This 4 bedroom breathtaking Lake Michigan blufftop home overlooks both Leelanau County in the distance and Old Mission Peninsula in Traverse City! It is situated halfway between Charlevoix and Traverse City, 8 miles north of the quaint harbor town of Elk Rapids. Wonderful restaurants abound nearby, both in the Village of Elk Rapids and also to the east, at The Rowe Inn, an award-winning gourmet restaurant just a beautiful drive away through the northern Michigan countryside!
This completely remodeled 3-level house is in a very private, wooded setting. There is no road noise here! With over 2600 square feet on three windowed levels, your family can spread out and feel all of the comforts of home. The downstairs has a family room, with sliding glass doors to the outside, a queen-sized sofa bed, and adjacent bathroom/shower, so it makes for an additional private sleeping area. The main floor has two queen sized bedrooms, an adjacent bath, is beautifully updated and has a modern kitchen (dual convection oven and Jenn-air range), open living room and dining area, plus a sunroom off the kitchen! On this level, there is also a large deck off the 16-foot sliding glass doors across the living room looking out onto the beautiful Lake Michigan waters! Upstairs, there is a king-sized master bedroom on the lakeside, where you can lie in bed at night and listen to the waves lap the shore below, a large guest room with twin beds, and third bathroom/shower.
There are two "landing decks" going down to the water. We usually have a large beach area, but this year the water level is up quite high.
This is a true 'northern woods getaway!' Several golf courses are nearby (A-ga-ming is the closest), and there are plenty of area attractions to visit, but you can also choose to stay all day and relax at this peaceful retreat on the beach, ending the day with a beautiful sunset over the lake in the evening!

This is Sue, and I bought Mission View Cottage several years ago for my up north getaway. I had been looking all over northern Michigan for my perfect 'up north' retreat, reminiscent of our family's UP getaways when I was young. It was an older chalet style house, and I updated it with new bathrooms and kitchen, bright colors, and cottagey furnishings. It is a peaceful oasis in the north woods, surrounded by trees. It is very private, and it sits on top of a bluff overlooking the lake, with breathtaking views.
I can spend days there and not go anywhere! Each window you look out of offers a snapshot of the surrounding pine trees, or the evergreens, or the water. Sunsets from the deck or from anywhere in the house are fabulous!
Elk Rapids is just a quick drive into town (8 miles) and is like going back in time, with an old-fashioned main street and movie theatre and quaint shops. I love the drive through the farmland and hills, and I take several 'countryside' drives when I am there, just to go exploring, or to do out to dinner at some of the countryside restaurants nearby. The Rowe Inn is a favorite for fine dining! Charlevoix is just a 25 minute drive north, and I love to go there, as well!
When I'm home, I love long walks along the road or on the beach up and down the lake.
I hope you enjoy my home as much as I do!
Sue Carlson purchased this house in 1998
I had spent summer vacations at my grandparents' lodge in the Upper Peninsula. I spent 5 summers traveling the highways and byways of northern Michigan and the UP looking for just the right spot for my own summer getaway. I almost purchased a place in the Les Cheneaux Islands, but all of the ingredients didn't seem right (there were no cappucino cafes nearby ;-). I drove up and down the farmland roads along Lake Michigan in the lower Peninsula, hoping to find something closer to home (which was Traverse City then), when on a Labor Day weekend I followed one more 'for sale' sign down a dirt driveway. I snuck up around the house and was spellbound by the views! The rest is history, as they say!!!
I have already mentioned many of the things that attract/ed me to this home and location. The troubles of the world seem far away when I am here. I do have wifi, and I can take my work with me when I stay there. I oftentimes get more work done in this setting than when I'm interrupted in the office all day! :-)
There is absolutely no noise (highway or otherwise). I have awakened in the middle of the night and seen the moon out over the water. I can lie in bed and hear the waves lapping the shore and the wind in the pine trees. What can I say? It's my 'bliss'....
I just realized I hadn't sent you a thank you note for the great time we spent at Mission View cottage the last week of June.
We arrived to a spotlessly clean house. Whoever cleans your place does a great job. We left them a tip and our thanks for doing such good work.
The bay's waters were way up again this year, lapping at the foot of the steps. Which meant no chairs on the sand - unless you wanted to sun while wading. No beach at all, except for those shores with 20-30' of area. Was told this was the highest the bay's waters have been since 1987. No big deal as the two deck levels worked great for sunning and reading.
Everything in the house worked well, including the Wi-Fi.
All restaurants in Elk Rapids were wonderful, although Lulu's in Bellaire has closed. I had a brush with celebrity as rocker, Bob Seger, sat at the Town Club bar enjoying a beer and sharing stories. Bob has a place on Elk Lake and is considered a "local" by residents. Nice guy, too.
The Elk Rapids Bakery continues to serve up the best donuts and cookies in America - but you have to get there by 7am Tues-Sat if you want any selection. A big local favorite.
Thank you again for allowing to stay at Mission View. We would like to come back up in late September. I'll contact you if it appears we can both get the time off to zap up for a long weekend.
I know we've been more relaxed and happier since spending the week at Mission View!
My family used to rent from you awhile back when my daughter was a baby!! She is turning 16 now!!! I thought it would be nice to see if you would rent your place July 5-12. We love our family vacations with my side of the family! Since my dad passed 6 years ago, we have tried to keep our family vacations going in his memory! Please let me know!! Thank you, Betsy Ramseyer Stropki
I would like to get in touch with you regarding a rental of your property in June, if you have a way to respond to my review posting, I would love to chat with you and try to make arrangements. Thank you! - Danielle
