In 1990 we built our 'dream cabin' in Hayesville, NC and drove north from Atlanta almost every weekend until our full time move the summer of 2001. Leaving the craziness of the city, but staying within easy driving range of its energy, turned out to be the perfect move for us. With so many friends visiting and wanting a 'piece of quiet' themselves, it was on to real estate in 2002 where I spend most of my time today... Except when Mike and I are at home, still loving our 'dream cabin.'
Shelagh Whitney purchased this cottage in 2007
'Fernleaf Cottage' was actually bought as our future retirement spot. Although we do love our cabin Mike and I both grew up around the Great Lakes and couldn't see ourselves without a water view when we truly do retire to the porch! Being a Realtor I always have my eye out for properties that are a great value, with a great location and view! There was just something about this property that grabbed me the second I walked in and I knew that we had to have it in our future.
While you are, literally, only 2 or 3 minutes to the marina, restaurants, the movies, shopping and town when you are on that back porch you feel like light years from civilization! That's what so many of our guests have said that one of them wants to relax, read and hang out while the other wants to go, go, go... NOW! Everything is so close they can do both but get back together on a moments notice, AND, when you are so relaxed that you forgot the hamburger buns, you're out and back in no time at all! Plus, the cottage is very cozy as it was decorated for kick back enjoyment but NOT from yard sales!
You certainly do have one of the best rental cottages that we've rented! Very comfortable. Didn't need any A/C and the heat at night was a blessing. So many good restaurants, shops and artists. The people are so friendly and eager to share their knowledge. Thank you Shelagh for always being just a phone call away and for sharing all the wonderful treasures on your shelves. Great library!
We arrived after an 11 hour drive to find, thankfully, that the cottage is represented fairly by the website photos. We had planned to spend lots of time on the screened porch but the weather was unseasonably HOT, so only breakfast was enjoyed outside (not the owner's fault). The house is nicely furnished and the linens were great but there was a hint of musty odor upon arrival. Perhaps because it was so hot, the house was closed up tight and not allowed to air out. The area in and around Hiawassee was absolutely gorgeous. Coming from flat Florida my husband and I kept saying "this is sooo beautiful" every time we turned another winding road and there are many. While the restaurants are nothing to write home about, there is one in Hayesville NC (15 minutes away) that served a fantastic dinner - don't miss the Copper Door. Reasonable (for what you get) prices and great service. Sorry we didn't go until our last night. Ingles grocery is great. Don't miss Brasstown Bald. We also loved our Friday night at Hightower Creek Vineyard with the acoustics and tapas from 6 - 8 but make a reservation and Crane Creek Vineyard on Saturday afternoon with live entertainment. Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding at Boundary Waters in Hiawassee was a highlight. And make sure you take a walk down around the neighborhood to see all the million dollar homes facing the water that are a stone's throw from the cottage. Owner was very easy to work with. You get what you are promised. Price was fair. Would have liked to have had a full size ironing board and a DVD player but we lived without them. All in all, a very nice experience.
Very nicely decorated. The rental price was great. Great location. My family really enjoyed our stay here. The owner is a very nice lady who really tries to make it nice for her guests. Would stay there again.
The owners were excellent, responsive and pleasant transaction. The property internally as pretty much as advertised although the furniture in the sitting room and in the covered patio could have been more comfortable. The consequence of allowing pets is a slight pet smell which seemed mostly to be in the sitting room. As non pet owners maybe we are more sensitive than those who are. Not a big deal as the property was very clean. Our main issue stopping us giving this 5 stars was the disappointing Lake view, there isnt one! Obviously the trees have grown since the last pictures were taken (this also caused issues with the wifi which were resolved very quickly by the owners). I would suggest more realistic expectations be set on that.
My wife and I enjoyed our stay at Feenleaf. We went hiking each morning with our dogs at High Shoals Trails and then Brasstown Bald. Afternoons were spent browsing the local shops and roadside produce stands in Hiawassee, then the lake one day. Drank wine and grilled out each evening. I'd go back in a heartbeat. Cottage was clean and well maintained. Loved the screened in porch! Owner was easy to communicate with and responsive.
My husband and I and our 2 little dogs had the most wonderful time at Fernleaf Cottage. We found the home exceptionally clean and most comfortable. The screened porch was our favorite place to relax and take in the views, listen to the birds and take naps. We loved taking our dogs on walks around the property and through the woods on wide trails. We found the King sized bed to be very comfortable and we slept great every night. I would definitely choose the cute cottage again!
I chose Fernleaf Cottage because communications with the owner left no doubt that it was the perfect place for a week away from everything. Cottage was perfect for two people (it would work for four). Everything was clean and ready for us. Shelagh could not have been more welcoming. Definitely a place we will be using again. View of the lake, easy to get to, close to town - what more could you ask for.
Just a couple of minutes outside of downtown Hiawassee, GA and about 10 minutes by the lake over the border to Hayesville, NC with it's Historic Downtown Square, multiple artists studios and large earthen dam. Head south fewer than 30 minutes to the Appalachian Trail or the unique alpine themed town of Helen, GA. Visit the Planetarium at Young Harris College, take a class in anything from blacksmithing to watercolor and everything in between at The John C. Campbell Folk School, enjoy live music, local vineyards, The Georgia Mountain Fair, and all of the outdoor activities you can imagine!
