Overview

Lexington House Rental Photos and Description

Cabin, 3 Bedrooms + Den, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

Come experience the magic of Alone Mill! Canoe, bike, hike or just hang out by the creek!

We are a 15 minute (6 mile) drive from Lexington, Virginia, home to Washington & Lee University, Virginia Military Institute and the Virginia Horse Center. Rockbridge County Virginia is home to the Maury River, the only river in Virginia that begins & ends in the same county. Spring, summer and fall are great times for running the whitewater in Goshen Pass or tubing the flat water into Lexington. Come to the country where you can stay up late, dazzled by the stars and the Milky Way.

In the late fall & winter, enjoy our cozy cabin and a game of pool. After dark in June and July, the lightning-bug display is amazing every night! Later in the summer and fall, the tree frogs and cicadas fill the air with their songs. The cabin is right on a popular (and challenging) biking route.

The School House is located within 300 yards of a river access point locally known as Alone Mill. Upstream is my personal favorite stretch of canoeing on the Maury, it's a peaceful 5 hour ride in slow water and can be as fast as 2 hours when the river is up! You can put in at Goshen or Rockbridge Baths and walk home from the take-out.

If you're more interested in a bubbling stream, Alone Mill Creek passes within 50 feet of the front door!

Rockbridge County also has thousands of acres of National Forest and State-managed land for hunting and hiking in the mountains. The cabin is within about 6 miles of access at Goshen Pass and other spots are equally close.

Other activities at the School House include a pool table, ping pong, basketball goal and badmitton set. The yard is large and flat, perfect for a football game, and the driveway is flat also, good for the little kids to practice bike riding.

A 1 mile walk will take you to weekend wine tasting at Lexington Valley Vineyard, one of several vineyards in the county.

About Sarah or Charles

I have lived in Rockbridge County, VA since 1990. While I attended W&L, my friends & I often drove around the county. I always loved driving through Alone Mill when we were going to Goshen Pass; I knew there was special magic in this place. It's peaceful & the stars are brighter than most.

Sarah or Charles purchased this house in 2007

Why Sarah or Charles chose Shenandoah Valley

My partner bought a house at Alone Mill in 1998 & when the Schoolhouse became available in 2007, I jumped at the opportunity. The Maury River here is perfect for canoeing, tubing, or just lounging in a chair at the edge of the water! Anyone who likes to spend time outdoors loves Alone Mill.

What makes this house unique

Fresh water recreation - fishing, canoeing, boating, tubing - and plenty to do inside or in Lexington area if the weather isn't perfect. Ample space in the cabin for a large group to gather and enjoy time together.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Staying here at the schoolhouse was such a wonderful way to relax at the end of a long day. It is so serene here. The creek is mesmerizing. The absolute quiet is such a treat and perfect for a solid night's sleep. I love all the memorabilia of Virginia found all around the house! It was a nice time and I hope I can repeat it. All the comforts of home. Awesome! Thanks!

Horrible

  • 1 of 5

Would give a zero if it would let me. The beds were horrible, could not get any sleep at all.

Owner's Response: I really wish that you had contacted us at the beginning of your visit. Three sleepless nights is unacceptable. We would have made arrangements to alleviate your discomfort from the outset. Mattress comfort is subjective. The Schoolhouse has 4 beds with traditional inner spring mattresses and box spring foundations. Our goal is for every guest to have a relaxing and enjoyable stay.

Time stands still

  • 4 of 5

This is perfect if you are looking to stay in a quaint, historical home. Town is only 20 minutes away but the property is so secluded. The stream is within walking distance. The owners went above and beyond to welcome us.

Owner's Response: Thanks for staying at Alone Mill Schoolhouse. We contacted this guest about the 4 star rating & they said it was a mistake. Time does stand still at Alone Mill. Come enjoy our owl population!

Great place not far from it all

  • 5 of 5

A few of us were competing at the Virginia Horse Center and this house was a great fit, about 10-12 minutes from the horse center. The house was clean, comfy, and even though there is no central air the window unit in the living room kept the whole place comfortable even during one of the hottest weekends. There was also a window unit in one of the bedrooms, the other two bedrooms had fans. The rental process from start to finish was as easy as it gets, we look forward to coming back next year!

Owner's Response: Thanks for staying at Alone Mill Schoolhouse. It's always about 10 degrees cooler here in the country than at the Horse Center or in town. Glad to know you were comfortable during a scorching August weekend. Next year, consider adding a day to enjoy some time cooling off in the Maury River!

Awesome adventure location!

  • 5 of 5

The Alone Mill Schoolhouse is located near Lexington, Virginia with access to a myriad of activities. Being December, we did get to enjoy the Maury River, which is nearby by hiking next to it. There is fantastic hiking near by and the Schoolhouse was always the rest stop at the end of the day. The Schoolhouse has great space and the pool table was extra added fun! Enjoyed it immensely!

Wedding at the school house

  • 5 of 5

Charles and Sarah have been beyond accommodating in letting us have our wedding here at Alone Mill. We had over 100 guests for the wedding and it was perfect!! The house and property are both beautiful and comfortable, we had everything we needed and they were so helpful with recommendations and advise. I hear this is the first wedding at Alone Mill, but I don't think it will be the last, it was perfect!

Great place to relax while enjoying all the house has to offer!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful weekend at the schoolhouse. It is absolutely beautiful. There was plenty of space to spread out and a great common room to hang out together for a game of pool or cards. The yard was amazing for a game of badminton and volleyball. We were able to sit on the porch while the dogs enjoyed the yard. The one watch-out for us - no cell service if you have Verizon or Sprint, not sure about other providers. We often spend time in the Lexington area and plan on staying in the Schoolhouse again!

Owner's Response: I'm glad you & your family enjoyed staying at Alone Mill Schoolhouse! It's true, most cell phones don't have reception at the house. Many guests are delighted to be somewhat out of touch. For safety & convenience, the Schoolhouse has a landline & long distance is not blocked. We also have wifi.
