Shenandoah Valley House Rental Photos and Description

Cabin, 3 Bedrooms + Den, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

Come experience the magic of Alone Mill! Canoe, bike, hike or just hang out by the creek!

We are a 15 minute (6 mile) drive from Lexington, Virginia, home to Washington & Lee University, Virginia Military Institute and the Virginia Horse Center. Rockbridge County Virginia is home to the Maury River, the only river in Virginia that begins & ends in the same county. Spring, summer and fall are great times for running the whitewater in Goshen Pass or tubing the flat water into Lexington. Come to the country where you can stay up late, dazzled by the stars and the Milky Way.

In the late fall & winter, enjoy our cozy cabin and a game of pool. After dark in June and July, the lightning-bug display is amazing every night! Later in the summer and fall, the tree frogs and cicadas fill the air with their songs. The cabin is right on a popular (and challenging) biking route.

The School House is located within 300 yards of a river access point locally known as Alone Mill. Upstream is my personal favorite stretch of canoeing on the Maury, it's a peaceful 5 hour ride in slow water and can be as fast as 2 hours when the river is up! You can put in at Goshen or Rockbridge Baths and walk home from the take-out.

If you're more interested in a bubbling stream, Alone Mill Creek passes within 50 feet of the front door!

Rockbridge County also has thousands of acres of National Forest and State-managed land for hunting and hiking in the mountains. The cabin is within about 6 miles of access at Goshen Pass and other spots are equally close.

Other activities at the School House include a pool table, ping pong, basketball goal and badmitton set. The yard is large and flat, perfect for a football game, and the driveway is flat also, good for the little kids to practice bike riding.

A 1 mile walk will take you to weekend wine tasting at Lexington Valley Vineyard, one of several vineyards in the county.

About Sarah or Charles

I have lived in Rockbridge County, VA since 1990. While I attended W&L, my friends & I often drove around the county. I always loved driving through Alone Mill when we were going to Goshen Pass; I knew there was special magic in this place. It's peaceful & the stars are brighter than most.

Sarah or Charles purchased this house in 2007

Why Sarah or Charles chose Shenandoah Valley

My partner bought a house at Alone Mill in 1998 & when the Schoolhouse became available in 2007, I jumped at the opportunity. The Maury River here is perfect for canoeing, tubing, or just lounging in a chair at the edge of the water! Anyone who likes to spend time outdoors loves Alone Mill.

What makes this house unique

Fresh water recreation - fishing, canoeing, boating, tubing - and plenty to do inside or in Lexington area if the weather isn't perfect. Ample space in the cabin for a large group to gather and enjoy time together.

Awesome adventure location!

  • 5 of 5

The Alone Mill Schoolhouse is located near Lexington, Virginia with access to a myriad of activities. Being December, we did get to enjoy the Maury River, which is nearby by hiking next to it. There is fantastic hiking near by and the Schoolhouse was always the rest stop at the end of the day. The Schoolhouse has great space and the pool table was extra added fun! Enjoyed it immensely!

Wedding at the school house

  • 5 of 5

Charles and Sarah have been beyond accommodating in letting us have our wedding here at Alone Mill. We had over 100 guests for the wedding and it was perfect!! The house and property are both beautiful and comfortable, we had everything we needed and they were so helpful with recommendations and advise. I hear this is the first wedding at Alone Mill, but I don't think it will be the last, it was perfect!

Great place to relax while enjoying all the house has to offer!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful weekend at the schoolhouse. It is absolutely beautiful. There was plenty of space to spread out and a great common room to hang out together for a game of pool or cards. The yard was amazing for a game of badminton and volleyball. We were able to sit on the porch while the dogs enjoyed the yard. The one watch-out for us - no cell service if you have Verizon or Sprint, not sure about other providers. We often spend time in the Lexington area and plan on staying in the Schoolhouse again!

Owner's Response: I'm glad you & your family enjoyed staying at Alone Mill Schoolhouse! It's true, most cell phones don't have reception at the house. Many guests are delighted to be somewhat out of touch. For safety & convenience, the Schoolhouse has a landline & long distance is not blocked. We also have wifi.

Clean, comfortable, beautiful

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at the Schoolhouse twice now, and both times it has been great. It's super-clean (enough to make you jealous), and comfortable, and it has everything we needed (and more: the pool table is great.) We're a big group-- babies, kids, grownups, night owls and early birds, and it worked perfectly for us. It's an incredibly pretty spot-- you could just drive around all day and marvel at the mountains. We even did a (freezing!) New Year's polar bear swim in the river.

We plan on going there again, for sure.

Owner's Response: Please come back in the summer when you do not have to be a Polar Bear to enjoy the river.

Nice little weekend away

  • 4 of 5

The schoolhouse is a nice little home in the middle of the country, but a short (10 minute) drive to the closest town. We enjoyed our time at the schoolhouse, but were on the go most of the time we were in town. We spent most of our time in Natural Bridge enjoying the Safari Park, Zoo and Natural Bridge itself. It appears that a black widow has taken residence in the window outside the AC unit in the living room, so please be careful when you remove. I forgot to leave a note when we left on the counter about this.

I will say I am not positive, but I believe there might be a spirit/ghost in the house. The first night, I thought my 16 yrd old daughter walk by the room as I saw a young girl throught the door jam go by, but come to find out she was in the living room still watching tv.

The owners were great and answered any questions I had beforehand and were flexible with us arriving early. Thank you!

Take time to enjoy this place!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Alone Mill Schoolhouse. Everything was clean and well maintained; the owners were great to work with. The location worked well for day trips to Monticello, Washington DC, and the Natural Bridge. It was close to the Virginia Horse Park, but very secluded. The first trip down the winding mountain road was a little intimidating for us flatlanders, but well worth the adventure. We were amazed to have a place like this only about 15 minutes from the nearest Wal-Mart. Having two bathrooms, ample space to spread out, and the 3 separate bedrooms made mornings so much easier for our group of 7 compared to times when we've shared hotel suites. Everyone in our group slept really well--maybe it was the quiet, or the clean mountain air. Our main regret is that we would like to have allowed ourselves more time to spend just sitting on the porch, listening to the stream and watching the abundant butterflies.

Owner's Response: Alone Mill Schoolhouse is located in a place that has 5 distinct routes to/from Lexington. The unpaved road (Alone Mill Rd) is the most direct route to Virginia Horse Center but another option is fully paved and only about 1.5 miles longer. If you want directions for fully paved routes, please let me know. Do save time to enjoy the house & its calm, relaxing surroundings!
