About Shelagh Whitney
In 1990 we built our 'dream cabin' in Hayesville, NC and drove north from Atlanta almost every weekend until our full time move the summer of 2001. Leaving the craziness of the city, but staying within easy driving range of its energy, turned out to be the perfect move for us. With so many friends visiting and wanting a 'piece of quiet' themselves, it was on to real estate in 2002 where I spend most of my time today... Except when Mike and I are at home, still loving our 'dream cabin.'
Shelagh Whitney purchased this Cottage in 2007
Why Shelagh Whitney chose Hiawassee
'Fernleaf Cottage' was actually bought as our future retirement spot. Although we do love our cabin Mike and I both grew up around the Great Lakes and couldn't see ourselves without a water view when we truly do retire to the porch! Being a Realtor I always have my eye out for properties that are a great value, with a great location and view! There was just something about this property that grabbed me the second I walked in and I knew that we had to have it in our future.
What makes this Cottage unique
While you are, literally, only 2 or 3 minutes to the marina, restaurants, the movies, shopping and town when you are on that back porch you feel like light years from civilization! That's what so many of our guests have said that one of them wants to relax, read and hang out while the other wants to go, go, go... NOW! Everything is so close they can do both but get back together on a moments notice, AND, when you are so relaxed that you forgot the hamburger buns, you're out and back in no time at all! Plus, the cottage is very cozy as it was decorated for kick back enjoyment but NOT from yard sales!

Fernleaf cottage was an excellent escape from the hurricane at the coast. The cottage is clean and cozy, well equip. The screened porch with the peek view was the best. Shelagh and Cathy were very accommodating and supportive with our need to be flexible with our booking.
vacation in the mountains
lovely little cottage. love the screen porch.
Dear Karen, thank you so much!
Would love to have you back sans hurricanes!
Very clean, central location, quite relaxing. Owner is top-notch and accommodating.
Thank you Craig! Happy that the new part, whatever it is, was installed so, come back and have a GOOD shower between runs to your wonderful new store 'CHILL' at our favorite watering hole, The Sand Bar!
A wonderful place to stay!
We had a wonderful time at Fern Leaf Cottage. Everything was very clean and we had everything we needed. Shelagh was very helpful and we really enjoyed her emails keeping us informed. A great experience!!!
If I wasn't committed to always having the cottage professionally cleaned between visitors I would return your cleaning fee, thank you! We hope to see you again in October....the large oak tree that blocks some of the view in the summer is the most beautiful tree in the world come fall!
You're obviously home safe, glad to hear it!
Peaceful, beautiful stay!
My family and I had a wonderful stay here at Fernleaf Cottage! It was lovely, wintery weather and was very nice to have the beautiful view of the lake from the kitchen window.
No frills just a nice place to stay
My Family of 4 plus 2 dogs stayed for 5 days at Fernleaf. The stay was very enjoyable, and the accommodations were just fine. It's not the biggest place & if you want a hot tub & game room this is not your place. But it is a quaint home with a great screened in porch & deck. The weather was not the best during our stay so we stayed in the home a lot. We were never left for wanting. Except for perhaps another set of towels. The owner Shelagh was fantastic, from start to finish. Oh and the view was fantastic!
