About Shelagh Whitney

In 1990 we built our 'dream cabin' in Hayesville, NC and drove north from Atlanta almost every weekend until our full time move the summer of 2001. Leaving the craziness of the city, but staying within easy driving range of its energy, turned out to be the perfect move for us. With so many friends visiting and wanting a 'piece of quiet' themselves, it was on to real estate in 2002 where I spend most of my time today... Except when Mike and I are at home, still loving our 'dream cabin.'

Shelagh Whitney purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Shelagh Whitney chose Hiawassee

'Fernleaf Cottage' was actually bought as our future retirement spot. Although we do love our cabin Mike and I both grew up around the Great Lakes and couldn't see ourselves without a water view when we truly do retire to the porch! Being a Realtor I always have my eye out for properties that are a great value, with a great location and view! There was just something about this property that grabbed me the second I walked in and I knew that we had to have it in our future.

What makes this cottage unique

While you are, literally, only 2 or 3 minutes to the marina, restaurants, the movies, shopping and town when you are on that back porch you feel like light years from civilization! That's what so many of our guests have said that one of them wants to relax, read and hang out while the other wants to go, go, go... NOW! Everything is so close they can do both but get back together on a moments notice, AND, when you are so relaxed that you forgot the hamburger buns, you're out and back in no time at all! Plus, the cottage is very cozy as it was decorated for kick back enjoyment but NOT from yard sales!

Guestbook comments from the owner

You certainly do have one of the best rental cottages that we've rented! Very comfortable. Didn't need any A/C and the heat at night was a blessing. So many good restaurants, shops and artists. The people are so friendly and eager to share their knowledge. Thank you Shelagh for always being just a phone call away and for sharing all the wonderful treasures on your shelves. Great library!

Head south fewer than 30 minutes to the Appalachian Trail or the unique alpine themed town of Helen, GA. Visit the Planetarium at Young Harris College, take a class in anything from blacksmithing to watercolor and everything in between at The John C. Campbell Folk School, enjoy live music, local vineyards, The Georgia Mountain Fair, and all of the outdoor activities you can imagine!

Wonderful little spot to spend a long weekend at!

  • 5 of 5

I am that user who never leaves reviews but I just loved this property. I took my mom for a long weekend and we both loved the house. The owner's were amazing and I was incredibly thankful they worked with me on adjusting our visit. I traveled to DC last week for work and my trip was due to end on Wednesday but I had to stay until Thursday night which is when we were due at the cabin. A quick email was all it took for us to advance my reservation by a day so we could still enjoy our getaway.

Mom and I both found the home to be very comfortable and although the weather turned rather cold I enjoyed snuggling with my dog Elvis on the screened porch each morning while watching the activity on the lake.

The home was clean and we had everything we needed. Since I was traveling with my mother I didn't want to be too remote and it was nice that this spot felt really private yet was close to the major highway and town. A couple of houses are above and below this house but that took nothing away from the views or the peacefulness. The living room furniture and beds were also very comfortable.

I hope we can return in the future and if you are looking at Fernleaf Cottage I highly recommend it.

Owner's Response: Sweet! Always happy to accommodate when possible and so glad you were able to enjoy your getaway! There really is something special about this little place, I always tell Mike we need to book it for ourselves!!! Totally get the security of knowing you are close to town but miles away in spirit! We would love to have you and Elvis and 'his Nana' anytime! Come back! All the best, Shelagh

Great mountain get-away!

  • 5 of 5

A most relaxing vacation. We had everything we needed to enjoy our stay. The house was great, very comfortable, clean, and was very well supplied and pet friendly. The internet connectivity was amazingly good from every place in the house, including the screened porch. Loved the privacy and the location, yet very close to everything. Thank you for a wonderful week.

Great stay at Fernleaf Cottage....clean, comfortable and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We had a great four night stay at Fernleaf. A very nice cottage. Clean, had everything we needed including excellent internet service. The screened in porch was perfect for drinking coffee in the morning and having a glass of wine in the evening. Close to restaurants, a grocery store and great hiking trails. We hiked at Brasstown Bald - where there are four trails. Enjoyed walking around Lake Chatuge on one of our rainy days. Kitchen was great for cooking, had most of our meals at the cabin including grilling in the evening. Shelagh was awesome to work with. I broke a drinking glass and offered to pay for it - she told me not to worry about it. King size bed was very comfortable. Fireworks were not too loud for our dog on the fourth of July. A great mountain getaway, highly recommend.
