will not forget! We will absolute come back some day.

Beautiful house in a peaceful location with spect

  • 5 of 5

Dario was extremely helpful and assisted with any requirements immediately. House is wonderful, spacious and was a perfect size for the 9 of us who stayed there. Spectacular views and location. Outside terrace is brilliant for sharing lunch and evening meals. Welcome dip in the pool to cool off from Italian weather.

Amazing

  • 5 of 5

We just loved the place. Amazing wiev. The pool and the garden is bigger than you see on the picture. We called it "our castle". It was as if we lived in the middleage. It was perfect for us with grown up children. We were 12 adults and had a lot of space. A lot of stairs. Very quiet and you need a car!
