Rio Marina offers the widest selection of beaches on the Island of Elba. The eastern side of the island is the heart of minerals and the ancient mining area, the beaches here mostly consist of a characteristic fine bright sand, while the southern coast, with its stunning cliffs along the sea and beautiful bays, often is accessible only by sea, and is considered 'the most' wild region of the island.
Rio Marina, is a small town with a history linked to the mining district that surrounds it. This area is characterized by the reddish color tinting the mountains caused by natural erosion of soil from the hills. Rio Marina was born in 1882. To visit in the historic center is a must. The 'Oratory of San Rocco, built in the sixteenth century. by the Prince of Piombino, is easily accessible and overlooks the public gardens. Another must see is the octagonal tower overlooking the harbor, built at the behest of the Appiani in early 1500. This small town located in the north-east coast of the island of Elba has always been famous for its strategic position. It is the natural outlet to the sea of the nearby mines. Its history is linked to that of the mining district and consists of several open pit mines (Vigneria, Rialbano, Valle Giove), located just a few kilometers away from the village. The last mine was closed in 1981, but the mining of the past has left traces all over. In order to preserve this great mineralogical museum in the open air a Mining Park has been set up which can be visited via a guided tour. Also to visit: "The ELBA MUSEUM OF MINERALS" with the collection of Gennai Tonietti, set up by the miners in the town hall of Rio Marina, as well as where to find historical documents relating to the mines themselves, you can find beautiful specimens of minerals from all over the Island of Elba some of great beauty and rarity.
